I haven't known anyone to get involved in long term relationships, if they didn't involve some level on intelligence.

Its not weird, everyone just has their own preference on what they consider as the most important thing they want in a mate.
Personally, I don't care about looks, everyone is going to eventually grow old and wrinkly anyways. To me it is more important to find someone with a personality that you can connect with and makes you happy. So if intelligence is something that you need in order to have a satisfying relationship, go for it, what other people think doesn't matter because everyone is different anyways. (:
