XXXXXXX[Paramekia]

Did she think she could hide?

Paramekia had always been one to delay the inevitable and to test his children - as with Raniero he had watched and waited as he had become a man, and more vitally, had stood against his father. He had always been the sort to wait in the hopes that each one of his line would work out their own troubles and concerns and that they would grow to be much stronger as a result. For the most part this had happened, with two of his grandchildren displaying the appropriate affinity towards good judgement and intelligence...but there had been one who had not.

Or rather she had, but she was the epitome of her father and had taken some of his traits to the extreme. Unwilling to 'accept' her, Paramekia had challenged her to prove her worth to him and in doing so, she had inadvertently been killed. It had been a tragic accident as it were, one in which the family had mourned for deeply. Blame had been placed on Paramekia and he had grieved also for her loss, though he had the strength to ignore the blame placed on him by his son.

He had become estranged from them, but he had always kept tabs on them.

He knew where they were.

...So you could imagine his surprise when word of mouth reached him that his dead grandchild was in fact, very much alive. He had extracted the necessary details, including her role in the care of three skinwalker bastards, and now that he was aware of where she was, he did not delay in making himself known. Suffice it to say that the mare had a great deal to answer for and he would be sure to put her in her place.

XXXXXXX[Equinox]

Equinox had lived in relative isolation for these last few years within the Vitterfolk lands. Due to the hospitality and guidance of Malis, Nox had found sanctuary in these lands when she had needed it most. In her very darkest hour the trolls had been there for her and had protected her, even to the extent as to take in the three skinwalker children she had adopted. They had held no judgement and didn't regard her with pity or disgust, they simply embraced her as one of her own.

As time had gone on, they had loved her and she had been welcomed into a family quite unlike her own. This wasn't to say that Raniero and Marut hadn't loved their daughter, but the pressures didn't exist here that she had been subjected to there. The suffocating inspection and constant observations of her grandfather had placed a heavy burden on her shoulders...and when she had met that challenge she had nearly died.

It had been for that reason that she had chosen to hide in the depths of the forest and feign her death. If she had returned she knew her grandfather would have announced that she had brought shame upon the family. He would have chastised her and the cycle would have begun again. Some might have called her a coward but she knew she didn't want to be subjected to the scrutiny again...and she didn't want her parents subjected to it either.

Thus she had settled into a quiet life with the Vitterfolk and had thrown herself into raising her three children, each of which exhibited some signs of their skinwalker heritage but were otherwise stable creatures. When they had flown the nest to pursue their own goals, some to pursue their father and others to hunt their mother, she had been left to her own devices... And so she had remained in her new home, settling for gardens and decorations rather than the adventurous life others sought.

His sources had been correct in her location and it wasn't long before he had located the Vitterfolk lands and her home. Surrounded by trinkets and cultivated flowers, it stood out amidst the remaining, chaotic undergrowth and shrubbery. If he were to be perfectly honest the transformation was really quite impressive, gracing the the area with a delicate and almost magical quality that he hadn't seen for many years. His lips pursed as he observed it, the mare not immediately visible in his line of sight as he admired what she had created in her absence.

...It would have taken more than just a few years to create this, she had been here for a very long time, and yet it had taken him so very long to track her down and finally speak to her.

"The epitome of cowardice, is to declare oneself dead," Paramekia spoke at last, finally glimpsing his grand daughter as he bridged the gap, his pace slow and measured. "To allow your family the pain and grief that comes at a result of such news," he continued and pursed his lips.

"Yet here I stand, in the presence of a ghost..."

So the secret was out and someone had either blown her cover or spotted her in passing. Penance had long since given his word that he wouldn't reveal her location and she knew he was the sort to keep such an oath.. So she could only surmise that it had been another. It gave her cause to grimace, her lower jaw tightening as she kept her back to her grandfather. She hadn't practised for a day when she would be discovered, having assumed that once dead, they would leave her be. Regardless, she should have known better for her grandfather had always been a tenacious sort and it was with a heavy sigh that she finally turned to face him.

What greeted her was not the cool demeanour she had anticipated, there wasn't even the slightest of a glint in his eye. In fact, as he gazed at her, he seemed to be genuinely curious as to what her answer would be. It was quite unlike him and she was somewhat taken aback, he hadn't elected to lash out and even his statements had been tame.

"Pain and grief, that in the long term would avoid a critical eye from you for the failings of one of your blood," Nox corrected softly, releasing a small sigh as she walked towards him. "You made no secret of your disappointment, and you were never one to go easy on your own blood - if I had come back, what then?"

