Intro

It has been 5 years since the attack on earth by a mysterious alien entity caused the entire world's economy to collapse to a shadow of what it once was. The attack was so sudden and fierce that no one had the time to comprehend nor understand what had happened. Many view it as an act of god. Others believe that the world powers had finally reached their tipping point and pushed the launch button to end it all. In the end though, most of the civilized world has been pushed back nearly 100 years. Electricity is a rare commodity and working automobiles are scarce. Even clean running water is getting harder to find and filter for consumption.
However there are a few beacons of light in the darkness. A few cities in the world managed to pool enough resources to keep most of their infrastructure intact. Others were practically wiped out and back to the dark ages. In the United States alone, only 3 cities could be considered hospitable for modern civilization. These include New York, New Orleans and San Francisco.
Among the survivors walk a few individuals who are said to be gifted or "Touched" by an unknown power. Many displaying feats of supernatural ability. Some believe them to be the alien entity in human form. Others to be saviors. Still others the next evolution of human kind.
What role will you play in the future of mankind? Will you lead it to it's former glory? Let them bend to your very whim? Or do you seek to make fortune with your new powers? The choice is yours. All choices come with its consequences for good or ill.

Rules

Follow the Gaia TOS and the rules of The Roleplay Refuge.

[x] Keep everything PG 13.
[x] Always follow the Gaia TOS.
[x] Read the Story and the Important Information. Both are vital to understanding the setting and to your ability to roleplay convincingly within it.
[x] Respect everyone, and not just in this Roleplay, everyone. Do not flame, ever.
[x] No spamming outside of the nonsense section please.
[x] Act in character. Try not to metagame. It takes away the excitment.
[x] Respect your threadmasters! If you aren't going to roleplay after applying, please notify your threadmasters so they may prepare in consequence...
[x] Cursing is allowed, but don't go crazy with it.
[x] Romance is welcomed, but no farther than that within the RP.
[x] Please do your very best to stay literate. Unless your character has a strange accent of something. Misspelling words is understandable, but not all of the time.
[x] We all suffer from writers block at one point or another. Do not let this stop you though. If you must post a one sentence post then so be it. Just do not make a habit of it.
[x] Please at least check this thread every other day. We want active members here.
[x] Inform me/us when you will be gone please.
[x] Out of Character, OOC, will be posted like such: ((Out of Character post example)).
[x] If you leave the Roleplay I reserve the right to use/reuse your character within the Roleplay.
[x] I reserve the right to change these rules at any time.
[x] Balance between powers and skills is important. A hero who is all powerful and can do anything is boring. That is why teams are made. So each can complement where the others lack.

Important Info

New York: A city still on its last leg trying to stablize. Primarily ruled by martial law, the army keeps its citizens in check. Unruly behavior is met with punishment and possible banishment from the city. The city is surrounded by tall thick walls akin to that of a fortress. Every person has a job to do to ensure the survival of the city. Whether it is keeping order or working in the underground tunnels that lead outside the city. If found, the Touched are recruited into the military to serve. By force if necessary. Most citizens are unconcered with those on the outside and are convinced that New York is the only livable city left.

New Orleans: A city that should have collapsed after the initial chaos, but somehow managed to survive. This was largely in part due to the large concentration of Touched in the area. Coming to a agreement to coexist, the Touched use their powers to supply basic commodities to live such as clean water and safety. Due to their importance, the Touched are given greater privilages and with those come arrogance and pride. Though it doesn't apply to all the Touched, regulars can't help but feel to be under their mercy. Most are content with their simple life while others hope for greener pastures.

San Francisco: The only city to basically survive the onslaught and remain intact thanks to the quick minds of those in power and the cooperation of, whether intentionally or not, many of the touched. Because of this, San Francisco remains the becon of hope for many who wish to enter its walls. Beyond its boarders however lies only wasteland and likely death to those who would leave. A basic network of technology links the city and conmmunications stand. However it is impossible to reach beyond the wasteland due to high interferrence of unknown origin. The governement is run by a council of leaders to keep order. Touched coexist with normal humans but are watched carefully and are registered due to their ability to potentially harm the general population. They are however held with high regard and urged to use their abilites to help bring the country back from the dark.

