Akane, while being basically as self-centered as a black hole is not, really a bad or unkind person. She may be forceful, completely unable to admit that she might be wrong, or that she has any real, deeper feelings, has an inability to take anything seriously (including herself), and completely oblivious to any discomfort she may be causing others, but all this is generally done with a purpose, if not more than one purpose. She is loyal to a fault and adores her younger sister immensely.
Despite her air-head looks and demeanor, Akane very much the accomplished Lady Tactician, and a closet control freak.
History
Childhood and Rising Through the Ranks
Akane was born to the Kuchiki Clan, and therefore born not only into unimaginable wealth, but also into great and heavy responsibility even though her older brother (Kuchikki Tao) was the heir.
This is not a Clan that takes failure in any way, and Akane, being a rather clumsy, cheerful, and naive child, had a very hard time trying to live up to her forefathers' expectations, especially as her basic demeanor rebelled at the thought of hurting anyone for any reason. Not once had she felt daunted of what was asked of her and she was always in dark terror of bringing disgrace to the family name. In a way, this scenario she found herself in broke her.
This rather merciless upbringing of hers made for a woman who is a control freak in every way, shape, and form, not being able to give one inch no matter what the circumstances. Pride was also heavily instilled in her (making things considerably worse) not only for her name, but for what she endured and still remained standing. It had been a close call in a number of cases, as during her teenage years, she had often contemplated preforming harakiri to save herself and her family the shame of that failure she believed she had no choice but to suffer.
It is this merciless approach that could be seen on her behavior as she rose fast through the ranks of the Gotei the moment she found her footing in the shinigami world. Although disguising her truer self under an easy-going and bubbly demeanor, the person behind the enchantingly blue eyes is about as forthcoming with mercy, sympathy, and empathy as the NSA is with information. Which brings us to the next point.
The Kuchiki also hold sway over the more sensitive materials pertaining to the mental health of all shinigami of the Seireitei as well and full documentation of all legal records in the Gotei's entire history. As such, secret-keeping is nothing new to Akane, being drilled into her from an early age. One would have better luck trying to sneak into the CIA HQ, than trying to figure out what goes on truly in the back of Akane's mind behind the multi-layered personality and lies she has the habit of concocting, if for no other reason than her own twistedamusement.
Above all this, she was also taught to be an excellent observer of behavior and environment, a skill that she makes no bones about exploiting when her rapidly speeding mind and high intellect is faced with the boredom she so abhors.
During her younger years it was these rapidly developing attributes and skills that scared most people away from her, and earn her no friends, however, nearing the end of her adolescence, Akane discovered a method of dulling this reaction towards her: being charming and putting on a show of inane incapability, both physically and mentally. Her naturally shocking good looks, which she lost no time learning how to embellish and accent, only underlined her ability to do so. No one could take a pretty air-head seriously.
This became a success she, herself, could not have foretold. Even those who suspected something untoward were happy enough to simply enjoy the show she put on. Of course, there is some doubt where her actual true loyalty lies, however, that is, perhaps, the way Akane is most comfortable: keeping people double guessing themselves when it comes to her thinking.
Interaction With Other Characters
Akane has one younger sister (DJ Hope 1990) Kuchiki Ayume remaining after the dramatic events which led to the Seireitei being almost wiped out. Their older brother was sadly killed in this battle, leaving her to shoulder the heavy Kuchiki mantle and take responsibility of those under the Clan's care.
Her younger sister is practically the only person Akane feels she can open up around and is an object of adoration for her. There is nothing she would not do for her and is not shy in letting everyone and anyone know this. She is also fiercely protective of her, but almost ridiculously proud of her as well.. Even when their beloved older brother (Kuchiki Tao) was alive, due to his being much older and also because of his very many duties, Akane and Ayume were always together like two peas in a pod.
Akane was no the more proud than when Ayume became captain of her own squad, one that truly mirrored the almost other-worldly beauty and serenity that Akane had cherished the most in being able to keep her precious sister from loosing, unlike herself: Squad 4, the Healers.
As such, Akane is fiercely jealous of anyone who tries to even get close to her sister and makes no balls of underhandedly getting in the way of anyone she does not approve of getting anywhere near her Ayume.
As such, the news of her adored little sister being engaged to someone she had no idea about drove her up the wall. The fact that this Nicholas Setsuka Azurian (Yumaki x-Set-x Kuraishi) was from the fast-rising and highly respected Azurian Clan did only very little to abate her fears.
She had first met this person during the official engagement ceremony and had gone livid with rage as she recognized him as being the pervert who had most definitely touched her rear during one of her numerous shopping trips to Rukongai. This little fact Akane has carefully kept from Ayume, but has since been behaving less-than-civilly towards Setsuka behind her sister's back, attempting to drive him away with whatever means necessary.
She has thus developed a vast variety of patented jibes and nicknames designed to demolish morally, having convinced herself that no sister of hers was going to marry a pervert like him, Azurian Clan or no.
Examples of Akane's pet jibes (including nicknames) are the following:

