User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.A vermillion unicorn entered Latte's shop, looking about curiously. It didn't have the same atmosphere to it that Candy Dandy's shop had. He liked it. At the same time, however, the young foal wasn't certain what, exactly, was sold here. Going up to the counter, he raised a brow at the menu. It almost seemed to be in a foreign language. "What is this stuff...?" he questioned, mostly to himself. The place appeared to sell beverages of some kind, but hot or cold, bitter or sweet, he couldn't tell. Regardless, it certainly seemed a place for more mature phonies.

Latte wished her current customer a wonderful day and then turned to the little foal that had entered her shop. No offense came at his question, because what phony had such a passion for coffee and tea as she did? Besides, she knew that her menu board was a bit overwhelming for first-time customers and preferred to take a little time with each of them.

"Coffee, tea, whatever you like!" Latte chimed, motioning to the board, "We have hot, cold, sweet, strong, creamy, chocolatey, herbal. We have some pastries as well, if that isn't your thing." Considering that she had not been a babby so long ago herself, she figured that it still wasn't nice to be condescended for one's age. The young ones were not to be ignored for their lack of brewed knowledge! After all, babbies became customers before too long!

"I see," he stated, returning his attention to the board as she gestured to it. "That's quite a wide variety. And this is your shop?" Making a slight face at the mention of pastries, he shook his head.

"What would you recommend that's hot but not sweet?" he wanted to know, doubtfully browsing the ingredients that were visible behind the counter.

A foal who didn't like pastries? How odd and refreshing! Latte turned to look over the board and then turned back to the colt. Coffee was nice and hot and strong, but not meant for babbies in the caffeinated variety.

"Well, you can try some coffee, if you'd like? You don't have to put sugar in it. Tea is always nice too, and that comes in a lot of flavors for all different reasons. What's your favorite snack?" Tea could be fruity, after all, or have similar flavor profiles to enjoyed foods.

The unicorn tilted his head perplexedly at the toffee-colored mare. "Do phonies usually put sugar in it?" he asked her, wondering if it was one of those things that just didn't taste right without all its usual ingredients. From what he'd heard of the stuff, though, it was supposedly like pizza where different phonies had different preferences regarding what ingredients to add.

"I...may I try some plain coffee?" Tea also sounded interesting, but if you had to pick a flavor, he thought he'd rather go with the coffee. There were enough choices as it was and he was having a hard time imagining all their resulting tastes. "Snack?" he repeated, surprised by her question. He hadn't really thought about it and snacking wasn't usually a priority for him. "...Popcorn, I suppose? How come?"

"Well, some phonies do," Latte nodded, "The people who do think it's gross without, and the people who drink it 'black', without sugar or cream, sometimes tease them, but there's nothing wrong with either, of course!"

She walked to one of her machines then and ejected a little taster of decaf. She didn't imagine that this foal's parents would appreciate it if she gave him a buzz. No phony wanted to have to deal with that.

"Here you go. Plain coffee with no caffeine, because that can be bad for younger phonies. There's lots of flavors, like nuts or vanilla, but unfortunately the most popcorn-y thing we have is toffee."

"Hmm." Pondering what Latte had said, he watched her as she filled a small cup and returned to offer it to him.

"Bad? How so?" he asked, feeling somewhat indignant. She would offer him sugar, but not caffeine? That made no sense to Truths. "It's alright; I didn't honestly expect to find popcorn here." He took a sip of the beverage. "...huh. This is...good." He blinked and looked up at her. "What about you? How do you have it?"

"They say it can stunt growth, and I can't say it's true for certain, but I'm sure you'd like to grow big and strong, right?" Latte asked, undisturbed, and gave a delighted grin at the babby's reaction. Ah, a young coffee aficionado.

"Oh, I take it lots of ways. It all depends on my mood, what flavor I pick and what I put it in. Usually I prefer it black or with a little cream, but I'm not crazy about sugar. The phony nodded, wondering for the first time where this foal's parents were.

"Mm, yes...big and strong," Truths repeated absently. "Ah...so the cream isn't sweet like whipped cream, then...?" he asked, suddenly getting an idea. "Would you mind if I...tried a little?"

