Trevor awoke to the sensation of a wet nose on his face. He blinked and looked down to see his rat Santiago sitting on his chest and cleaning his whiskers. "What are you doing up here? I thought I left you in your cage." Trevor said with a frown.
He picked up the colorful rat and put it back in it's cage and looked around the dorm room. He nearly had a heart attack when he saw that no one else was in the room. "Crap!" He cried and dashed about getting dressed in record time and pulling his pick through his unmanagable hair. "I overlsept!" He cried in annoyance.
It sucked that he had slept today of all days, when his first class was Potions and his Head of House was teaching. Bloody hell! He'd surely get demerits or worse detention for arriving late! At least the classroom was close by. The only unfortunate thing was that he'd miss breakfast. He wondered if he would survive until lunch.
When he was finally presentable enough, Trevor dashed out of the Slytherin dorms and up to the Potions classroom. He slipped in and was relieved when no one noticed his late arrival. He took a spot near a blond haired slytherin and leaned in to whisper to him. "Did the professor say what we're doing yet?"

Woo....breakfast had been good. It really was nice how respectful they'd been of his request for vegetarian dishes, he hated the thought of eating animals....plus all the hormones and products in animals.....ech, he'd never felt healthier than when he cut them out! Plus he never had any argument with veggies, anything cooked well was tasty.
As Potions started he pulled up a stool to his table and pulled out his text book. Forgetfulness Potions...seemed interesting, albeit he couldn't see many positive uses to make someone forget something. Maybe trauma someone couldn't live with? Or to keep an important secret? Hm, he didn't know if he could justify it as well as something like a cure. With a cure he never had to question the motive, it was fairly cut and paste what the intention was.
"Did the professor say what we're doing yet?"
Ashe tilted his head to eye the other, unable to keep from gawking slightly at the scars. He always hated seeing someone looking so hurt...he had to feel at least a little bad for them. He pulled himself out of his own thoughts though and tugged his eyes from the scar. "Uh, yea. Forgetfulness Potion.....but," he paused, a playful smile dancing about his lips, "I doubt you'll be needing that terribly, huh?" he said, offering his most polite laugh. A ninja he was not, the teacher may've missed it while he faced the blackboard to write down instructions, but Ashe hadn't.
"You'll be partnering with the person you're sharing a table with."
Rats.....hopefully this kid was better than his tardiness would suggest, Ashe needed top marks and he would settle for nothing less.

Trevor could feel his stomach starting to rumble..great. He was going to be at the mercy of an angry stomach for the rest of the morning. It was too bad that food wasn't allowed in the class. That was a rule he wasn't about to break though. He knew that it would just cause problems.
He was surprised when the other kid gawked at him and frowned touching his hair. Did his hair look worse than he had thought? He tried to smooth his hair out, and then sighed and with a light frown and asked.
"Is something wrong with my hair? I had to brush it out rather quickly. I don't normally oversleep," he replied a bit indignantly. He about groaned when the teacher announced that they would be paired up with the other person at their table. Of all the luck. The day was just going to get worse and worse.
"Well..let's have a look at the ingredients then." He intoned in a neutral tone. He flipped through his potions' book to the Forgetfullness Potion and ran a finger down the list of items.
"Lethe River water, Valerian sprigs and Mistletoe berries. Want me to go gather those?" He asked.

He laughed quietly under his breath at the other's concern for his hair. Of the two of them Ashe looked more the type to be so vain about appearances, and yet half the time if he was in a rush he would just finger comb as he ran. If he was tardy his hair wasn't high on his list of concerns.....but then....he was sort of the diligent type, he wasn't too sure if his new partner was the same....but he didn't appear to be. Ashe was a little worried for the sake of their potion. Albeit, if he dragged them down Ashe would simply take over and that would solve that little problem.
"Sure, and standard ingredient," he agreed. He though a moment before adding, "I'll get things set up here then." He pulled out his cauldron and laid out his tools in front of him, pulling his mortar and pestle close. Might as well get started on crushing the mistletoe berries and the mix of standard ingredient while the potion brewed, ahh the beauty of multi-tasking. "Oh, by the way, I'm Ashe. Nice to meet you," he said, using a more pleasant tone than his prior attempted joking tone. It didn't seem like his partner thought him too funny any way, or maybe he was just overly sensitive.

