In architecture, a crypt is a stone chamber or vault beneath the floor of a burial vault possibly containing sarcophagi, coffins or relics. In more modern terms, a crypt is most often a stone chambered burial vault used to store the deceased. Crypts are usually found in cemeteries and under public religious buildings, such as churches or cathedrals, but are also occasionally found beneath mausolea or chapels on personal estates. Wealthy or prestigious families will often have a 'family crypt' or 'vault' in which all members of the family are interred. Many royal families, for example, have vast crypts containing the bodies of dozens of former royals. In some localities an above ground crypt is more commonly called a mausoleum, which also refers to any elaborate building intended as a burial place, for one or any number of people.

In Nocturne, the crypts hold mostly the recovered bodies of fallen soldiers. Within these crypts is a recent addition; the crypt keeper, Qaar D. Ackerman has constructed his own residence in an unused room of the crypts. He took an oath to never tamper with the dead in these crypts, but he still performs his own biological experiments in this room. Th door is always locked, even if he is inside. He holds the only key to this room.

The crypts; they were in ruins. The damage done to them was probably left over from a battle or a long period of neglect. Though, the damage done to it wasn't like just from neglect. It seemed as if someone had purposely destroyed the entrance to prevent others from entering. Why would this be? Qaar was curious about this.

The man, Qaar, was someone pulled out of history into this world of madness. He came from a time many, many years in the past. And he didn't just suddenly appear; Qaar had always been there, but in hiding. A madness that took over his mind and body had now turned him in a monster. He had to collect himself and learn to control his madness and new body. He had succeeded and now is here to rejoin society as best he could. The first thing he had to do, though, was find a new place to live. He needed a location that was out of the way where nobody would come to find him. These crypts were the best place for that. There were no other known entrances to this place and there was most likely somewhere on the inside of the crypts that he could hide within. Reconstruction of this place would have to begin soon.

Qaar moved closer to the rubble, examining the destruction. The entrance seemed like just a tunnel that turned into a staircase immediately, likely leading directly to the main crypt. Qaar knelt down and placed his hand on a large stone. "I'll have to move these out of the way to get in there. Hopefully, there isn't a whole lot more of this stuff to move once I'm inside." Qaar stood up and grabbed lapels of the cloak he wore, then ripped it off of his body. His skin was pale, blood stained his clothing all over, and a foul stench wafted from him. He knelt down and reached both arms around the large stone, then lifted it up. It wasn't that heavy. A regular man could lift it. Qaar tossed the stone off to the side and turned back. He went to move more stones. Most of them were the same size or smaller, but then he came across the larger obstacles. A fallen pillar was there and weighed at least twice as much as the stones from before. Qaar attempted to move the pillar, but it wouldn't budge. This would be one hell of a damper on his reconstruction of the crypts.

Cloaked from head to toe in a black, leather coat, Nai walked past the crypts just as Qaar began throwing the rubble behind him. She dodged the randomly thrown stones easily enough with the least movement possible. They did, though, pose enough of a nuisance for Nai to look at their source. She saw a rather tall, rotting man working at opening what she recognized as one of the larger entrances to the old crypt. the girl remembered, Her meager interest barely caught, Nai stopped her walk to the store to watch the stranger's progress. He seemed to have gotten himself stuck with a particularly large piece of rubble. A quick scan showed that he wouldn't be able to further proceed without either moving that rubble or moving any of the other equally large pieces.

It puzzled the girl, this man's dilemma. She had seen others like him easily smash dents into solid walls. The undead were often favored in Nocturne's underground fighting rings for their impressive physical specs, but here was one struggling with simple construction work. The thought that perhaps he might be new to his body entered Nai's mind. Perhaps he was a trainee. Certainly a lot of inexperienced people with inexperienced postures were present around in the new Nocturne so it wouldn't be a rare case.

Having the crypts reopened was important enough for some effort to be used to help this stranger, so with just enough volume to be heard, Nai instructed, "Increase your muscle mass." Admittedly, while she had seen ferals perform superhuman feats, she didn't really know the exact process behind these feats. All she knew was what she could observe: usually before large bursts of strength, their muscles would suddenly bulge unnaturally. She could only reason such a result to be from an increase in muscle mass.

