In a small village near the Forest of Giant Trees, hidden by the shadows of the trees round it, Moiraine was born and raised by an aging farmer couple. There she grew up and succeeded the farm when her parents died. The cause of their death was their old age, having been unable to hide when a few titans walked by the village. It was law in the village that one must not run to help those already seen by the titans for they may see a glimpse of the village. Houses in the village were scattered to avoid being seen by the titans and they had no schools; she tried to learn on her own, picking up notes and books from the bodies of those who tried to enter the forest. Everyone knew everyone and everyone wanted to survive.
A day before her eighteenth birthday, a group of people in gear from the cities tried to enter the forest. Three titans found them and killed them but a person escaped and found her farm. The villagers tried to push him away but Moiraine decided to help him, seeing his state similar to her parents. The man's bleeding led the titan to the village leading to the village's demise. After her survival, to which she did not know how, she decided to live behind the walls of the cities and join the army. When she was asked of her name upon entering the walls, she replied Moiraine Shadows, reminiscent of the village from which she was born.
