Margerie stood by the shore of the river that ran near her home. It was a warm day despite the thick clouds that hung overhead threatening rain. If she were a smarter creature she might have decided to stay in the shelter of the giant trees that grew about her home. However, she had spent the entire night dreaming about the new "fortune telling" method her vulpine friend had told her about. She had been so excited to practice this new deception that Margerie found that she simply couldn't wait for a clear sky to go collect stones. She would have gone at night but as her head only came up to the chest of the average mare and the odds of running into a predator that would like to make a meal of her was much greater at night than it was in the day.
With a dainty step Margerie picked her way along the rocky river bank seeking out smooth stones of different colors or crystals of interesting shapes that occasionally washed up. "If I can find enough this might even become more popular than the normal method." She said to herself as she nudged a rock. "Wouldn't that be nice?"

Rain was coming. Even without the dark clouds that loomed above like some ominous warning, Rhodesia could still feel it against her fur, the air saturated so heavily with the humidity of the approaching storm. She would have to hurry, in that case; Rain was beautiful, but it took so long for her wings to dry out if they became soaked.
Down a short ways from Margerie, lost in her own world and unbeknownst to the other mare's presence, the Alicorn continued to nose around the shoreline of the river, where the grasses and dirt gave way to the multitude of rocks that comprised the river's bank. It wasn't until the Quilin's comments to herself made Rhodesia's ears twitch unconsciously, pulling her back to reality and compelling her to look up in search of the voice.

Margerie picked up a greyish stone peppered with black flecks only to realize too late that she didn't have a proper grip on it. The stone slipped out from between her teeth and into the shallows of the river with an audible plop. The qui'lin frowned, it had landed in the mud and she had no intention of getting a mouthful of wet, slimy dirt for one rock. She turned herself about to see if she missed anymore like it and felt her jaw drop when her eyes fell on the form of a full-sized soquili behind her. She had not even heard the other, her senses were dulling from her comfortable life.
Quickly Margerie scanned the mare's traits for signs of a threat. One horn, spiral, belonging to a unicorn, the healers of the land. Lion-like tail and cloven hooves to match. Primarily unicorn decent. Wings, one set, wind but see through at the edges. Potential angeni heritage somewhere down the line? Over all, alicorn. Primarily a peaceful breed and not a threat. Margerie let herself relax.
"Good day." She called in greeting not moving from where she stood. Just because most alicorns were peaceful didn't mean they all were and Margerie needed to be absolutely certain that her life was not in immediate peril.

Rhodesia had tilted her head at the sound of the water popping. Since she was behind the little mare, she was unable to see exactly what she was doing, and so out of curiosity, had begun to take a step forward with the intentions of investigating. But Margerie's abrupt turn around caught her mid-step and she froze in place, lithe body leaned forward in motion with one cloven hoof raised.
"Good day," the Alicorn bid in return, holding her position as though there was nothing unusual about it at all. "... It's going to rain."

"What?" Margerie blinked then looked up. Oh yes, rain. The presence of the other had made her forget that for a moment. "Yes, it is. Perhaps not for a while though. It is difficult to tell with the storms." Her eyes wandered down to the alicorn mare's hoof where it had frozen awkwardly. Who stood like that? not predators that was for sure. They preferred a very solid footing so that they could launch into an attack quickly. Either she was a very good actor or she truly was no threat to the miniature horse.
"The trees provide plenty of shelter, though, and even with my short legs it only takes a few minutes to reach them." She supplied wondering if the mare was worried about the rain or if she was just trying to make conversation. Margerie's eyes narrowed to try and determine this but she simply didn't have enough clues to make a guess. She was very good at gathering clues but not that good.
"I would not worry about it too much." It was a safe enough statement at least. If she was worried it might bring comfort and if not it just sounded conversational. This was Margerie's game. Reading people and figuring out what they wanted to hear. Her clients called it fortune telling.

"I suppose when we hear the thunder, then we shall know," Rhodesia agreed, with an almost sheepish dip of her head. Slowly, she lowered her pearlescent hoof, but whether it was in an attempt to be inconspicuous or to avoid putting her rather long fetlocks into the water was anyone's guess.
"I thank you for the information about the trees," she continued, voice gentle but somewhat even-toned. "I don't know this area very well, and I would like to avoid getting wet, if possible."