A voice came from behind him. It was a small voice, likely a young girl's voice. Why the hell would a lady be anywhere near Qaar in the first place? He was disgusting. The rotting man turned his head to see behind him. "What did you just say to me? Increase my muscle mass?" Qaar examined her. She was cloaked so not much of her could be seen, but it was obvious that she had a smaller frame, judging by her height and the lack of power behind her voice. Normally, Qaar's curiosity wasn't seeming to take effect as he looked at her. He had been having issues lately controlling his desires to eat others. Along with that, the madness that had infected him in his early years as an undead thing would arise sometimes. He would be curious as to what he could do to people as experiments. Could he take off there arm and replace it with the arm of a goblin? Maybe he could attach additional arms to people people. Additional legs? Maybe a second pair of eyes on their back.

"Look, I don't know exactly how I'd be capable of 'increasing my muscle mass', but if that's actually possible, I'd appreciate some advice on how to do that." Qaar turned away from her and stared at the rubble for just a moment. "Can I actually do something like that? I've never heard of something like that. Then again, I have been in hiding for six hundred years or so..." Qaar looked as his hands as he delved into thought. His gaze shifted and he stood up tall. He reared back with a punch and let loose right at the large pillar that stood in his way. His fist connected and all he heard was a loud crack. Some of the stone chipped off, but it was barely a dent. He looked at his hand. The crack came from his knuckles. Three of his knuckles actually dislocated violently, creating a loud, cracking sound. It didn't hurt one bit though, even as he looked at the three, dangling integers. "Well I'm definitely not a human anymore if that didn't hurt me. But...what am I...? I've been trying to figure that out for about six hundred years."

"Feral," Nai started but did not finish rattling off the rest of the list of information she had categorized on Ferals over the years. Qaar had a name now. If he wanted more, he could look it up himself. What he needed now was a specific bit of information on Ferals, a bit Nai hadn't bothered to store. Questions like how Ferals gained their superhuman abilities or why they were able to manipulate their body never plagued Nai. Why would she need to know all that? It would be of little help to her when it came to shooting their head or heart, their fatal points.

Now, though, the information she had never bothered to think about had suddenly become something worthwhile. Her mind trailed into several lines of thought simultaneously as she looked for the answer, ideas jumping from one line to another. Even just this thinking, though, took time and effort. Slowly but surely, Nai was beginning to consider the reopening of the crypts not worth all this. Sloth had already given up. If he ever wanted to get somewhere, he had no need for the crypts or any secret passages.

the girl called mentally. As she expected, no answer came. Ever since Sloth reappeared, he had mysteriously gone missing. While he wasn't one to respond so casually in the first place, Nai hadn't even been able to catch so much as a flicker from him.

Well, that was it. Without X, she couldn't think of many things that could cause the growth of muscles. In a natural monotone, she dully repeated her thoughts on the matter, "Muscle growth is natural for your kind. Use energy. Flex a lot." It probably sounded silly, but that was the only human equivalent to the Ferals' unnatural muscle growth Nai could think of. Then, she walked away, having said all she could. Staying any longer would be a waste. She still wanted the crypts open, of course, but there were better ways to do it than trying to explain something she knew nothing about. She'd be back with a cannon.

"I just have to flex and use energy... How does that work?" Qaar stood still for a moment and though. He looked at his hand. His fingers still were dangling. He would then grab each of them and then shove them back into the sockets. He moved his hand around and adjusted to his fingers being back in the sockets. Now was when he had to trust what that girl said and attempt to increase his muscle mass. Qaar would rear back another punch and focus his energy. He had at least learned that much. As he flexed his muscle, he tried to focus his energy into his muscled. Almost instantly, he felt his arm bulge and increase in size. He felt his strength rising. Qaar ran forward and slammed his fist into the middle of the pillar, shattering the stone, and breaking it in half. Qaar's muscle mass quickly went back to normal and now that pillar was the same size as the stones from before. He sat still for a moment to regain his stamina and then began to move away the rubble.

Frag Shot
Rank: E
Description: Standard attack for the cannon. The gunner uses a fragmentation round and fires it. Upon impact, the round explodes and sends shrapnel flying in all directions.

