The unicorn's life had been a very set routine for the first few years that he had graced the valley - he had been there to attend to his great-nephew and to ensure his continued health. Over the course of those years, Azzinoth had excelled in this role and his great-nephew had long since taken over the major aspects of his own recovery. However his great-nephew had not been the only thing that had kept his mind occupied, over the course of his sleep walking he had stumbled accidentally upon a series of mares and eventually... well eventually one of them had 'stuck'. She was a peculiar sort, then again he was equally peculiar by definition, but she had found him intriguing and he hadn't understood why.

Had it not been due to the assistance of her bat he would have never understood either. Language barriers were funny that way, she hadn't spoken Kawani properly and neither had he. In fact, it appeared that both of them had been working towards understanding the language of the valley and more often than not, they were inclined to become lost in translation. Fortunately they had both improved, slowly but surely they gained an understanding of the local language and could use it for the most part but then there were other problems.

...The accents.

Her's didn't necessarily make sense to him and his didn't always make sense to her, truthfully he expected his was worse given that culturally speaking his homeland had never had a use for the letter 'r' or 'v'. On occasions he had suspicions that he was pronouncing things wrong, in fact he was sure of it. Consequently, once he had settled into the valley he now called home, he had made the decision to pursue another hobby, both out of interest and because it seemed right. Thus the stallion had approached Nephthys loyal and ever present companion to request his aid... He had asked that he be taught Neph's native language.

At first this had gone poorly and he hadn't been able to grasp the complexities of the grammar or the pronunciation, it had been a testament to the bat's patience that he had persevered. Alas, Azzinoth was tenacious to say the least and once the unicorn had set his sight on the prize he had worked hard and pushed himself (and the bat) relentlessly until he had achieved success. Thus, the black stallion might not be fluent but he could converse well enough...

Nevertheless, until he had been certain that he could converse comfortably he had kept it a secret. It had only been on the assurances of his very patient 'teacher' that he had decided that today was the day... it was time to surprise the rather enchanting mare who deemed him to be some sort of moon spirit.

The Kawani was still not at all like her desert home, but Nephthys had found a small spot near the foothills which she now called home. It was a nice little spot near the edge of the woods; she had shelter an a place to retreat if she felt too exposed to the plains, but with flatter lands spread out before her so she might watch larger herds or rogue soquili pass through the plains. Everything was so vibrant, so colorful; even in the winter months, the white, greys, browns, and blues were far more colourful than the brown sands of dust and rock. Sometimes she missed the desert, sometimes her heart clenched, but there were great mountains that separated her from her home. . . and she feared the monsters in the desert even more. The ones that had taken her family, her people, away from her; that night was one she would never forget, no matter how time tried to tend to the wound. The pain and fear wasn't nearly as present as it had been during her escape; she did feel relatively safe in the embrace of the lands. Her bat, Izvark, made good company and good conversation, when he wasn't gushing over some stallion he saw while huning bugs; better still, the Moon Spirit (one whom she had finally come to know as Azzinoth) sometimes crossed her path. Their conversations were not always spectacular; neither of them were good at Kawani, and their accents were quite thick. Still, perhaps they didn't need words, and she found herself grateful for the time the unicorn -- that was what he had been called by Izvark -- could spare.

Nephthys was not a complicated mare. She did not require a lot of maintenance, nor did she like complicated matters, or dramatics. She was content in the company of few, and more of an observer. Sometimes she saw Wind Spirits flying overhead, or even Elemental Spirits with manes of fire or ice. Never, in all her years, had she ever known a world quite so magical like the Kawani. Izvark laughed at her naivety, but it could not be helped; until she'd come half-froze into the Kawani, she had never known herself to be of anything but a horse. A large, intelligent horse, but a horse all the same. Now she was known as a . . . soquili.

Whatever Izvark said, Nephthys still believed what she saw; why couldn't a unicorn be a moon spirit? Why couldn't those that flew on the winds be a wind spirit? Perhaps it was only that they did not know; perhaps, she knew, she was simply refusing to give up what she had been taught to believe. She had nothing else of her homelands, at least she'd keep the stories, the legends, even if it made her look the fool.

Given Nephthys was not a suspicious mare, at least when it came to those she trusted, she had no idea of her moon spirits plan. That Izvark did what he wished was just as well for the mare; she lived her life quietly, humbly, and it was from the sidelines she was happy to stay. Let the fire-headed bat find his fun -- given how crude the creature could be, she didn't want to know what he was doing with his free time!

So, this day was no different. Nephthys was grazing on the sweet grasses near the woods; she was lost in thought, but kept her ears pricked. She wanted to know if danger arose; she wanted to now if there were monsters to fear, or if she might need to step further into the woods.

He wasn't generally one to give in to fear, but the scenario he was walking in to was perhaps one of the most daunting he had faced. One might say it was one of those moments when, despite being trivial to others, it stirred a deep rooted fear or concern in the individual involved. For all the stallion knew, his nerves would get the better of him and he would forget every word he had been taught by the flamboyant bat. He would revert to his quiet self, and Izvark would have to act as a bridge between the pair of soquili again - to put things in simple terms, even Azzinoth's sense of pride was at stake. He didn't want to mess this up, particularly when he knew he could speak reasonably well when he wasn't under pressure!

It wasn't long before Azzinoth stepped foot into the territory that Nephthys had chosen for her home. A much flatter and sheltered land, it was much more easy to traverse than his typical haunts and had a more temperate climate. It certainly made for a refreshing change and while the mountain soquili may not agree with him, he rather preferred it down here than up there. The land just wasn't as harsh here and it was much easier to find meditative spots. Preferences were preferences though, and he didn't expect everyone to agree with his take on life.

So as not to startle the mare, the unicorn made certain to step more heavily than normal, and as he drew ever nearer where she tended to rest he did clear his throat. He was never one to sneak up on another, if he approached in the middle of an argument between two soquili he still had the decency to clear his throat in order to announce himself (though they may opt to continue bickering anyway). Startling others had never done him any favours and it most certainly didn't work when it came to some of his patience, thus, it was simpler to treat everyone the same.

"Nephthys? Hello?" he hazarded at last, his Kawani still rough around the edges. Admittedly the word itself wasn't a difficult one to understand anyway, but he had said other simple sentences before and been squinted at by the company he had been in...
