Alexis sat on the phone, calling up different areas talking to them about allowing her to do summer Art classes. Granted she knew she was asking the parks and other recreational centers she was contacting to well, donate their time but it was to a good cause!
She was sitting on the phone with a man she referred to in her head as Mr. Persnickety.
“Yessir I realize what I’m asking you is a lot. They’re not booked for those times are they?”
“Well then why are you worried about it? This is for a good cause.”
She sighed as she listened to the man on the other side, “But it’ll help keep the Kids out of trouble, you have children of your own, you know how it is. They’re in the age range I’d be teaching, you could let your kids some art education now.”
There was another pause as she listened, “No, no sir I understand. I was just hoping. Huh?”
“The School?”
“No I don’t work there anymore.”
“Why? Because I was being told I needed to fix it so the children had tests and test scores. You can’t learn art through test scores. It’s just ridiculous; I couldn’t allow myself to teach the children that sort of injustice.”
“I see. Well, thank you for your time.”
Most of the conversations went like this for a while. Everyone she called had a reason they wouldn’t let her use their venues. Despite agreeing with the cause, if she couldn’t pay the fees they couldn’t let her use them; despite not being booked up for the summer.
Finally though, she got a phone call. It was one of the teachers from Knightside; they’d heard what she was trying to do and agreed with it. They also had a few friends in high places as luck would have it.
“Wait so you mean, we can use one of the rooms at the Gallery? They said the room with the garden outside? You’re sure about this? I can’t afford to pay any money and I won’t be charging the student’s parents a lot for supplies, it’s going to be just enough to get them through two weeks.”
Alexis was nodding, as she listened and the occasional uh-huh followed. “No that’s great, it’s wonderful actually. The students could paint pictures of the flowers in bloom, and the building for one of their projects I’m sure it would be great!”
There was another pause as she listened to the woman on the other side, “Well yes, all the kids are eligible, I probably wouldn’t want to run it with over fifteen at a time though. I might have to do more than one session.” She answered, “No – no anyone in destiny not just the Knightside students.”
“Thank you again, I really appreciate this.”
Alexis pulled out her laptop and the ad she’d written a few days prior to amend the time and place of the classes. After all, she now knew where they were going to be learning; luckily she hadn’t posted the ad just yet. She also hoped that a lot of her former students would attend, but not only that – other students that were interested in art.