Nai reentered the reconstruction (or would this be deconstruction?) scene with the rusty, old cannon. Despite its appearance, it still packed the needed punch. Deliberately, Nai settled the cannon on her shoulder and took the proper stance, spreading her legs shoulder-width so she had a solid base to take the inevitable recoil of the cannon's shot. The feel of the gun in that position felt comfortable enough and Nai set it down to load in one of the frag shots she bought. She raised the cannon once more and settled it into its previous position. As deliberately as she positioned the cannon, she aimed it. This wasn't a overly slow kind of deliberation as it was just properly paced to both attract attention and ensure she was handling the cannon properly her first time. If Qaar didn't notice the silent gunslinger by now and properly prepare himself then, well, he was going to die pretty quickly even without Nai shooting a cannon shot at him without verbal warning. Someone like that she had no qualms about killing. She shot and the frag shot rocketed out. Upon impact, whatever it impacted on (either the rubble Nai aimed for or Qaar if he was too slow to keep alive), the shot would explode and send shrapnel flying everywhere. The shrapnel wouldn't do much to the rubble, but the explosion alone should make it more manageable. [1/1]

Qaar wiped his brow. He thought he'd be sweating at this point, but he remembered that he couldn't sweat anymore. Actually, he just realized that he doesn't get that exhausted. After his first use of his muscle augmentation, he was was a bit tired, but not that badly. Even now, he felt as if he could keep working for hours more at his full capacity. As he turned around to toss away some rubble, he noticed that the female from before was back and....she had....a cannon? Why the hell did this little girl have a ******** cannon? Wait, why the ******** wasn't Qaar getting out of the way!? Qaar noticed that the girl was preparing to fire the cannon and he quickly jumped o the side. He wasn't quick enough. The frag shot had just connected with the rubble and caused a large explosion of rubble and shrapnel. Qaar lied on the ground for a few minutes and then stood up. He looked along his left arm and his side. There were chunks of shrapnel stabbed into his body. "Well that's interesting." He then switched his attention up to the girl with the cannon. "So why the ******** would you fire a ******** cannon at me? Is it because I'm a 'Feral' or whatever you called me?"

Nai didn't immediately answer Qaar. If Qaar didn't seem very worried for his own injuries, Nai had even less reason to care. Only after determining that it would be most efficient for Qaar to clear away all the smaller pieces of rubble before firing another shot did Nai bother to bother with Qaar. Most people, in her experience, weren't the type to go back to work with an unanswered question. Matter-of-factly, she stated, "No," while carefully reloading her cannon. As she considered excuses like, "I gave you enough time to move," a waste of time, Nai didn't bother with such words. In fact. She wasn't trying to give a good impression to Qaar. If she was, she would have given a verbal warning in the first place instead of being so apathetic to Qaar that she didn't mind killing him if he didn't have the ability to notice the giant, rusting cannon being creakily moved about behind him.

"Pshh... ********' b***h..." Qaar started to pull piece of shrapnel out of his side slowly as he walked to the entrance of the Crypts. He was right. This entrance was just a short tunnel and then a staircase down into the crypts. "Thanks for the help, anyway. I'll be down here." Qaar walked down the steps into the crypts and looked around. There were plenty of graves everywhere, but Qaar didn't care. He had control over his urges for the most part, enough so that he wouldn't desecrate the dead of the nation he now felt resided in. He didn't want any enemies here. Qaar would continue to trudge through the halls of the dead. He examined the walls. The gothic architecture and murals indicated that the crypts were definitely old, ancient maybe. At the end of the hallway, Qaar came across and wooden door. It was opened. He pushed through to find a private crypt that was large enough for a man to live. It was empty. It had a coffin crypt in the center and plenty of room for Qaar to move around in still. "I suppose this could be my new home. Sure is cozy.

Nai dropped the now useless cannon before descending into the crypts herself and looking around. The inside seemed relatively untouched. Good. That meant that the passage to the church likely remained as it was as well. By this point, she had lost sight of Qaar. Not good for her. She didn't particularly care for him, but judging from his apparently self-driven urge to re-open the crypts, he could be trusted to keep the crypts open. It would be very useful for Nai for there to be a reason, a person to be exact, that kept the crypts from being closed once more. His notice of her shot had been slow, but he wasn't hopeless. After all, he managed to live despite realizing the danger he was in so late. Just a little help would make him self-sustainable in the rough city of Luimira.

The problem was he didn't seem to have a single idea in what he would like help with. He didn't even know what he was. Nai doubted he knew what he wanted to be. She turned around and made her way back out of the crypts. She'd just grab the first thing she saw for class manuals. Elements were another matter. Whatever, it wasn't uncommon for new trainees to know absolutely nothing so there was the rare book that contained low-ranking skills for all the elements. It just needed to be at the CAZ for Nai.