"I've found a life here, I have a family that cares for me and doesn't put that unnecessary pressure on me... And I have no doubt that my death caused you to ease up on my parents."

Straight to the point, the mare had grown a back bone apparently. He could do nothing more than nod, masking his approval at that development as best she could. She had met his scrutiny with that of her own and she raised valid points - her death had done exactly what she had anticipated and his scrutiny had lifted... then again he had also been estranged from them in the same fell swoop. For all intents and purposes, she had made her plan look less like cowardice and a lot more like honour.

...After all it had been what was required for Paramekia to re-evaluate his own methods. A little too late, but he had re-evaluated all the same.

"So you have," he agreed, glancing at the garden she had cultivated for a few moments. "And according to my sources you have children as well," he murmured, though he could see no sign of a mate nearby. Had they been a mistake, planned or otherwise? She hadn't seemed the sort to lie with a Skinwalker...although according to the source the children were very much like their mother.

"Adopted children," Nox corrected smoothly at Paramekia's conversational tone. Evidently he had come with something else in mind, but now that he had come face to face with her he appeared to be re-evaluating this. What was he after, or what was it that he had wanted her to say when it came to this whole sordid state of affairs? She wasn't sure but she was satisfied at the very least, that she had dispelled his notion that she was a loose mare, if that was what he had assumed.

"They were born from a Skinwalker and rather leave them to rot, I raised them myself," she pointed out, her lips pursing into a thin line as she challenged him to make a poor remark about that. She loved her children and through them she had found a new sense of strength. She would do anything for them, and much like her own father, she would just as easily cast out and silence her own blood if they spoke out against them.

...She could be ruthless too.

"But they have all found their own paths now, one seeks his father and the other seeks her mother. Both have become hunters in that respect."

XXXXXXX[Paramekia]

They hunted skinwalkers? He supposed that if both parents possessed such corrupted blood then the children would have an element of their strength, but the dangers that such an activity posed were fairly substantial. Had they decided this on their own, or had they been influenced to follow such goals? He could do nothing more than stare at Nox as he pondered over who or what may have possessed them to chase after the beasts... Based on Nox's own words it seemed unlikely she would push them to do anything or prove something.

So then what?

"And you let them pursue such a dangerous activity, despite the risks that it entails?" he said at last, fixing his gaze on his granddaughter as he attempted to work out what might have happened. A small part of him suspected that he was missing the bigger picture, and as he was unaware of the war surrounding the Vitterfolk and Solemn, he would most likely always be unaware.

"They made the decision to pursue them by themselves," she replied and shook her head, turning her attention to her flowers. With a small sigh she lifted a hoof and pushed some back into position, away from the grasping tendrils of the weeds nearby. "While the family has never been critical of their heritage, when their father in particular began to cause havoc, they took a stand," she explained, though she knew not of why she felt the need to explain anything to her grandfather.

"Aware that her mother could cause the same problems, Catalyst also set out to pursue her bloodline," she pursed her lips. It had been quite some time since she had heard from Lys, and it made her wonder if the mare was still safe. She hadn't heard any bad news, but she hadn't heard any good news either and that did concern her a touch. She knew the other two were safe as they remained close...but Lys had vanished.

...Much like Equinox had.

"I haven't heard from her since," she confessed and pulled a face. "I know that the other two are safe but unfortunately... I can't say the same for her," she frowned and turned her gaze back to her grandfather.

"How did you find me?" she said at last, realising that perhaps she could use the same method to uncover the whereabouts of her daughter.

XXXXXXX[Paramekia]

"The same way that I am going to find your daughter," he replied coolly, his eyes taking on that gleam that they had been missing. Whether Nox would understand it or not, what she had said had 'redeemed' her in many respects - her innate desire to protect her family and ensure they maintained their honour under his scrutiny - and now her own adopted children pursuing the same goals to ensure no one was hurt by their line. Adopted or not, they had become a part of his line and now that they had...

It was his duty to keep tabs on them.

It was also his duty to abuse his connections to ensure they remained safe and succeeded in their end goal. Though he had no doubt that the Vitterfolk had their own war well in hand, even he knew that Lys may be in an entirely different situation.

"When you have been around as long as I have, you have connections," he murmured and released a sigh. "But it will take a while to gather the necessary information to track her down, in the mean time, might I suggest that you let your parents know that you are not dead...?" His tone was light and quite unlike him.

Alas, before she could respond or disagree in any form, he had already swept away...
