I hate that feeling. It makes me want to scrap everything I've come up with at that point which is, of course, a terrible idea. Editing can fix anything. I just hate re-reading my work and thinking, "My god.... I should start this over". So much for perfecting my third chapter. I've been stuck on the damn thing for a month now.
How is everyone else doing today?

Blech. I wanted to write something, but beyond a concept, couldn't come up with anything because I had a pressing matter at work that had to be done by the end of the day.
Masako/Katie hasn't progressed, either. I keep being distracted by other things.
So, instead, I'm working on a review/critique of another guildie's work - which I may be shortly interrupted on.
Have you considered writing the fifth chapter? Or maybe the eighth?

At least enough so it can progress, or is that what you're having difficulties with?
And ya I've thought about it. In fact, I went as far as to write a short blurb saying what I wanted to happen in the last bit of the chapter and then went to move on... But I couldn't rid the nagging feeling that chapter three still wasn't finished.

I do have a few scenes in mind for her, but they're missing her usual snark, which doesn't lend themselves to me writing them. I take it you're a linear writer, then? I have a tendency to jump from place to place.

I'm not much of a planner though which is why linear works better for me. Do you plan your work?

TaliaDelune Yes, typically I write chronologically. If I don't I have a bad habit of dropping whatever it is I'm writing all together. I'm not much of a planner though which is why linear works better for me. Do you plan your work? Sort of. I usually have a basic idea of what I want to happen; a few specific scenes, mainly. Beyond that, no. My character notes tend to develop over time, starting with a simple paragraph of what they look like, their job, and their basic attitude. Scene notes are vastly shorter, usually being something like: "One of her friends, Laura, tells her she's scared about Veronica's safety." Unlike character notes, which evolve over time and start to include key events (ie, "She may or may not actually be pregnant; see if it makes more sense if she is/isn't" ), my scene notes rarely evolve beyond the point of being crossed out or checked off. After I get the scenes written, if they aren't in order, I put them in order. As such, chronological contradictions and accidental repetition isn't uncommon for me (in Start, for example, I had Masako's little speech about foxes appear twice, and in Triste, I've had timeline errors, where she's met someone she's already met). Usually, revising them fixes that. The other times, I have to drop it.

Sure I think things through but that's about as far as it goes for planning with me. I know it will end up being my doom halfway through The S.A but I'm hoping I'll have accumulated enough filler by then.
Right now I'm more worried about why things are starting to sound a bit... poor, by my standards at least. Again, I know the issue of fluctuating quality should be saved until editing but one of my faults is editing while I go. Do you ever do that? I try not to but I can't help it.

Who ever said I plan these scenes out? I usually write the notes down because I don't have time to do the whole scene. Only for NaNo did I actually have a ton of scenes down before starting in on the writing, and that was because I wanted to start on Nov 1st. Occasionally, I'll write more than one note down for scenes. Really, I don't plan much. Probably a lot less than you think. Definitely a lot less than those people who say they have reams of notes on characters, world, cultures, and whatnot. Heck, only about a month ago did I do my research on guns to figure out what kind Masako uses. I'm still looking for a police officer to verify that the third section (and unposted fourth section) are procedurally correct. It was also about a month ago that I found a source for my NaNo prologue (and I was terribly incorrect about it, so that requires a full rewrite). Half the time, I'm listening to a particular song or album when I write, and that shapes the scene.

Still, you seem to do a lot of research which is good. I've tried that. In fact- when I was looking for work- I took a position with a temp agency so I could get inside a factory to see the inner workings of it all. It was interesting from a creative stand point. It really helped me flesh out where my main character Alice works when she takes a contract with the Association (I think I might be rambling about stuff I haven't told you about). I don't usually share my work- not my serious projects. I've never posted The S.A but I'm pretty sure I've sent a few chapters to some guild members as per their request. I just can't remember who. redface

At this point, I've sent out FS's first chapter to several people, as well as taken out a copyright on it, so I'm a lot less concerned about it being lifted than I was before. Not that it seems to have mattered; yours is one of two reviews I've received on it, and the other one was shorter. And...I need to cut this short and scamper off. Sorry. sweatdrop