Margerie nodded sagely, "Or when we feel the first drop of rain upon our coats." She said it in such a way that it would sound as though she were quoting someone else's words. She wasn't. Margerie simply enjoyed spouting these tidbits to make herself sound more educated than she was.
"Well if you are truly afraid of getting wet then let's not wait for the storm. We can take shelter now. I'll even read your future for you if you'd like." Margerie had not collected enough stones to try out the new method with those but there was nothing stopping her from destroying one of her rock pictures to play. And if that didn't work there was always the tried and true method of reading body language and making educated guesses.

The full-sized mare chuckled lightly. "Water doesn't frighten me, but my wings take an awfully long time to dry, and that's an amount of time I'm afraid I don't really have." But at the suggestion of the fortune telling, Rhodesia cocked her head to one side again, bright eyes fixed on the Qui'lin in an almost expressionless way.
"Oh? You're a seer?" She sounded mildly excited at the prospect.

"That's a good reason to be afraid of water though." Margerie smiled at her own little joke before clearing her throat and readopting her serious demeanor. "That is one word for it. Many people have called it many things but the fact remains that I can see distant truths." It was not a complete fabrication. Perhaps that was why she could say it without the slightest hint of quivering in her voice. "Would you like me to see what the spirits have to tell me about you? Or what they have in store for you? If love awaits you or adventure?" If there was one thing she had gotten good at since leaving the valley it was making her sales pitch. She didn't get paid for her work directly but the more large creatures that thought she was directly connected to the spirits the better her life was. Fewer beings were willing to kill a mini that had friends in high places. They didn't want to risk getting cursed.

She smiled as best she could and took a step towards Margerie, though still was careful to avoid the water. She didn't fear the water! ... Did she? A thought to ponder later, perhaps, as for now there was a better prospect to consider.
"I would love to see the process, yes!" The Alicorn replied with a hint of excitement. But after a split second's pause, she added somewhat hastily, "If you don't mind, that is."

"Oh no, it's quite alright or I wouldn't have offered. Please, step this way." Maregrie turned west, away from the water and towards the trees that would lead to her home. They all bore heavy boughs and branches covered in thick leaves, green just for the warm seasons. Each trunk was so thick that it would take at least two adult men with their arms linked to fit around even the smaller trees. The ground was speckled with faint patches of light that still managed to filter through the clouds and treetops but if one looked ahead further they would see that the light stopped penetrating altogether.
"It's not much further." Margerie commented to break the silence and offer comfort. And indeed not two minutes had passed before the first black and white stone spiral appeared at the base of an old tree. The mark of Margerie's home. Inside there were drawings made from rocks all over the ground. Most were simple black or white spirals but others were entire pictures of the sky or the distant mountains.
"Please, make yourself at home." The small qui'lin offered.

Without a word, she followed after Margerie, and was quickly overcome with awe as they traversed deeper into the forest. Rhodesia remained quiet, but couldn't resist deviating here and there along the way, always staying upon the path but straying just enough to look at simple-seeming things, such as a flower or an odd patch of dusty grass and the way the light from above hit it. But she was prompt in catching back up with her hostess, and again dipped her head in gratitude at the show of hospitality.
"You are very kind, miss...?" Abruptly, she realized that she had not caught the Qui'lin's name.

Margerie felt her cheeks warm as she realized that she had not even offered the mare her name. Come to think of it the alicorn mare hadn't given Margerie her name either. They had simply breezed straight past introductions and yet here was Margerie leading her into her home. It seemed quite stupid a thing to do. "Margerie. My name is Margerie. And yours?" She could have pretended to know already but that would have been setting herself up for failure. Not that she hadn't tried such a trick once before. It had blown up in her face spectacularly and she had not done it since. It was easier to just leave introductions to their normalcy.

"I am Rhodesia, miss Margerie," the Alicorn offered, bowing her head this time, low enough for the tips of her dusty green hair to brush against the ground. She straightened back up and added, "I apologize for not introducing myself before. It was rude of me, but sometimes I can get carried away by my curiosity."
