For the first time in a long time, Cian felt alive. It was probably because Hogwarts was nothing like the small fishing town he had grown up in. Of course there were still elderly people wagging their fingers at him if he broke a rule, but he was also surrounded by more kids than he'd ever seen in his life.
He couldn't help but wander the grounds watching and listening to the groups of older kids gathered reminiscing about the last year and what they looked forward to doing again. He couldn't help but feel left out of the comraderie. He hadn't really made friends with anyone on the train, he had slept most of the way probably because he had stayed up so late the night before. He was rather lucky that no one had pulled any nasty pranks on him while he had been sleeping.
So he wandered the Hogwart's grounds mostly in search of a new friend. Sure he could have stuck with the other first year Gryffindors, but where was the fun in that? He'd more than likely see their faces every day for the next 6 years, why not try to expand his horizons?
He stood in the middle of the green grass glancing around, trying to figure out which group to approach. In the end, he decided it would be easier to approach just one person. It would more than likely be easier to deal with kids one on one at first.
He spotted a short blonde girl wearing a pink headband and slowly made his way over, jingling his pockets nervously as he bit his bottom lip as he tried to think of what to say. "Hello," he started shooting her a beaming smile. "My name is Cian. This is my first year, what's your name?"

Emma had gone outside since her homework was done and took a note book, quill and inkwell with her. When she found a good spot to sit near the lake. She started to wright down what foods would she'd cook today if she could.
She looked up when she heard a greeting. He was a fellow Griffindor by the name of Cian. "I'm Emma," she replyied with a small smile. She felt a little odd since she was still in her first year though she didn't really want to say she was. "You can sit if you wan't I'm don't really doing anything of any importance." she said with a srug.

Cian looked the girl over a little more closely and his mouth twitched. Of all the people he had to choose from he had picked a gryffindor! He laughed inwardly, which caused his eyes to twinkle merrily. "Well nice to meet you Emma. I think I've seen you around the Gryffindor Common room last night. Funny, here I was approaching you cause I thought you might be in a different house, I just have strange luck it seems." He said full of mirth.
"Why thanks." he replied sitting down next to her. "So you're working on homework already?" he asked curiously. "I'll probably tackle that stuff later. Though..perhaps it would be smarter to do it now?" He asked her cocking his head to the side.

Emma nodded knowing how it was having something not go the way you think it would. "Oh yes, things often turn out unexspected." she said, he had a nice smile, it some how reminded her of a sunrise on a fall morning.
She chuckled lightly when he asked her if she was doing homework. "No, I did my homework already. It's better to weed the fealds beore you lose your harvest." she said making a farming analogy.
She lookded down at the notebook. "This is sorta a game I play, I like cooking, and I'll wright down what I'd cook, or what I ate. Sometimes I try to figure out what ingredince where used, each person cooks a little diffrent. I'm just wrighting what I would cook today." she exsplained.

Cian grinned back and leaned back taking in a deep breath of the fresh air. "Exactly. Sometimes unexpected things turn out to be the best things to ever happen." He added with another toothy grin.
Cian had no clue what she had just said. Weed fields before you lose your harvest? Sounded kind of like some sort of farmer's analogy. Which was odd coming from such a dainty looking girl. Perhaps she wasn't as dainty as she looked?
"Interesting way to put it," He commented and followed her gaze to her notebook. "A game," he repeated sounding almost skeptical. He cocked his head to the side as she continued speaking. "So a sort of guessing game? Interesting. Good thing I've never heard of such a game, I'd probably mess up the recipes. I'm kind of..terrible in the kitchen, just like my mom." He confided. "Though..if you ever need a taste tester I'd be up for that." He added lookin at her rather eagerly.

Emma chuckled a little "Yes it can." she agreed. Emma smilled a little, "Yeah Sort of." she said when she thought of his explantion for the game.
She didn't know many mom's that couldn't cook, unless they were sick. "You're mom can't cook huh? I sort of started with my Mom, then took her place. When she got sick. I had to prepare something diffrent for her, because when your getting trement for canser you can't really have complex foods, good thing we live on a farm and help out the owners..." she said with a glance at the ribbon on her right arm.
She smiled her cheeks turning pink. "I found Potion's to be simmalar to cooking, if you forget an ingredent it might turn out bad ... well maybe a bit more dangerus if you forget in the potion, then in the food, but it's how you prepare the sepret parts that can change.... And if you want to try some of my cooking I don't have a problem with that." she added that last part because it sounded like he really liked food.