Dates of importance:
December 12, 2012: The world is plunged into chaos and wars all over the world begin.
January 3, 2013: Nuclear release by the superpowers causing vast destruction and nearly wiping humanity from the face of the earth.
November 10, 2016: First documented sighting of the power of the Touched. Pictures of a caped individual were taken but were unclear due to the debris and lighting showing only a shadow of the individual. The person had been named the 'Savior' giving the question of powerful individuals living among the people.
More to come.

Character Profiles

PM all applications to kurisutan. Since this is a superhero roleplay you are free to use any existing superhero as a template. The templates will be borrowed from the Mutants and Masterminds role play.
Keep in mind that while you may feel free to create your character as an established adventurer they are not a superbeing. Your telepath will not be able to bend large populations to his/her will. Your powerhouse will not be able to lift 100+ tons while casually carrying a conversation and walking about as if it were nothing. And your gadgetteer is not batman where he has the right item for every single problem. Your characters may be skilled, but they are still mortals and should be treated as such.
If you are unsure of a power, feel free to ask. However we usually don't restrict the imagination especially creative ones.
While filling out your Character Profile if there are fields that do not apply to your character leave them blank or put N/A.
If you see that a particular power or skill is being used by more than one person, pick another power or skill that you think will benefit the team. Everyone will have a chance to shine.
The archetypes are meant as a guide and by no means a way to restric you. Rather to give you a general idea of the type of hero you wish to make. When in doubt use your favorite superhero as a template.
weaknesses and compolications are meant to humanize your hero. They are to add risk and excitement forcing the hero to make difficult choices.

Other:

Social Standing:

Occupation: Vigilante hero. Messenger/Delivery Person.

Personality: James is a loner and does not speak much with people he does not know. He has a small number of friends that he is close with, though he sometimes finds himself falling out of contact with them until they drag him out of his home and make him socialize again.

Likes: Reading, working out, listening to music. Spending time with his few friends.

Dislikes: James has little tolerance for stupidity and no sympathy for criminals. He also hates bugs and spiders.

Hobbies: Reading, training, playing games with friends.

Strengths: Fort is good at thinking on his feet. His spatial awareness is also excellent, the development of his ability seems to have advanced this.

Motivation: Fort does what he does out of a sense of grim justice. He has seen darkness in the world and has the ability to bring at least some of it to an end, and so he does. It could also be called a sense of duty to use his powers for what he sees as a greater good. Following the attack the world has fallen on hard times. People are rebuilding but things are still far from what they once were. James strives to help people when and where he can, in an effort to make their world better, and to help restore what they have lost.

History/Background: James grew up with a normal life. Mom, Dad, older brother, even a dog. They were fairly well off as far as money went. James and his older brother Thomas both participated in martial arts as children and continued with it into their young adulthood.
When he came of age Thomas joined the army. He was eventually shipped over seas and fought in several battles with enemy soldiers of the course of years. Finally, he came home. He had served his country well and now had earned his rest. Then he was killed in a mugging gone wrong. Everything he had done to help protect the people of his country and one of his own killed him for the spare cash in his wallet.
James fell into dark times following his brother's death. He felt a sense of vengeance burning in him. Anger, pain, and sadness.
It was shortly after this that the attack came. During his darkest moments James' life was plunged even further into darkness and chaos. He and his family have done what they can to maintain a reasonable way of life, and to help in the relief efforts to support those that have lost their own way of life due to the economic collapse following the attack. James moved back in with his family so that they could all be together in those rough times to support each other, both emotionally and financially. James took a job as a bike messenger and also volunteers in a nearby homeless shelter in his free time.
Some years later James started hearing about the rise of people with strange powers or abilities. At first he shrugged it off as a downtrodden remnant of a once great nation coming up with something to raise their spirits. And then his own power manifested. He started teleporting by accident. Fortunately it only happened when nobody else was around and he quickly started working to control this strange new ability. Soon he had a grasp on it and no longer needed to fear that he might use it by accident in front of other people. And then he thought to himself, "Now what?".
James decided that he needed to confide in someone and chose his best friend Hector. Hector was shocked, and then amazed. James asked Hector what he thought he should do now. And Hector said that people with superpowers always do one of two things. They either become a hero, or a villain. James decided to become the former. The two of them decided they needed more help and so agreed on another person to share the secret with. James' Sensei, his martial arts instructor. The three of them agreed that James' new power should be used to help people. James decided, though, that he did not want to shine a spotlight on himself or his family. So the three of them eventually agreed that taking the guise of a masked vigilante might be the best approach for him.
Sensei Miles was able to help procure some equipment that they modified and they were able to assemble a costume of sorts for James. James dubbed himself Fort, after Charles Fort who coined the term teleportation and now helps the people his own way as a masked vigilante.