Despite the other's low laugh at his question, Trevor heard him quite well. He couldn't help but frown slightly at it. "It's not like I'm into my appearance needing to be perfect or anything, if I don't brush my hair well enough it looks like I have a huge shrub on my head." He explained.
Trevor nodded and hurried over to the supply closet and grabbed the items reaching around several shorter first years making them a bit miffed at him. He merely grinned at them and hustled back to his table. He saw that the other kid had gotten things set up while he was away.
He was a bit surprised to realize he hadn't actually introduced himself. He nodded at the other boy. "I'm Trevor. So then..you want to work on grinding up the mistletoe berries while I start the first step?" He asked in an amicable manner.
He really didn't want to get off to a bad start with Ashe, after all his comments weren't all that bad. Just a little to close for comfort. "Nice to meet you too." He added as he started to warm the cauldron up slowly and dropped in the drops of the Lethe river water."

Hm.....his hair never did anything interesting....though that could be how against products his mother was, she never let him use anything not safe for plants and animals, it just became habit after a certain point. No mousse, no special products.....his mother even had a friend into soaping who tended to make any hygiene products they needed. It was a fair amount cost efficient too....not that his mother really worried terribly about that.
"So, how are you with potions?" he asked thoughtfully, taking the mistletoe berries and putting them into his mortar to begin grinding them up. Might as well make small talk while they were working. "Can't say I know all too much about them myself, I'm pretty new to all this," he said, smiling fondly. Although he knew little about the wizarding world he was enjoying everything he'd learned about it thus far, to be truthful he was looking forward to seeing even more, such as quidditch. Many of the others in the house had been talking about it and making it sound rather exciting.

Trevor looked over the instructions for the potion and turned down the cauldron's heat so it wouldn't boil the water too fast. It was supposed to be a gently slow boil, at the other's question he looked up. "Umm..I guess I'm okay. I just realized I had the cauldron up too high so I turned it down. It hadn't started boiling yet so I think we'll be okay." He added.
Trevor hadn't had the chance to practice potions before coming to school so he wasn't any more knowledgeable than Ashe was. "I don't know much more than you." He admitted. "Though I've known about magic most of my life my parents didn't really want to teach me things I'd do when they weren't around. And..well I am something of a daredevil."

Ashe eyed him worriedly. Was it really okay leaving him to play with the fire? He was a little worried just how well their potion would turn out if he was already having issues with just bringing the water to a boil. Well if anything went wrong he would simply kick him off potion duty and make him sit in a corner until Ashe finished it himself. It didn't seem very nice, but he wanted good grades. "Okay...." he said, tone hinting at how nervous he felt as he ground up the berries.
"I guess we're on even grounds in that respect....I mean, neither of us have any experience with anything." Albeit, maybe his knack for cooking could be helpful with potions? He was decent at following a recipe, but he tended to improvise with his home cooking. He'd have to think of it more like the chemical compositions with baking. He wasn't as good with cookies and cakes so tended to follow the recipes far closer. "I can't really imagine there's much around the school to be too daring with," he said, trying to make a perfect powder with the berries.

Trevor could tell that he was making Ashe uncomfortable. He couldn't help but roll his eyes slightly. What had made this kid such a worry wort? Seriously..he needed to lighten up a bit..and live a little. He was definitely going to have to drag him off for some late night adventure one night soon.
"Chill," Trevor intoned and glanced over the boiling potion before reaching for the valerian sprigs and dropping them inside. Then he picked up the metal spoon and stirred the mixture clockwise three times. "All we have to do is follow the instructions and we'll be fine." he picked up his wand and waved it over the pot as the instructions specified and then put it back into his cloak's pocket.
"Now then, we get to wait for a bit, since it's got to brew for 45 to 60 minutes. Is there anything you want to do while we wait?" He asked cocking an eyebrow up at the other boy.
Trevor rather doubted that the other would come up with anything fun worth while to do so he didn't really get his hopes up too high.

