Molly, bless her heart, was actually really excited to meet a new trainee. There was something nice about meeting new people, especially when they seemed really nice before she actually met them in person! True to her word, Molly had a tray of a dozen cupcakes for Taym…and not just of one flavor, either. She’d been really indecisive, so she ended up making a whole bunch of flavors with different frosting combinations.

Seemed like a good idea!

Once the cupcakes were ready, the Mist trainee had sent off a message to the new trainee, and arranged a good time and a good place to meet him. It had settled on outside the dormitories, and thus that was where Molly would be, looking hopefully at every Hunter that passed by with a tray of cupcakes in her hands.

It also had just hit her now that she had no idea what Taym looked like, because he hadn’t put a profile picture on his Twitter yet.

…Oh dear.

No worries, though: Molly had a picture. She also had, maybe more tellingly, a tray of cupcakes. A whole damn tray. The sight incurred a twinge of guilt. They weren't all for him, surely.

Of course, he wasn't sure exactly what had possessed him to ask for one, anyway. A sweet tooth a mile wide helped--despite what Peyton had seen he could, in fact, put away enormous quantities of food if it was sugar-coated enough--and so had, if he had been in the mood to be honest with himself, the fact that everyone had seemed to like this Molly Finn person. He felt a distinct urge to find himself in the sphere of a kindly person.

He had no idea what Molly was expecting, but he was aware, as he approached, that it probably wasn't him. If anyone ever needed to eat a dozen cupcakes it was this guy, and he needed to follow it up with a shave. A cigarette dangled off his lip--priority number one had been obtaining those--and with his hands in his pockets, coat pushed back, the sharp lines of his emaciated torso were the more obvious under his bleach-speckled shirt.

He had a rangy, loping way of walking, all slouched and hyperaware, and he stopped some feet shy of her. He looked like the sort of creature that ought to bark, so it was, maybe, a little surprising how softspoken he was: "Molly Finn, I presume?"

One hunter after another went by, and since they didn’t seem to be looking for someone, Molly felt safe to assume that they weren’t the person she was looking…er….waiting for.

Curls bounced as Molly’s head turned this way and that, and the curls finally stopped bouncing when one Hunter in particular definitely seemed to be coming her way. Molly’s lips perked up in anticipation, and the closer Taym got, the wider Molly’s smile became. Molly, once again blessing her heart, was not a judgmental soul, nor did she have it in her to make any assumptions about someone based on their appearance. She was rather delighted as well, when this young man spoke to her.

“Oh, I’m so happy to see you!” She couldn’t help but immediately gush after he spoke to her. “It’s kind of nerve wracking, looking for someone you’ve never seen before!” Her smile might as well have split her face now, and she nodded her head vigorously. “That I am, Mr. Thompson! It’s so nice to meet you!” Molly took a few steps closer to the young man, and then held out the tray of cupcakes to him.

“These are for you!” Yes. The entire tray. “I wasn’t sure what flavor you might like, so I just made a whole bunch and put them together for you! I hope that’s alright?”

Well, that was enthusiastic. After the greetings he'd gotten from Rep and Peyton, he'd take it, even if it made him faintly embarrassed, incredibly self-conscious, and a bit tongue-tied.

"Oh god, sweetheart," he said, and he called her that the way dirty old men called their waitresses that, with an unaware condescension that would probably be lost on her of all people. One could only hope. "Is it all right?"

He took a quick drag and flicked the cherry away so that he could take the tray without shedding ash all over them, trying to juggle it into his hands, which trembled faintly, just on the edge of being noticeable. "I was right. You're a saint. And don't call me Mr. Thompson, please. Obadiah's fine. Or whatever, since I seem to be acquiring nicknames at a rapid clip. I feel like you've put in too much effort for me," he added, surveying the cupcakes and wondering how the hell he was going to eat them all. Maybe Peyton would want one, or five. A stroke of genius: "You'll share them with me, right?"

Completely and utterly lost on Molly. She was still smiling away, and her smile had turned fox eyed because she was rather happy right now. After the tray was taken out of her hands, she waved her freckled fingers a bit. “Oh, no, no, I’m not a saint! You’re too kind! I just really like baking and helping! Alright!” She chirped. “Obadiah!” She echoed. “Oh…I’m not the best at making nick names!” She giggled softly. “But if you have something else you’d rather be known by, then please just let me know!”

At his offer, Molly blinked before she clasped her hands together. “Oh, that’s really nice of you! I’ll just have one, but no more! I have a dozen dozen more sitting on the kitchen counter ready to go out! I snack a lot on cupcakes that don’t turn out so well, either…” Here Molly looked oddly guilty as she admitted this. For shame she snack on failure cupcakes. For shame.

Regardless, she immediately perked back up again. “Ah, also! Is there anything I can help you with? Anything at all? I’ve been awake at Deus for nearly two years, so if there’s anything you need, I think I can get it!”

Something about that startled him.

"Two years," he echoed weakly, sounding shaken. "That's... that's a long time." He rallied, or tried to, juggling the tray over into one hand so that he could exhale a cloud of smoke, having just enough decency to turn his head away from her but not enough to apologize or even notice when it drifted back in her direction anyway. "I'm sure you... have a lot you could teach me. Like where I could find a decent broom in this shi--" he bit it back. For reasons he could not fathom, he did not want to curse in front of Molly. It would be like cursing in front of his mother. "You know, one with the bristles not falling out."

“Is it?” Molly tapped a finger against her cheek thoughtfully. “It doesn’t really feel like a long time…plus I have friends who have been awake for longer! Some have a whole other year on me.” Admittedly, when the cloud of smoke came back, Molly’s smile became strained before the smell dissipated. Once again, Molly wouldn’t judge, but deep down she couldn’t help but wish that anyone who smoked would quit…only because it was bad for their health! What anyone did though, was their business…and Molly would never say a word against it.

