I was reading through an abandoned work of mine as a time killer, and realized I'd created a character who seemed very near the Manic Pixie Dream Girl. There were a few exceptions (she refused to move away from her job to accommodate her boyfriend's college choice, primarily), but for the most part, she fell into the trope.

So much for an interesting character. sweatdrop

Has this happened to you?

But. There's a trope for almost everything, which would include character types. Why would it be a bad thing? You can still make it interesting. I love tropes. I see them as tools, not a hindrance.

I can't particularly say I'm fond of love triangles, though. Those usually just get on my nerves. Love Dodecahedrons are hilarious, though.

True, there are. I guess I left out that I don't like MPDGs as a whole.

Ahahaha xD Those are hilarious as long as they're kept in check and done well.

I have done so. I was irked at myself and then gave myself the challenge of at least making them an interesting version of a troupe.

I'd love to say she was, but as the MPDG comes in a variety of forms, about the only thing I can bank on is that she's older than her male romantic interest by a significant margin (8 years, to be exact).

Then start giving her quirks. Start getting more specific. o u o

That's kind of the problem; MPDGs, by definition, are quirky. sweatdrop
They're the ones who break the depressed male lead out of his funk by enjoying life, listening to some select pop songs, and being completely devoted to the guy.

Hmm... then go for subtle. what other qualities do they have? I feel like when you think of your character, or any character, in such a general sense, they all feel like troupes. Just like with real people. It's the specifics, their likes and dislikes, their backstory and their decisions, ect, that make the character. Almost all characters fit into some kind of troupe.