It would've been a lot easier to settle down if he hadn't seen older Slytherins that had told him how badly they'd been injured during Potions. He'd even seen one still healing from an injury....honestly it was very worrying, and the fact that Trevor had adopted a 'devil-may-care' attitude towards potions it was all the more disconcerting. Ashe didn't like the idea of his potion boiling over, or the potion simply going awry when they get to test it, or what if it was like soap and could volcano? His mother's friend that made soap had some seriously scary burns and that was from muggle 'potions'.
Ashe pulled an egg timer out of his bag and wound it. It was a muggle item, yes, but unlike technology something so simple still ran. He set it on the table with the minutes set to 45. "Well.....I guess I have some cards in my bag? I mean, they're just muggle cards so they're not too exciting, but I know a lot of games." He shrugged a little. "Mindja....games are more fun when you can move around," he mused, "unless you have something better or wanna work on your homework." If he wanted to do homework that was honestly okay with Ashe, he didn't mind getting his work done early....albeit....he did like games, even just card games.

Trevor was not the type to get fazed or worried about what happened to other people in classes. Cause he wasn't them. Dangerous things never really bothered him, probably cause he had laughed in the face of danger so many times. Like when he had climbed up the astronomy tower without a rope or anything to catch him if he had fallen. It was just the person he was.
Still..he couldn't help but feel sorry for Ashe's worrying ways. He'd never really know what it was like to have a day free of fear. He watched as Ashe pulled out a small item out of his bag and winded it. What the heck was that? Was it ticking? Oh..it was some sort of old muggle timer, he figured out. It would have been embarrassing to ask about it. Ashe probably would have shot him that look again.
Trevor was surprised by the other's offer of a card game. He had heard of them..though he had never seen them. "Sure, let's play a game. You'll have to teach me though. I've never really played a card game without talking cards. Sometimes if you get the right subjects they tell you how to cheat on games." Trevor said with a slight smile. He sat down on his stool so he could keep an eye on the potion and cleared up the area in front of the cauldron.
"Who would want to work on homework when one can learn a new game?" he asked with a scoff. "Surely not me."

Ashe still seemed to notice the look at the timer and he flushed slightly. "Uhh.....it's an old timer, I know," he admitted, assuming the odd look was because of that, "it still works just fine." Crap.....wizards probably had a cooler way of keeping an eye on time. He should've just let Trevor time it. He didn't put it back in his bag, however, the egg timer was old and rather mundane (And so cutely egg-shaped) but it still worked just fine.
He goggled at the idea of talking cards, slightly balked. Wizards had cards that could do that? But....didn't that take the point out of being good at a game if your cards could cheat you a win? Bizarre.....and yet, interesting. He wanted to see a magical deck.....of course, he wouldn't bother cheating. He liked just being better by being clever, it was more interesting that way.
Ashe arced the cards into a bridge and shuffled, deciding to explain as he did, "Okay, the game is called Rummy," he began, tossing ten cards to each of their hands, "what you want to do is lay your hand on the table in runs of the same suit, or in sets of three or more. A run can be anything so long as it's in the same suit, and a set just needs the same number." He picked up his hand and flipped the top card onto a discard pile. "At the start of your turn you can either draw from here," he tapped the deck, "or the discard pile," again a tap to the appropriate card.
Ah Rummy.....his uncle was always quite the card shark and on the weekends Ashe had spent with him he picked up quite a few games. Hm....maybe if Trevor liked cards games Ashe could teach him a full casino set of games....heh. Albeit, they'd probably wind up betting with those weird-flavored jelly beans or something.
After he finished explaining the rules he motioned to the deck, "So, I dealt so you go first."

Trevor coughed and glanced away to the floor, and nodded. He hadn't meant to make Ashe embarrassed. It just seemed odd to him that a kid his age would be carrying around an old timer. It made him wonder what Ashe normally used it for. "As long as it works it's fine." he said with a shrug of his shoulders. "I just haven't seen a timer like that before. I've only ever seen those hourglass timers."
Trevor was amused to see how surprised and shocked Ashe was at the thought of talking cards. Obviously this kid hadn't grown up in a magicking family or area. And he more than likely had never gotten any of those collectors cards from the chocolate frogs before either. He had a lot to expose this kid to, if he was given a chance to.
He rolled up his sleeves and watched as the other expertly shuffled the cards, wondering what Ashe would think of a deck of cards that could shuffle itself. He listened closely as Ashe explained the game they'd be playing and looked through his cards. Wow..he had a great hand. He had three Aces, two fours, two sevens and a king and a queen. "Sounds easy enough," He said with a smile.
He reached out and took the top card out of the deck, getting another seven. With a smile he placed the seven in with the other two and discarded a king. "So we only get ten cards in our hands at a time then?"