The Mist trainee didn’t seem to notice, or care, how he caught himself from swearing, and her smile perked back up. “Oh yes! Since you’re new, you haven’t been off the Island yet, I imagine?” Molly clapped her hands together gently. “Since I moved in with Miss Candace, I have a good spare broom and mop if you’d like to have them? I don’t need them anymore, so if they’d be put to better use, I’d like that!”

A whole year. Three years. He felt the blood running out of his face, but the rest of it brought him back to reality. "Are you sure about turning down that canonization?" he asked with a wolfish (if somewhat nervous) grin. "I can solemnly swear they'd be given a good home and fully appreciated. If you're not busy I can go get them now?" Please. Please now. "I guess I can--can drop these off first."

This was good. Molly was good. He was more relaxed than he had been at all so far, and if she'd been able to see him before maybe she'd have noticed the way the hard line of his jaw and the tension of his shoulders had unraveled. A cheery maternal presence was almost (although not quite) as good as a cigarette.

Molly tilted her head to one side, her brows pinching together worriedly. “Um…are you feeling alright? You’re um…pale…” Though the correct term seemed to be paler, but she wasn’t going to say that out loud. His somewhat wolfish but nervous grin helped to assure her a bit though, and Molly flushed lightly before she laughed. “Oh, I’m very sure about turning it down…Oh yes! Yes, we can go get them now! I’m not busy at all.” She beamed at the young man once more, and then made a ‘come with me’ wave of her hand, as she went back inside the dorms.

The freckled woman climbed the stairs to the second floor, and then stopped at 215. Unlocking the door, she opened it, and then invited Taym inside. “We won’t be here, long, but please, come in! I live here with Miss Candace. She’s a full Mist Hunter, and she’s the best!” Molly gushed, and then moved into the apartment to go to one of the closets.

Should her guest look around, he’d find room 215 to be clean, comfortable, homey, and chic. It was draped in a lot of purple. The kitchen, on the other hand, while cozy and sanitary…was littered with cupcakes right now. Which shouldn’t be a surprise.

This, too: this made him uncomfortable. It looked very... domestic. It looked long-term. The tiny, spartan dorms were like the boxes before a dogtrack: a temporary holding cell at best, a place to pace nervously before you were turned out after the rabbits.

Still clutching the tray of sweets like it was an anchor in a stormy sea, he only gave himself a second to look around, with quick and nervous eyes that seemed to move constantly, rarely settling.

"What happened that you had to get a roommate?" he asked warily, adding as an aside: "God, you've been busy." Which made him feel better about his loot.

Luckily Molly wasn’t gone too long, and she returned with a pail full of cleaning supplies, a broom, and a mop.

“What happened?” She echoed. “…Oh! Oh, see, the second floor is for full Hunters, while trainees and intermediates are on the first floor…and Divison leads and assistants are on the third floor.” She beamed. “This is Miss Candace’s apartment, and she was super nice and invited me to live with her, since the apartment is so big!” She shook the pail she held a bit. “Lead the way, good sir!”

"That's a sight for sore fuc--for sore eyes," he said with sincere relief when she returned with the broom.

He led the way, obediently, although he clearly found the process of talking over his shoulder at her awkward. Too many questions. "Must be nice to get out of the sh--out of the dorms, I guess?" He wondered absently what she'd done to earn it, but couldn't bring himself to be nosy enough to ask. "Kitchen and everything. Does it have its own shower?"

If there was a private bathroom he was going to start working towards a second-floor apartment right now.

Molly just smiled, and she locked up the apartment before she followed after Taym.

At his first questioned, she hummed thoughtfully. “I liked everywhere I’ve been!” She answered truthfully. “Yes, the rooms downstairs are smaller, and the bathrooms are communal…but there’s something cozier about a small space too…ah…that’s just me though!” Molly nodded her head, though he might not see it. “Oh, yes! The apartments on the second floor have their own bathrooms! A lot of Hunters take time and customize their apartments to the way they want as well!”

Well, that clenched it. He loped down the stairs like a coyote and visions of a private shower danced in his head. Right now having access to hot water on the regular was still enough of a novelty that it outweighed the pain of communal showers, but he was aware that the novelty would wear off, and he dreaded it.

They were nearly at his door before he realized he ought to say something instead of stewing in silence: "Where do I get a friend like Miss Candace until I can climb the ranks?" he asked, and although he'd meant for it to be good-natured it just came out sarcastic, like nearly everything he said. "Awfully generous of her. I guess like attracts like."

He opened the door with his elbow, and felt the contrast between the apartment upstairs and his own room now: spartan and even somewhat grim, but impeccably clean. The place smelled like bleach. He'd sat up for hours scouring every surface. The meager collection of books he owned was aligned with absolute precision in a stack beside the perfectly-made bed. He deposited the cupcakes on his desk. "First pick is yours, of course," he said, gesturing at them and absently clawing off his scarf the second his hands were empty.

Molly followed, a bounce in her step that caused the cleaning supplies to bounce as well. “You go forth and socialize and make friends!” Molly announced cheerfully. “That’s how I met Miss Candace.” She nodded her head again. “Oh yes, I know I’m very lucky and fortunate to have a good friend like her to let me live with her…there’s quite a few other trainees and intermediates who room with Hunters upstairs as well!”

As they reached his room, Molly immediately stopped in the door way, and peered at the room curiously. Actually, seeing another trainee’s room, Taym’s did look kind of…sad…especially compared to Jeremy’s, who had a kiddie pool filled with rubber duckies in it. The bleach smell made her nose wrinkle briefly, but hopefully that’d fade out soon for a nicer smell. “Ah…is it alright if I come in?” Molly asked, ever the polite one.
