Another August, another dying summer, another blank slate...Ruthie clicked through the names on Berate My Professor, searching for reviews of her Russian Lit professor. Allegedly he was "decent", which meant multiple-choice exams instead of essays (how she loathed multiple choice! She feared subjective answers and twisted questions--with essays she could reason with her reader). She glanced around the Espresso Yourself's photo-covered for a clock. Did she look forward to seeing James again? Of course. She felt like hadn't seen him in foreverrr, and she looked forward to teasing him.

Oh James~ did you get a professor you want? she smirked and sipped her chai latte. I mean, a professor you want~

She almost choked on her tea. Ugh, it wasn't even her best material, and she couldn't tease poor James like that, could she? Oh but I must! she thought. He would be such fun to tease! Lightly, though, so she wouldn't scare him away. Maybe a brush of the arm too, so he'd know she meant everything in good fun...

James was running late because he had been caught up in writing his lesson plans for the English classes he would be helping teach at Meadowview when school began. It showed in the way he skidded through the door, bag hastily slung over his shoulder and stuffed with folders and papers. He was panting and his hair was sticking to his face from sweat, clearly he rushed over when he realized how late he was running.

"Ruthie!" He exclaimed when he found her. He hurried over, plopping his bag on the seat with a big grin on his face. "Sorry about getting here late, working on stuff in preparation for the new semester," he apologized, gesturing to the bag. "Gimme a sec to grab a drink and we can start catching up?" He didn't wait for an answer though before he disappeared to the barista counter.

A quick coffee order and drink making later he was scurrying back over to the table his classmate resided at. He set his drink on the table, pulled out a chair and sat himself down. "So, Ruthie. It's been ages. What have you been up to?"

He hadn't seen her since summer break started. It was his own fault really, having spent several months as a recluse and even before then he'd be sparse. He was finally recovering from the missing civilian space fiasco two years prior. He hadn't mentioned it to her, nor had would he.

"James!" said Ruthie, lighting up as he entered the cafe. She couldn't help but smile as when she noticed how tired he looked--he must have stressed about arriving on time. How flattering that someone as kind as James stressed over her. She didn't realize how much she missed him. "It has been forever." She laughed. "Mostly I putzed around. Did some reading, tried to write, but nothing." She drank. "I figure when I'm back in a competitive environment--or at least find something to motivate me--I'll get back into the swing."

"But enough about me." She smiled. "How are you, my dear? Any adventures? Any groundbreaking revelations?"

She missed hanging out with James. When he greeted her, it felt like being welcomed home. She hoped they would chat more this year. They could even be writing buddies!

Where have you been this entire summer? she thought.

"Girlfriends?" she brought her drink to her lips to hide her grin.

"Writers block blows," he commented with a sigh. He'd been dealing with his own for close to two years. It was hard to write when you were convinced that nobody would believe what you wanted to write and you were convinced that the backlash would be life threatening. "Haven't written anything creative in ages. Mostly just lesson plans," he admitted.

He laughed at the enthusiasm she showed when asking about his life. "Nah, nothing exciting. Not recently." He shrugged. "Been a bit of a shut in." James kept to himself most of the time. "But I did recently pick photography again. Did a photoshoot for the humane society. Might have some photography work with them and their wildlife department."

He shook his head when she mentioned 'girlfriend'. "Hard to have a significant other when you don't really go out."

"Jamesyyyyy, we need to find you a girlfrannnn." She smirked and set down her drink. He was so cute in his shy, relaxed little way! "We must go out this year! Last year, we worked far too hard and didn't have time for anything, but now we can party and relax and eat pizza late into the night without worrying about crazy reading assignments from Marsupials in Australian Myth."

"And photos, you say! Glad to hear you're getting back into it. Will you take photos of me?!" She gave a GIANT smile. "I'll be the best model ever! You can even observe me in my natural habitat: Nestled between pages of criticism on Western lit and half-complete essays due the next morning."

"Pleeeease?"

She teased, but she kind of meant it. She loved exploiting her friends for their talents--especially if they were good.

James offered Ruthie a forced smile at her insistence on him needing a girl in his life. "I dunno Ruthie," he shook his head, playing with the cup in his hands. "I don't really want a girlfriend. I've got too much going on, I mean I should be starting grad school soon and get my teaching degree," he explained. "Plus I've got a lot to reflect on. I've lost track of how much has happened in the last two years.

I don't think I want the stress of a relationship, too complicated with everything going on right now. The city is in chaos and I haven't got the slightest idea who is even dateable." He began to feel as though he was rambling.

When photography became the focus of their conversation, he was thankful. "Sure, I could do that." He offered a more genuine smile this time. "Be good for my portfolio."

Poor James! Subject to Ruthie's torment. When would it end? Maybe she could set him up with her girl Trinity. She noted the too-wide smile, the head shake, his dismissal of the propsition, but she didn't really care! She wanted so badly to be the reason for his eternal happiness with her closest shopping buddy and fashionista! She would cross lines--every line!

Unless, of course, he does that bad thing.

That bad thing being direct criticism, which would bring her to tears. Could she blame him if he did that? No. Would it crazy-super-mega hurt and probably cause her to feel insecure around him?

...Yes.

Not worth it. She sighed and dropped the subject. "Very well...BUT my stance is known!"

His response to her offer, however, cheered her up.

