Seems like a good gift, especially if you know her wardrobe and if that hat will fit with her clothing.
Just the other day my mother and I went to Fred Meyer, my current place of work, and there's a shitload of clearance. We found a hat there that was $2 that is great for her. She wears it half the time she's out now. It's a short-billed tan/brown plaid cap that's got a slightly punk feel to it with the small skull pins along the side of it.
Your mom is cool. My mom is very classic-styled. She would never indulge in skulls or punk.