Powers: Teleportation. Fort is able to instantly transport himself through space with a thought. He is also able to reorient himself in relation to objects around him. In order for him to teleport something with him he must be in physical contact with it. His natural instincts regarding his ability prevent him from accidentally transporting himself or anything he is in contact with when he teleports from reappearing in the same space as another object. He is also able of teleporting objects that he is in contact with without transporting himself with them.

Weaknesses/Complications: Fort is only capable of teleporting up to about 300 ft. at a time. He is incapable of carrying more than roughly 200 additional lbs while teleporting. His range when transmitting something without himself is much more limited, roughly 10% of his normal. Making rapid jumps can cause him to develop a headache that can progress into a migraine and then into debilitating pain and nose-bleeding.

Skills: Fort is a skilled bladesman.

Weapon of choice: Carries an assortment of bladed weaponry. A pair of longswords that he keeps on the harness on his back, the blades are dulled on one side of each so that he can use them as blunt instruments in order to avoid causing permanent damage to people. A variety of daggers are sheathed and strapped to his belts and on his thighs.

Occupation: "Big damn hero"
Personality: Usually quiet, but you if you really get him talking about something he doesn't shut up. He can be a
bit of a smart-a** so some people just think he's an a**, but usually he doesn't mean it. He finds a laugh in a lot of stuff people don't and he's always fascinated by new things. He really is a nice guy though and means well, just
doesn't always come off that way.
Likes: Reading, writing, helping people out when he can, comics, roleplaying games, etc.
Dislikes: Crowds, people he finds annoying.
Hobbies: Reading, writing, playing table-top rpgs, keeping himself fit.
Strengths: A decent fighter, but his creativity is his greatest asset.
Motivation: "With great power, comes great responsibility."
History/Background: Just like everyone his life started with being birthed into the world. Oddly enough it was during a total solar eclipse. There were complications as well and his mother didn't make it through. His father was a military man so they moved often while he grew up. When he was in third grade he was getting bullied a lot in school and his father taught him how to fight. So he practiced with his Dad between periods of video games after school. He developed a fascination with superhero's and worlds of fantasy, he found a group of kids with similar interests and was introduced to roleplaying games. As his tastes in 'fine literature'(As he would call it.) developed he began to want to be more like the heros themselves. Nothing crazy like actually fighting crime, but he wanted to help people. So he began volunteering, getting himself into shape so he could help more. He started
doing free running as a way to help keep himself in shape and have fun. Then he grduated and went off to college.

He was going to become an teacher. He hadn't even settled on a focus for his teaching career when the wars hit and everything was plunged into chaos. That marked the end of his education at Tulane. It also marked the first time his powers manifested. The city was in a midst of a riot and he was trying to get home so he could lock himself away from the madness, but there in the street was a little kid maybe four at the time. Crying and alone, he ran over to her, as soon as he picked her up an explosion rocked the bottom floor of an adjacent building and before it the old three story apartment building crumbled down atop them. He went to shield her with his body for all the good it would do and darkness surrounded them. Then all that could be heard was a great crash and silence. At the time it seemed the impossible happened, the rubble was all around them in a five foot diameter hemisphere. He knew something was holding it back, he could touch it, and he found he could see her even though he knew he shouldn't be able it. Three days went by like that before rescuers got there and after they climbed out and were walking away, that pocket collapsed. They had called him lucky. He knew he was, but he also knew there was more to him now and he explored it. His weapons were taken from thugs he had stopped, the coat too and he wore it to hide the shotgun he began to carry with him.
Powers: Darkness clings to him naturally granting him a kind of cloaking in dark environments, also part of the reason he doesn't really worry about a costume. Furthermore within 30 ft. he can manipulate darkness into tangible
objects, nothing more complex than a hinge though. The objects he creates cannot be animated. As an addition/side effect of his affinity with darkness he is able to see in it.
Weaknesses or complications: He can only work with what darkness is available, he can't just create it. Direct light whether from the sun or otherwise would 'dissolve' any constructs he makes not to mention accessible 'material'. So daytime gives him little to nil to work with, same goes for well lit areas. This is part of the reason he wears the mask, to protect his identity.
Skills : He's a decent brawler and a skilled free runner.
Weapon of choice: Aside from anything he might make out of darkness. He carries a sawed-off shotgun with a pistol handle and a S&W 9mm.