"You'll see James! I'll be the best model ever. Way better than the wildlife!"

He shrugged, "If it happens, then it happens Ruthie." He was in no rush to get involved with someone. Besides, he was picky and it required meeting and interacting with new people which wouldn't be bad but he didn't have time for it. "I'm not going to rush into anything for the sake of being in a relationship."

James could be a fairly rational person, in the right circumstances.

He laughed at her as her enthusiasm was overwhelming, nearly embarrassing. "Okay, okay. Don't tell Yahya," he told her finishing off his latte. He had said the name reflexively. He knew she likely wouldn't know the boy. He was more of a hermit than James had been! "He's, uh, the guy I was working with at the humane society," he added quickly. "Wildlife are his thing I guess." He shrugged glancing over to the coffee bar.

"I think I want another drink. Want one?" Quick! Topic diversion!

"Oh James, you know I tease!" She didn't want to push him away--how reserved he seemed, but his laugh made her smile. "I wouldn't set you up unless you wanted it."

"And this Yahya sounds quite interesting. Good coworker? Bad coworker? Best friends?"

Oh no! He asked her if she wanted another drink--a courteous escape, but an escape nonetheless. Ohh, she felt guilty for pushing him, but she grinned and said, "I would love one! Thank you! Could I have a chai latte?"

James, James, James...He seemed so reserved!

"He's mostly just an acquaintance," James said quickly. Oh, he really shouldn't have brought the dude up in conversation. "He's the guy I worked with when doing the charity shoots for the adoption page. I told him I'd come back and do a shoot with the wildlife sometime." He shrugged because really, it wasn't a big deal. "He get's really caught up in his work so we haven't talked recently."

He pushed his chair in and took a few steps away. "Do you want it hot again?" He asked tilting his head slightly. He only waited a second for her answer before he was skittering off to the counter. He ordered quickly, glad to have escaped the conversation for a moment.

It wasn't that he didn't like Ruthie, because they were friends, but sometimes her prying could be tiring. He returned with their drinks and settled into his seat. "So Ruthie, do you have a love interest I need to know about?"

"Hmm." Ruthie noticed his hasty dismissal and narrowed her eyes in mock suspicion. "Well, I'm glad to hear you've made some friends. Hopefully they appreciate your work! And yes, hot please."

James vanished in a flashy flash! All of the sudden, he stood far away at the counter. Ruthie turned to her laptop and opened a browser. She searched, "How to Tease Politely" and opened the first result.

The best teasers understand their victims' emotions...

James returned to her seat and she slammed the laptop shut. She smiled and took her drink.

"UMM." She glanced at the photos across the wall. "I...No..." She laughed. "It's been a long summer, but hopefully it'll be easier to find someone once campus fills again."

Now it was James' turn to reveal in Ruthie's embarrassment. "Oh come on Ruthie! No boy's caught your eye?" He laughed, teasing her playfully. "It's okay, we can be awkwardly single together. I hear we have more fun," he paused, winking at her. "Single people that is. No obligations, no ties just whatever we want."

Being single was exhausting though, but he figured being in a relationship was just as exhausting just a little less lonely.

"I figure the right person will come along sometime," he shrugged sipping from his straw. "Why waste your time chasing people you're only half-interested in?" He didn't see much adventure in that.

Ruthie laughed. She didn't think James would tease--what a pleasant surprise! She brushed a strand of hair behind her hair. No ties...That wasn't exactly what she wanted, but she didn't feel grounded enough for a boyfriend. Maybe in a few months? She could probably line someone up by October, before Halloween and the winter holidays, but would it mean anything? She wasn't sure

"I'm sure being single is great fun. It will only get easier the more we do it." She smiled. A comforting lie... "But I don't know. I've had fun dating. It's nice to see what's out there, you know? It just takes courage."

She didn't know if he would understand how she loved to chase and be chased, and how dating taught her most of her social conduct.

"Of course, there's no right way. Certainly, it's a lot easier to cut straight to the chase and find true love and have happily ever after. It just seems so rare..."

"You can date and not commit," he retorted swirling his drink with his straw. "You shouldn't have to worry about courage Ruthie," James assured her, baffled by the idea that she needed to try and catch someone's eye. "You're gorgeous and if anyone tells you otherwise, well they're a filthy liar." He liked to compliment people and he'd be damned if he let anyone wallow in self-pity because someone with low self-esteem lashed out at them.

James knew how to flirt too, but it didn't mean he was good at it.

"Life's an adventure and you should live it to the fullest." He'd begun to babble. "If you don't take advantage of it now, you won't have the chance later. If you see an opportunity worth taking then you take it. Don't wait." He'd slammed his hands on the table at this point. "Don't wait Ruthie."

"Thank you, James." Aww! He cared! How sweet. She glanced away. "You're very kind to me. I'm glad you're around to pick me up."

Why couldn't she look James in the eye? James: The quiet kid from half her classes whom she teased about flirting and studying and spare time. Maybe the truth of his statements (however much he believed them babbling) made her feel weak and inexperienced.

Noo, she thought. Now I must look him in the eye for I have something to prove. She couldn't run away from a conversation, no matter how intimidating, so she smiled and held his gaze.

When green meets gold...

...Nature's first green is gold,
her hardest hue to hold...

"So what do you propose?" She sipped her tea. "How can I take advantage of it, my dear photographer? Date, of course, but where? Whom?"