Qaar had sat on the coffin crypt in the center of the room for a good while, plucking shrapnel for his corpse-like body. He tossed all of the piece into a corner and left them. Once he had gotten it all out, he stood up and looked at the wounds. They were pretty noticeable, but nothing was really that wrong with him. Well, nothing was too wrong for a Feral. Qaar needed to explore a bit more. He had no idea what the layout of this area was like and he felt that he needed to learn. Qaar exited the room and began to wander. He went through many different hallways and eventually came across the main room. It was where he first had entered the crypts. He didn't know what had happened to that female, but he didn't seem to really care. After all, she had just recently fired a cannon at him. She may not have had the intent to kill, but she definitely didn't care if he died (again) or not. Qaar sat down on the ground and then leaned back to lie down. He would just waste away some time here for a while before seeking some purpose in the city of Luimira. He did, though, feel like a purpose as the crypt keeper would keep him plenty occupied in the city.

The three necessary manuals in hand, Nai descended into the crypts once more. Good for her, Qaar was laying right in the center of the main room, completely vulnerable and defenseless. If she had any teaching desire, she would have attacked him then and there to show his mistake. Thing was, though, she had no teaching desire. She would stay with Qaar, as was customary for those of higher ranks, but she would do nothing beyond handing him the books she had in hand and sitting down somewhere close enough to keep him from accidentally killing himself (again) while training.

Nai walked up to the laid out Feral and held the books up where he could see them. Then she dropped them right onto his stomach. If he bothered to accept the meager help, he would see that a Biochemist manual, a Feral guide, and a Basic Elemental Skills pamphlet were what was dropped onto him. She then walked away without another word to one of coffins in the walls at waist-level. She pulled it out to form a makeshift worktable where she could dump out all of her mechanist parts. Sloth might have liked the excuse to do absolutely nothing, but Nai wasn't going to waste her time.

A sizable weight slammed against Qaar's gut, but he barely felt it. Well, there was no pain, only a jolt that grabbed his attention. Qaar looked up to see the female from before. His eyes fell down to see the books and the pamphlet. "What....is this?" Qaar sat up and picked up a book titled "Biochemistry" and then looked up to see the female from before walking over to the wall. "Study material? Really? You suddenly show up and give me this stuff? You're one weird girl. I hope you know that." Qaar looked back at the book and opened it's pages. He began to read. "Biochemistry is the study of life magics and sciences. Mastering the concepts of life allows for a Biochemist to use their powers. Qaar sighed. "That's pretty ******** ironic, ain't it?" Qaar would continue to read. "Biochemistry's mastery over life magics allow them to control their magic energy and create rifts of sorts. These rifts are doors that serve for the Biochemist to summon forth powerful creatures to assist them in battle. Just by focusing one's energy to call upon something, the Biochemist can easily perform summoning. After reading this excerpt, you should now know how to perform a summoning. All you have to do first is get something to summon." This made Qaar curious.

[Learned Summoning Mastery]

"All I have to do is just need something to summon. That should be simple enough... But what exactly can I summon? I've never tamed a beast before. I don't carry weapon or desire to... I'm a doctor... That's it!" Qaar knew just what he needed to do. He stuck out his palm and relaxed himself. He allowed for his magic energy to flow through him. Ironically enough for a man whom had died six hundred years ago, he managed to call upon life magic to create a rift just in front of his palm. In front of his palm, a metallic object began t materialize. It took a couple seconds, but it fully materialized now into a medical scalpel. "Well s**t. That's pretty damn amazing. We didn't use magic at all when I was alive all those years ago... It's hard to realize that I could have the entire time."

[Learned Summoning: Scalpel]

Qaar tried to grab hold of the scalpel, but it seemed to move away, just out of his reach. "That's weird..." Qaar reached again, but it moved away even more. He thought for a moment and then move his arm in closer. The scalpel, which was just levitating passed his hand, moved in with his arm. He closed his eyes for a moment and then reopened them. He thought for a moment on pushing the scalpel further away from him. It happened right away. The scalpel began to levitate away from is. He thought used his thoughts to bring it in closer. "I suppose I can telepathically control this. That seems...strange...but still useful." Qaar stopped focusing his energy and the scalpel fell to the ground. He turned his head to the female. He knew that she could hear him. "Hey, you. I'd like to know your name. And I'd like to know why you're giving me these things to learn."