Cian rather liked the sound of her chuckling. It was adorable. He shook the hair that had fallen into his eyes away and leaned back on his hands and looked around.
He nodded when she agreed with his explanation. It seemed a bit odd to make a game out of guessing ingredients..but he supposed people who liked to cook often did that. It made life more exciting for them, possibly even more fun.
Cian couldn't help but laugh at the look of disbelief on her face on hearing his mother couldn't cook at all. "Not a lick. Kind of funny since she's super smart. It's the one thing she can't do and it drives her nuts she can't tackle a simple recipe without making a disaster of it." He explained.
He felt sad to hear that her mother had gotten sick and Emma had to grow up faster because of it. Still that was what did when things got difficult. He couldn't help but admire Emma for that. "Did she," he stopped not sure if asking her this would be wise or not and then noticed the ribbon on her arm. He winced realizing that her mother had more than likely not survived the cancer. "I'm sorry, I didn't see the ribbon until now. It must have been hard to lose her." He said with sympathy.
He rather liked how she compared cooking to potions, it rather made more sense to him that way. Not that he was particularly good at potions. He couldn't help but grimace remembering what had happened to a potion his mother had tried to teach him before he had come to Hogwarts. It had exploded all over them and his hair had gone green for a week.
"Well I'm not very good at potions either," He confessed with a slight laugh. "I would definitely like to test out your cooking."

Emma smiled slightly "I know what that's like, I'm rather clumsy, always tripping on random thing, is the one I get the most...yet somehow in the kitchen it's different," she chuckled "Once I was cooking on a campfire, and was helping my dad put some more wood on the fire, and the pot was knocked over. We only manged to save one bowl. So the five of us that were there had like three spoon fulls each of beans.... Now that I think about it Granda did mange to start the fire pretty quickly." she said chuckling a little at the memory though at the time she was pretty embraced
Emma smiled "It was, but I think at the same I think that might have been why I was adopted. She could have been in a remission at the time or something. I don't really know, I never really asked my dad why he and my mom adopted me, I just know they couldn't have kids of their own. It's okay though since I don't really know about my birth parents. I love my mom and dad and cooking is a way to feel closer to her. They never once made me doubt that they didn't love me. So I never really cared about what I don't know about my past, I was about six or seven when she did get the cancer though." She didn't really feel sad about it as much as she had when her mother died. "Pink sorta became my color after that though." she blushed at the last part but didn't mind.
Emma chuckled a little more "I'll have to send an owl home then, so they can send me some of our vegetables. I know the school's food comes up by magic but it's already prepared. I like how cooking espeily something shared with someone else can bring people together even if they sometimes are fighting. Fuiding on the other had takes a bit more then a well cooked meal to stop." she said with a small nod to the Slythren/Gryffindor fude that had been going on since the founding of the school.

Cian was a bit surprised to hear that Emma was clumsy. She didn't really look like she was. Normally when someone was clumsy they were covered in bandages or had scrapes and bruises all over. At least that's what he remembered from being around his cousins, Breton and Cedric.
"Well you certainly don't look like you're the clumsy sort. My cousins are constantly clumsy and are always covered in cuts and bruises. Although, I suppose that's because they can't do magic and fix those up." Cian laughed at her story. he could almost see it happen. It definitely sounded like a fun way to camp out.
"Sounds like it had to have been fun if not a bit annoying at the time. It sounds like you're really close to your family. Do you miss them at all?" He found himself asking.
He felt a slight tinge of homesickness. Although he liked the school and the new surroundings, he missed the normalcy of life at home. He hadn't really relaxed all that much here at the school and he missed being comfortable enough to be himself.
Cian was surprised to hear that she had been adopted after her adoptive mother had found out she had been sick. It was surprising that someone would put a child through something that tragic. Especially since they didn't have that much longer to live. It seemed almost selfish to him, but he wasn't going to say this.
"Oh, well that's possible. I suppose people can be in remission for several years before it comes back. I find it sad that they still haven't found a cure for cancer. I hope they find one soon. You were very lucky to have parents like that. Most kids don't." He replied thinking of not really knowing much about his birth father.
Sure his mother had made a point to tell him about the man and how he had died doing his job for the Ministry of magic. Still there was more that he wished he knew about the man. Like what he had been like as a child and if he was anything like his father. Sure he knew they both shared a talent for music, but he wanted to know more. Maybe one day he'd find out more about him.
"I see. I do think that Pink is definitely your color." He replied with a smile.
He was glad to hear that she was already planning to get some ingredients from home. He could probably ask for some as well, it was near harvest time and he'd more than likely get some if he were to ask. "You do that, I'll ask my mother to send some as well. We get some pretty great produce in our garden at home. Despite being a horrible cook, she's a great gardener." He replied with pride.
"I find feuds to be downright stupid. You'd think people would have better things to do with their time."