"...that damn Chibi Taichou... I might send him some milk later...who knows? He might actually grow into something vaguely man-like...."
"...Nicky-chan....."
"...Kinky-chan...."
These, naturally, are not used when Ayume is anywhere in the vicinity.

Inner World Appearance: The Inner World of Akane is one that would be beautiful, if not for the mass of black, glistening oil covering absolutely everything like a nightmare. Beneath this ever seeping material that is always making disturbing sucking sounds lies an elegant and neat ornamental garden, rock garden, fish pond, and all. If it was not for the oily coating, this Inner World would be one of colour and delight, however, it shows nothing more than shapes in black and grey.

Shikai Passive Ability:
Akane is capable of mnipulating the molecular particles of her blade after it 'dissipates' into the air around her. She can form it into any shape she so pleases and move these objects however she wants to.

Clone
Here Akane is capable of forming a maximum of four clones of herself who are perfectly identical to her in every way, bar their combat abilities, which are always one rank below the real Akane's. Akane generally likes to use this release on a daily basis, using it to 'scout' out territories, as if these clones 'release' themselves, the information they gather goes straight back to the original Akane. Upon defeat, these clones can take anywhere from a blink of an eye to a few minutes to disappear in a puff of pink smoke. This is a rather random effect.
Cool down time 5 posts for each separate clone.
Bounding Chains
This attack focuses on Akane creating a mass of one hundred chains all connected to, or coming out of her own body. These writhe and move like her own appendages and she is capable of reaching grabbing a radius of 15 meters. Looking nothing so much as Medusa herself in this form, Akane can use these chains to bind, hold, lift, or even shock those within the grasp of her chains. These chains may be cut with shikai or with kidou 20 or above. Each chain has a one post regeneration period.
Invisible Shield
Using her mist, Akane is capable of creating a large shield (large enough to protect herself as well as three others) by making this mist condensate before her in the face of an attack. The shield may protect up to bankai attacks, and kidou 75, after which it's defensive power greatly lessens. It does not work against the arrancar cero. Cool down time of 1 post.
Bankai Release Phrase: Unari Ankoku (Roaring Darkness)

The amorphous substance in the air from her last release now settles and covers the surface of her body like a faceless catsuit, becoming almost a shadow herself. She is incapable of talking in this form, using signals if she must.

The blue-grey mist swirls and turns black like oil around Akane and melds into one form on/with her.
Bankai Passive Ability: Akane's ability revolves around the control and transformation of the amorphous substance which covers the surface of her body like a faceless catsuit, becoming almost a shadow herself. This substance can take various shapes and forms as long as it remains attacked to her body. The also includes the ability to take large hits, increased defensive capabilities. However, the drawback is that while she can take massive blows head on and bounce back, apparently unharmed, once she comes out of her bankai release these damages add up, indeed the fact that she carried on despite the injuries adds up, too.
Bankai Attacks:
Aoi Hi (Blue Sun)
By infusing her energy into the substance she is able to temporarily ionize the liquid to the point of expelling the energy in a concentrated blast of energy similar to a Arrancars Cero. She predominately uses it to make ballistic projectiles to blast her opponents with.
However is only able to blast a total limit of 3 blasts (per post) of the ionized blast at a time before she needs a cool down time of 2 posts, each. She is also only able to utilize one projectile weapon.
Atarashi Asa (New Morning)
Attack sees Akane using the black material engulfing her to form two black petal-like formations around her hands, enlarging the diameter of her palms. Clapping these onto the ground before her, Akane is able to concentrate seriously large amounts of blue, crackling energy into the ground to rise up around any target up to a distance of 50 meters from her, creating walls of sheet-lightning, shock anyone in that area.
The firepower of this may be compared with that of an arrancar cero, but is spread over a greater area. There is no upper limit upon the area, however the amount of power put in remains the same, hence the larger the area, the less damage those in it sustain.
She can easily kill one person with it by frying them to a crisp, or shock an army of 1000 into a 5 second (1 post) lapse of movement.
