Life Hunter
BATTLE ARENA

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

General Information
The portal opens up into an observation room, and down the stairs, an odd chamber for something like hunter training. At the center of a piranha-filled pool stands a solid stone table and several chairs. The Life Arena was built underneath the demolitions and ballistics testing areas, and the chamber rumbles with the occasional explosions above. Pinpoint red lasers sweep across the room regularly, as if hidden snipers are searching for a nice target. In the center of the table sits a wooden tower, made up of smaller wooden blocks. Yes. That's right. The Life Hunters prefer to train via Jenga.

Note: Distraction techniques and Yo Momma jokes are considered viable weapons when playing competitively.

If you fail: you have knocked down the tower! A small dart hits the back of your neck. You come to several hours later, and hope Dr. H didn't do anything to your body while you were unconscious. When you look into the mirror...

If you win: you have reached 50 points! You get a sharpie marker to do with as you please. peen points go to those with the highest scores.

    Mechanics
    - by carefully removing pieces of the tower, you earn points and advance to the next round. As the rounds continue, the odds grow steadily against you. Rolling a 1 at any point means you have knocked down the tower. Please do enjoy your mystery dart. Anything after reaching 50 points is purely for peen.

    - you may roll pieces individually (suggested for group play) or in batches of 5 (basically, a full round.)

Proposed setup just so I could get the thread going, but if you wanna start it some other way holla and I'll rewrite.

Sleep had actually worked, for once. He'd gotten a whole three hours, which was nearly unprecedented in recent memory.

So he was up before most people, then, in the thickest dark. A run around the outside of the dorm building, an exhausted walk back wondering if he'd ever been in shape. Shower, shave, smoke. Breakfast--can of peaches, whatever, good enough--smoke again because now he had an extra carton. It was still early, even after all that, and he ambled around the dorm building with his hands in his pockets trying not to think.

Now what.

His first thought was the computer labs, another day with DIANA; tracking down Gale's leads, making himself, as he kept saying, useful. Scrounging around the library under the guise of research. Ambling down to the minipets labs, which he'd thus far managed to avoid.

But after his success with the Death training course he was feeling remarkably competent, and this was not a thing he was accustomed to. He was feeling cocky. Time for another course. It would be educational.

He owed Peyton for waking him up during one of his precious snatched hours of sleep, and although he wouldn't have admitted it to himself for anything, he was clinging to Peyton for dear life because she was the only thing that even approached familiarity, and he needed company more than he wanted to acknowledge. Give him time and people like Gale and Molly would join that mental list.

And what course? He thought about it.

Life division. That was all smarts, yeah? He thought about Peyton, and he thought about himself, and decided that if there was ever a place he could prove himself her superior, it'd be there.

Poor ignorant b*****d. This is why you do your research, Taym. You're in the intelligence division.

He drew up in front of her door, and knocked. Loudly.

Unfortunately for Taym, Peyton had been up for the better part of half an hour. Three times a week she got up early to jog, and today was one of those days. Of course being up didn't mean she was dressed, nor did it mean she'd eaten yet, but she was, at least, awake, so it only took about a minute for the door to open just enough for a small tanned face to peer through.

Her first reaction was surprise, first at the fact anyone was up and wanted her attention, and secondly that is was Taym. Usually it was her that went to pester him, not vice versa. She blinked up at him, surprise written all over her face, before brows narrowed in concern. As much as she was aware of the bags under his eyes, she did not know what his sleep schedule was like because he was a filthy liar and she tended to believe it when he said he'd gotten good sleep, or eaten, or was fine.

"Morning," she chanced, opening the door a little wider so she could lean on the frame. This early she was still engulfed in the over-sized t-shirt she'd worn to bed and not much else. There were actually shorts under there somewhere, but the long hem hid them from view. when not covered in adorable socks apparently her toenails were painted a bright aqua. "To what do I owe this surprise visit?" What happened now was left unspoken, but it was there in her face.

Dammit. All fresh-faced. Oh well, it was worth a shot.

"Retaliatory," he explained roughly. "Training, and misery loves company. Put clothes on," he added, turning his face away in disgust.

He was fine.

She glowered after him ad he turned away, resisting the childish temptation to stich her tongue out or flip him off. It wouldn't do any good. Instead she turned back to her room to do as he commanded. She was already dressed, but not really for wandering around outside the dorms.

She settled on a dark t-shirt with a rib cage printed on it, a military cap, and some black knee highs with 'bad a**' printed on the backs.

"So what kind of training are we doing?" She was going to assume it wasn't a spar.

Taym lived in his new coat, and apparently had exactly two shirts, both of them with that thin, faded, stain-speckled softness of a shirt that had been worn very thoroughly for a very long time. She had now seen them both. He'd rotated back to the first. The screenprint on it was peeling up in several places, but at least it was clean now.

He eyed her socks and snorted, but had no commentary, setting off down the hall with the expectation that she'd follow. No time to brush teeth, no time to shower. Straight to business. Retaliatory, indeed.

"Life course," he said bluntly. "I'm trying to get a look at all of them for--"

He realized Peyton didn't actually know about DIANA. For some reason he could not understand, he did not want to tell her about it.