If she turned her back for just a moment...perhaps he could test a little of that caffeinated coffee. If this was how good decaf was, what would the normal sort be like...?

"Sure!" Latte nodded, "There's some right over there on the table, if you don't quite know how much you'd like. It is sort of sweet, though."

Foiled! Of course, Latte had no actual expectations of the foal's plans and thus no idea that she'd foiled them. Had he asked, she may even offer the babby a little taste, but no way was he getting a cup without assaulting one of the one-cup brewers!

Surprised and annoyed by his lack of success, the foal was on the verge of considering doing just that and assulting one of the brewers. However, he managed to take a deep breath to calm his inner temper before heading over to where the cream was. Now that he saw it up close, he wasn't so keen on trying it after all.

Truths considered making a mess in order to distract the brewers and shop staff with the clean-up, but eventually he decided against it. There was no guarantee that they would leave their posts and it seemed an awful lot of trouble to go through just to try some caffeine. Furthermore, making a mess might get him kicked out, and then where would he be?

"Toffee is sweet too, isn't it?" he asked Latte with something of a sour face. "What else do you have in the way of food?"

Latte watched the peculiar foal go and tilted her head. Boy, he sure was a strange one, wasn't he? Oh well! Perhaps his personality had something to do with his calling in life, and it certainly wasn't her place to call someone odd.

"Hmm, yes, I'd say it is," she nodded then in response to being acknowledged again, "We do have biscotti, and some less sweet varieties. But here, let me get you some real coffee for that." Her passion for flavors had won out over her desire to not make this babby's parents angry, and after all it was early enough that he shouldn't have bed time any time soon, right? She made a cappuccino for the foal and served it on the counter with a couple pieces of biscotti.

"You just dip it in the coffee to make it softer. That's what it's made for! If it's too strong, don't feel bad telling me. I can add more milk! Some adult phonies can't even handle cappuccinos."

Logic stated that she should make him pay for this cup. First-time customers got their drinks free, but this was technically the second she had given to this one. ... ah, well, if he asked it was all well. If not, he was only a babby and he would most likely come in with his parents in the future.

"What are biscotti?" the curious colt asked, suddenly growing excited at the prospect of 'real' coffee. "Wait, you mean the sort with caffeine?" he asked, wondering what on earth had made the mare change her mind as he eagerly followed after her to watch. "Can biscotti only be had with...'real' coffee?"

Obeying the pale mare's instructions and dipping the biscotti in the dark liquid, Truths took a bite. His eyes widened. "This is wonderful!" he cried, finishing the treat. He was eating the second piece soon after, savoring the coffee with it. "Thank you, um..." he paused to swallow another mouthful of coffee. "Miss..." Shoot, he'd never gotten her name, had he?

"They a twice-baked Italian cookie," Latte nodded, smiling, "There's better coffees for it, and regular coffees for it. Just make sure you tell your parents you got the 'decaf'!"

At the foal's reaction, she couldn't help but turn and peer at his flank. Nope, no mark... hey, it was worth a check! He certainly adored that coffee and biscotti, didn't he? Maybe she had a new regular! Either way, she really liked the serious little guy.

"I'm glad you like it so much! my name is Latte, by the way. Just latte. What can I call you?"

"Better coffees? How are they better? And by how much?" Truths demanded, growing more eager by the minute. At her mention of parents, however, his brow furrowed in confusion. "Parents?" he asked. "What parents?"

He seemed so absorbed in thoughts of different types of coffee that he didn't notice Latte glance at his flank. This was probably just as well, since it probably would have raised some indignant questions from the foal. As it was, though, Truth felt giddier and more satisfied with life than he had in a while.

"Yes, thank you, Latte," he finished, casting her a rare smile. "My name is Hard Truths. I appreciate your hospitality. Don't worry; I'll repay you in whatever way I can. Just let me know." Maybe he could help her with her shop. Or pick up trash around Phonyland for a little allowance, maybe, so he could pay her back. Truths stared at the bottom of his drained mug as he thought about it. "I don't like having debts."