In a settlement 20 miles east of Miami Florida, the sun rose from the eastern sky casting its rays of light on the land. With the rising of the sun, the residents work from their beds and began a new day. On the south end of the settlement, a tall young man left his home to join in the gathering for another day of survival. It had been like this day in and day out for many moons that he had already lost count of how long he had been in the settlement. However he knew that the settlement needed every able body to pull its share to ensure the survival of the group.

Taking a deep breath he stretched his arms basking in the morning light. He could see that the people had already begun their daily activities; Cooking, checking the barriers, relieving the guards on shift. It was routine and each day was the same. Because of the geography, the soil was prime for cultivating crops. They had managed to find and fence some livestock. It seemed like a picture of the middle ages, but this was the modern world. Not too long ago they had working cell phones, supermarkets, cars and all the luxuries not yet discovered back then. Now because the world powers got trigger happy, they got set back in time in regards to innovations. It was a sad thought and many look back and regret not living it up more. Even Alexander never really got to fully use his education that he had worked so hard to earn and his family had paid for. It was all gone. Or at least a good portion of it now had no application. Still he was thankful to be alive. Thankful that his power had manifested when it did. Otherwise he would have been crushed dead when his apartment collapsed. Many others weren't so lucky. He decided that he had to make each day count since without the modern conveniences including modern medicine, life would be a lot harder and shorter if you didn't take care of yourself.

As he walked to the center of the settlement, he was greeted by his neighbors as usual. Greeting them in kind he began his usual chores.

James Williamson awoke to the rising sun. He had never been a morning person and so he made sure to leave the shades on his window drawn so that the sun would wake him. He rolled out of bed with a groan and began dressing for the day. A pair of worn and faded jeans, worn but durable boots, a thin grey t-shirt. With the collapse of the economy this was really the best he could do. He had a few changes of clothes, but not many.
James was currently a resident of New Orleans. Had been his whole life. And he didn't see that changing anytime soon. Especially since by all reports San Francisco, New York, and New Orleans were the only cities in what used to be The United States that were truly livable anymore. Everywhere else had fallen back to half dark ages half industrial revolution level.
James left his room and headed into the kitchen/living room area. His mother was cooking breakfast over the stove. A couple eggs and a buttered toast. God, how he missed bacon. But they were better off than most. They currently lived in a moderate sized apartment. Two bedrooms, a bathroom, a living room, and a small kitchen. It wasn't much, but they were fairly content with it. Especially after their home had burned down in the rioting that had followed the collapse.
James plopped himself down in a chair and quickly ate his breakfast. When he finished he set his plate in the sink and headed for the door.
"Thanks, mom. See you tonight." He called over his shoulder.
"I love you. Be careful out there." James' mother called after him.
"Always." He replied, and then shut the door behind him.
James went down the hall, then down the stairs, then hit the street and started making his way towards work. He worked as a messenger. He kept his bike at work, it was theirs anyways, since they had better security. James walked down the street a short ways and then turned into an alley. After walking down the alley a ways he turned into another alley. It was a dead end, and empty. James checked behind him to make sure he hadn't been followed. Then he teleported.
James reappeared atop the roof of one of the buildings that he had standing beside a moment before. He had barely even reappeared before he vanished again, reappearing two buildings over, still atop the roof. He made sure to stay low, so that those on the street or people looking out of their windows would not see him. He had taken this route so many times that he could have done it with his eyes closed. A series of further 'jumps' and he arrived in another alley down on street level again. He walked out onto the street, went down and around the corner and he was there. Gonzales Delivery.