"--research," he finished. "I finished the Death course the other night like I mentioned on Twitter, and I've had a go at your division's." Better not to describe how that went. "I know where it's at but I've got no idea what goes on there."

Peyton's socks were accurate. You're just jealous, Taym.

"I haven't tried any of the training courses yet." She'd heard of them, vaguely. Not what was to be expected from each, but that they existed. Taking a crack at them had been on her to-do list for a while, but she just hadn't made it to any of them yet. So this worked.

Pale eyes did narrow when there was the slightest pause before he finished with 'research'. "Oh huh. Something about psychopaths." She just nodded when he mentioned the Sun run, then shrugged. "I haven't looked into them much, so I' guess we'll be surprised together."

He walked in silence for a while before he felt the need to air a thought, irritable and bitchy and rough: "I'm trying to stay busy," he said, defensively, as though he needed to justify himself. And maybe that was why he didn't want to talk about DIANA.

Any other place he'd ever been he'd followed a predictable trajectory: a fiery work-your-fingers-to-the-bone ethic that persisted for about three weeks while he told himself he could just chip and hold down a normal life, and then the siren call of his various vices, and a backwards tumbling back into missed days and angry phone calls and pink slips and long languorous hours that turned into days, devoid of anything but lying around with his brain turned off. Then stage three, which didn't bear thinking about.

He was in stage one, and the realization that there would be no stage two was frightening. What would he do when he realized no one gave a s**t about him proving himself? Not for the first time since arriving he thought wistfully about what he'd do if he had--

"I just... need to stay busy." He walked hunched, with his hands in his pockets. He always walked like he was walking into a strong wind.

Sidelong glances flicked his way periodically as they walked, but like before, she didn't feel a need to fill a silence that wasn't strained. As obnoxious as she could potentially be, she wasn't a chatter box. In fact she'd stayed very quiet the last few years. Since she'd been at Deus it was the most she'd talked in probably years.

She did blink at him when he offered that little bit of defensive information, and she twitched a brow at him but didn't respond. Not entirely sure what she'd said to warrant that sort of a response. When it came again though, accompanied by hunched shoulders, she felt like maybe she should say something.

"Nothing wrong with staying busy," she offered, lips curling at the corners in a soft smile. "And it's all training so we're better prepared down the line." He didn't need to justify his desire to get better, or be better, to Peyton. She understood it. It was why she visited the training fields every day, why she got up early to jog three times a week, and why she never turned down a challenge.

He made a noise that was neither assent nor disagreement, and kept his silence while they traversed the grounds to the ballistics testing area. Apparently this was a 24-hour job. There were ominous rumblings.

He led her down below, past the bored-looking Life tech, through the doors, and into the room.

"They certainly have a flare for the theatrical, don't th--" he started drily, taking in the red lasers and the piranhas and the general Bond-villain atmosphere of the place. The words died on his lips when he realized what he was looking at in the middle.

"Son of a b***h," he hissed, raking his hands through his hair. As if on cue, a tremor shuddered through them.

All of this was new, so Peyton was trying to soak in as much as she could while he lead her to the courses and down into what really did look like a set for some Bond movie's master villain hang out. "Yeah they do." She was watching the piranhas when he stopped, and almost walked right into him before putting a hand up to catch herself on his back. "What?"

Stepping around him quickly she stared towards the middle and the little wooden blocks that formed a tower on a small table. "No s**t," she murmured, cracking a smile. "Is that what I think it is?" It looked an awful lot like Jenga.

She strode forward to get a better look, then sat down with a grin, gesturing to the seat across from her. She saw those hand tremors, bro.

He stood there hovering over the table, staring at the tower morosely, and he announced to the room in general: "There's more to research than steady hands, you know."

Son of a b***h.

He sat down like a man getting strapped into an electric chair, and stretched out his hands to stare at them, willing them not to shake. They weren't. They hadn't done it much at all, since coming to the Island. It was an odd thing.

"This is unfair," he informed her. "You go ******** first."

Peyton just sat there, chin resting on her laced fingers, grinning benignly up at Taym as he made his complaints and sat down.

Without so much as a word she reached out and slide a little block free, setting it down in front of her on one narrow end, then gestured at the little tower. "All you, buddy."

It was honestly maybe a little bit wrenching to watch Taym, now acutely self-conscious, rest his hands flat on the table for a long few seconds, staring at them like he was willing them to cooperate.

Even more wrenching, the way he gingerly lifted his fingers and treated them like they were some antagonistic alien being than part of his own body, and the visible relief when they didn't betray him and he gently replaced the block on top of the tower.

"They're expecting you to lose," he said conversationally. He pointed at his own forehead. "You've got a dot."

So did he.

Glancing up from the tower, she noticed he too had a little dot, and she pointed a finger towards it. "Or they're just preparing for when one of us ******** this up."

There were still lots of options to pick from, so she picked a middle brick from the bottom and rather casually poked it through before snagging it and placing it on top with the rest.

Successfully having completed her turn, she went back to eyeing the little red dot hovering around Taym's neck region. "What do you think happens if we knock the tower down?"
