It was a fine, early morning in the market place to trade and sell one's wares. Mirror Shards, who was aware of this, packed up his finest pieces and headed out to the village square to find a place he could set up his booth. Having located a place where many ponies were sure to come by, he put up a stand and set down his glass works of art.
There were bottles, dishes, and jars of every size, shape, and color. There were little spun glass animals and flowers as well as mosaics of broken glass shards. Mobiles of colored sea glass dangled from the stall front and caught the light while crystal wind chimes produced merry tinkling melodies while speckling their surroundings with tiny rainbows.
Most wondrous of all, however, were the mirrors that were put on display. Some had transparent crystal frames while others were decorated with vibrant glass butterflies that seemed like they would fly off on a whim and roses that actually emanated the fragrance of true roses. It was enough to make one believe that the mirrors themselves had to be extraordinary, but when a pony looked in one, all they saw was his or her reflection; nothing more, nothing less.
Though Mirror Shards, as a crystal unicorn, was not allowed to practice magic, his parents had once made magic mirrors for which they had been put to death. Anyone who had been around since the days of Red Pendragon knew this. Thus there were no magical objects available at Mirror Shards' stall, but he still proudly stood confident of the quality of his works.
Even despite the lack of magic his pieces possessed, he had kept the name that his family had left the shop with when it had been entrusted to him, which was 'Mirror Magic'. Along with the banner that displayed those words, the front of his stall had a small sign that read, 'Beware, glass-breakers, for you may get more than you bargained for.'

Spice wound her way past each stall at the market, a cloak draped over her to hide her pelt. She loved the market, but being shy, wasn't one for striking up a conversation. She more or less browsed until she found something she wanted to buy. Such was her day to day life of secrets.

"Glass wares for sale," Mirror called. "Looking glasses, drinking glasses, vases, bowls, mosaics, mobiles to catch the light! Glass wind chimes with the sound of heavenly bells! Glass of all colors, shapes, and sizes. Want a gift? Need something custom-made? Just ask and I'll be happy to accommodate."
During his usual sales pitch, the glass smith caught sight of someone - another unicorn - wandering around through the crowds. "Excuse me, miss," he beckoned to her. "Care to buy some glass? You look like a mare with a keen eye."

Raspberry Lace was looking for something special, something out of the ordinary, something worthy of being owned by her, but so far, she hadn't found anything. Everything at this marketplace was so plebeian, so ordinary, and the pony was about to give up and leave when she heard Mirror Shards call out about his booth.
Perhaps he would have something that would delight her.
She made her way over, glancing at his stall. The glass things, they were beautiful, especially the mirrors. She had to have one of those, and perhaps some of those little glass animals. They were charming, and appeared to be far higher quality than anything else she had seen so far.
"How much are the little animals?"

The unicorn hesitated as an elegant earth pony in pink and white approached his stall. She must have been a fine lady; perhaps even a noble. He hadn't been expecting anypony like her to come inspect his wares. Suddenly he grew very self-conscious of his work and used his magic to sweep his lesser pieces under the stand and out of sight, leaving only his finest to be viewed.
"Good day, mi'lady," he greeted with a respectful bow of his head. "Thank you for taking some of your precious time to come and have a look at my wares. I can see a pony of your exquisite tastes deserves only the best."
At her question, he looked to the tiny animals of spun glass and smiled faintly. He didn't seem to be a pony accustomed to smiling, but he did his best for this important potential customer. "That depends. Just which of them was mi'lady interested in?" He gestured with his horn.
"The amber fox? The crystal blue cat? Or perhaps..." He selected a pink glass figure from among the others, telekinetically using his magic to hold it up for her to see. "...perhaps this pink glass swan may suit you best. In fact, the moment I saw you, I knew you were meant to have it."

"Oh, they're precious." And he was fairly charming as well, something that certainly endeared him to her. She liked being flattered. "And if you say that she was meant to go home with me, then who am I to argue with that."
It saved her from trying to make a decision over which one she wanted to buy, and perhaps this way, she wouldn't end up going home with a whole little menagerie.
"And which of your mirrors, good sir, would you recommend? I like the rose one, but the rest are nice as well. It makes it so hard to decide."

Spice watched the blue unicorn, she was waiting for the other pony to be finished with her purchase before she was about to approach her kin. However she decided to be bold today, and slowly walked toward the stand.

Pleased at his success at winning the pink pony over, Mirror Shards was further pleasantly surprised when she mentioned his mirrors.
"So the lady was looking at the mirrors as well?" he remarked, moving a little to look over at them. "I'm flattered; I can see I was right in acertaining your wonderful taste. The rose-edged piece would certainly frame mi'lady's reflection suitably, but I fear it would distract from your beauty. Now this," he continued, turning behind him to retrieve something wrapped in cloth, "This, in my humble opinion, would be most appropriate."
As he removed the cloth (with a somewhat dramatic flourish), a larger mirror framed in a simple border of white gold glinted in the sun. Its only decoration was a delicate, detailed second border on the mirror itself - the pattern of lace in frosted glass etched into the piece. It was very much like the lace pattern that the pink pony sported.
"I'm afraid I never addressed your previous question as to the price of my glass animals," Mirror Shards suddenly remarked, "but if mi'lady chooses to buy one of my carefully crafted mirrors today - this one or another - I'll gladly include the pink swan as a complimentary gift."
Behind his customer, the stallion noticed another pony who seemed interested. By the time he had finished speaking, the newcomer had already chosen to approach without his prompting. "Welcome," he told her with a respectful dip of his head. Her cloak was somewhat suspicious, but he chose to ignore it for politeness' sake. "May I help you this fine day...?"

Spice gave a low nod and flicked her tail. "I was wondering if you had any jars for sale. Nothing really fancy."
Of course the other glass pieces caught her eye and as she looked at one of the mobiles. She didn't need to buy anything fancy today, she just needed some jars so she could work on making a few candles. Spice loved making candles, scented ones, ones that changed colors, ones that were designed like rabbits, you name it. She also dealt in making fireworks.

"If it's ordinary jars you're looking for, mi'lady, then perhaps a potter or pony of another profession would be better able to accommodate your needs," he answered. "I sell a few decorative vases and bottles, but they're more meant for display with uses like holding flowers as opposed to the practical uses of jars. They're probably more 'fancy' than you're looking for. May I ask what sort of jar you had in mind? Was there a particular purpose you required of it?"
Raising a brow at the suspicious cloaked pony, he wondered what business she had coming to a stall such as his if she hadn't been looking for the sort of wares he sold. He thought it would have been evident by his shop's name and reputation that it was a place of beauty, elegance, and luxury; things made to please the eye. Such fragile material as glass wasn't generally given practical or typical use, after all, since it could easily scratch or break. Had she possibly come for another reason...?
"Are you sure there isn't something else I can help you with, miss?"