((Sorry about putting my character so far away from yours, but I really wanted to place him in a city. Plus I don't know what percentage of the population are Touched, so I also thought it might be weird if there were more than one in such a small village. I imagine there could be a myriad of reasons why/how our characters could end up meeting up though.))

Alex had been given the task of finding more gas to power the electrical generators for the next few days. Most of the gas stations near the settlement had been depleted by those trying to escape the cities in the past and without refilling, they eventually ran dry. It was now his job to find any abandoned stations or tanks to find any remaining fuel the village could use.

The village usually sent 4 individuals. One in each cardinal direction to find fuel. Many found him a reliable individual since he would sometimes bring at least 2-3x more fuel than others. This was usually due to his ability to tilt most of the tankards to get what little fuel was left. However he was finding more difficult to find and the usual places were running dry.

One one of his usual runs, he was surveying an area for potential sources when he felt as if he was being watched. Looking around he saw that he was alone. Turning back to his work he felt a p***k on the back of his neck. Rubbing it he felt slightly light headed. Within minutes he could feel his legs grow weak eventually collapsing under him and falling unconscious.

Time passed and it was unclear how long he had been out. When he woke he saw he was inside a caged that was inside a holding area. There were a number of individuals caged and chained. Of the lot he was the only one who was conscious. At first he wanted to change and escape, but could not for some reason. Whatever he was hit with seemed to suppress his power somehow. His head was still spinning but he could hear words from the front of the cabin.

"We should probably hit the outer part of the city first. We can probably get more without being spotted. Meaning more potential cash with less risk." said one voice.

"Yes, I agree with you. Less work and more profit? I like your thinking." another said.

'Where are they taking me?' Alex thought. Where was he? As he peered out of one of the cracks and noticed that the land was no longer plains or marsh. Rather it looked more like swamp land. It seemed that while he was knocked out he had been transported from Florida to the outskirts of Louisiana. He could hear the grinding of the wheels indicating that he was being transported via train. No wonder they were able to move so quickly.

The train eventually came to a halt and the two individuals got up and opened the door to get out. Feigning sleep, he watched as they exited and closed the door once more. He had to get out of there. Freeing himself from his bonds he tried to rouse the others, but to no avail. They were in a deep sleep and would not awaken. Knowing that going through the door would alert anyone outside in case it was being guarded, he decided to escape through a weakened portion of the floor. Creating a hole large enough for him to pass through he slipped through and crawled below the cart. Waiting until the coast was clear, he sprinted into the woods. It was now getting dark and he was losing light fast. Unsure of where to go, he headed to where he could see the most light. He found a beaten path and a worn sign. "Welcome to New Orleans" it read. Hoping he could find help, he headed toward the city.

James had gone about his day as usual. He rode his bike from one end of town to the other and back again, delivering packages. Then he did it again. He occasionally cheated, using his ability to bypass sections of town that would have been difficult to navigate because of damages, traffic, or simply because there were not any usable side streets. In those cases he leapfrogged his way up to the tops of buildings and then skipping across the chasms between buildings. Sometimes he had to make a jump into thin air and then make a second, and sometimes even a third or more, rapid jump in order to reach his destination.
Despite his abuse of power to make his daily life a little more convenient things were uneventful as per usual. He finished his shift and then headed down to a local homeless shelter. He volunteered there often. It was run by one of the local churches, as most of these sorts of establishments seemed to be. James was not a member of their church, but they weren't too good to turn away help. James helped with cooking and serving the evening meal, which he would probably eat also, then make sure that there was a place for everyone to sleep and hand out blankets. There were many times when they would run out of room and so James would take a tally of many people they were over capacity and contact one of the other shelters and find out if they had room to spare, if they did he would divide up the extra people and direct them to the appropriate places. Then he would go home.
Of course, he had a long night ahead of him before he got that far, James thought to himself as he stepped into St. Mary of Angels: Down on Your Luck Shelter. The name was the reason why James volunteered here over any of the other shelters. It implied that these were people just like everybody else. That they had simply run into a bit of bad luck and just needed a helping hand and a place out of the rain until they got back on their feet.
Well, best get to work.