Emma chuckled a little, "It's true, I trip and drop things all the time, and knock things over." she said with a shrug "I but I guess that's given me tough skin."
She smiled fantly, "It's just me and my dad, my grandparents, really aren't my grandparets it's just that my dad and I live on a section of their farm and helps them out, as dose Mr. Gaffle. But then again the Shinton's are the closest thing I'll get to grandparents, and are like grandparents to me. but yeah I miss them. Even Mr. Gaffle as stern as he is. I mean if it weren't for any of them I wouldn't have a family at all." She admitted with a smile.
"What about you miss your mom?" She asked "It sounds like the two of you were close."
She chuckled again "Yeah, I may have done the pink a little much but I can't seem to stop myself." She said looking down at her parchment a little embraced.
"Feuds run deep, and it doesn't help that the older people, normaly parents, help in making the hate in the next generation, so that the two sides never end up getting along." she said solomly.

Cian was surprised that he was enjoying himself so much just sitting down and talking to Emma. He normally didn't sit still this long. It was rather refreshing to relax after that long ride on the train, he hadn't been able to sit at all on the train. he had been running all over and introducing himself to all the other first years.
"Well that's good, especially in this school. I imagine that you need pretty tough skin with all the spells and charms we'll get thrown at us. Though I bet that it won't be as hard as say second or third year will be. I can't wait to learn all I can about magic, it's just so exhilarating!" He exclaimed as he suddenly sat up in the grass and threw his arms out as he was hit the joy and excitement that had been coursing through him earlier.
"Oh well that's interesting. I guess you could say I have a pretty big extended family as well." He said with a broad smile.
"The small town my mother moved to after I was born has pretty much become a second family to us. She moved there with little more than nothing and they've helped her out a lot. It's small for a town, but pretty big as a family. I have gads of aunts and uncles, tons of cousins and of course my new dad. He's pretty awesome as far as dads come. I am what most would call a mama's boy and I'm not ashamed to admit it." he told her with a small smile as he shoved his hands into his pockets and glanced around the grounds.
"I guess what I miss the most about her is her perfume. She always smells like peaches and vanilla. That and she has the best laugh in the world. We do a lot together, like camping and hiking. We once went on a week long hiking trip which was amazing. She said we'd do it again this summer. I can't wait for it."
It wasn't until Cian thought over what she had said that he figured that she assumed his mother had died. "Oh, you think my mom died! No, my father died before I as born. My mom is very much alive. I really don't know too much about him, other than what she knew or remembers. Maybe one day I'll find out more about him."
"Do you want to go for a walk? It's getting kind of crowded here." He commented, and winced as another student stepped on his foot.
"It's sad that adults do that to their kids. One thing I'm grateful for is a mother who never tried to influence me in that way. She always said that her beliefs were hers not mine and that I would have to decide what I believed on my own."

Emma nodded "Yeah I guess it is a good thing I do." she sid with a bit of a chuckle.
Emma looked over at him, "Oh no, I didn't think she had died. I just assumed that you missed her because your here, and your mom's at home. Sorry if it came out like I though she died... I said "were close" as you can't be with her now." she said realizing how he thought she thought that.
She looked around a bit, and put the booklet in her bag. "Yeah alright." she said as she put the stopper back into the inkwell but not before some spilled on her blouse "That's a first.... normaly it's mud." she chuckled a little at herself.
Once she knew the stopper was in fully she put the inkwell in her bag as well. "I don't know if Adults do it intentionally. I mean, we wouldn't be the way we are if it weren't for the people, more so the Adults, around us. Kind of like soup. Each influence can make someone or something, better or worse." she said with a shrug.

Cian grinned along with Emma's chuckle. It was nice to meet someone so refreshing and fun to hang around. He decided he would have to make it a habit to seek her out on a regular basis.
"Do you have any friends here yet?" He asked curiously. "If you don't mind I'd like to have you as a friend."
Cian shrugged at Emma's words. "I guess I just understood you wrong." he replied. "It's all right. I do rather miss her. That's rather normal though, I haven't been away from her until now. I suppose in time I'll get used to being away."
Cian watched as she put away her things and was surprised that she told him that normally it was muddy. "Well it does rain a lot here I suppose." he reasoned. "At least we're having a nice sunny day on our first weekend here." he said taking a deep breath of fresh air.
"That's a rather good analogy," He said with a smile as he got to his feet and offered her his hand. "I shall have to remember it. Need a hand up?"

Emma nodded "Yeah, I have friends, but I'd like another." she said with a smile. "One is the granddaughter of the farm owners, but she's a few year's ahead of us though." she admitted.
Emma smiled a little sadly, "It's harder the closer you are with someone. But you'll see her come the winter holodays." she said, like it was the birght side of things.
Emma chuckled a little "Not really because of the rain, but I have found that diffrent durt types stay wetter for longer then others.... " she smiled looking up at the sky.
"It was the only thing that came to mind," she admited, taking his hand as he had offered it. "Thanks."
