Ed Triggs grew up often dubbed as a shy, introverted child, although nowadays he finds himself disliking the label. Sure, the boy didn't enjoy talking much and he wasn't often found dealing with other kids, but it was really out of choice, he would preach, rather than him being afraid of contact. His father had often told him time and time again that people were stupid, slow, and didn't know left from right, so, of course, a young Ed didn't find any reason why he should waste his time with such silly people when he could be learning stuff! He didn't want to end up being viewed the same as his father viewed most of everyone, after all, so the boy was driven to become as smart as could be, even if his mother had assured him more than enough times that she would love him no matter what. ..Though, Ed knew that pretty well – it was dad he was uncertain on.

But, as time went on, he became more and more aware that gaining his father's attention wasn't a good thing in the least and he learned to simply give up around the man. He never asked anything more than once and, when he became seven or so, he learned to simply not ask altogether. His mother wasn't there to protect him anymore, after all, as she had left somewhere that Kip never did explain to him. No, Ed's attention had turned onto his younger sister, Vi, whom he spent most of his childhood raising from infancy to the little girl she was now.

Outside of that, Ed continued to go to school and be a good child, studying whenever he didn't understand anything and excelling in mathematics with ease, although his literature left some to be desired. Thankfully, the teacher didn't seem to mind much that Ed was so blunt with anything fictional and shrugged it off – at least he was doing the work to the best of his abilities. Ed, who at first spent most of his time going to and from school as watching Vi was a fulltime job with Kip's neglect, found himself with more time on his hands. Going home wasn't very appealing when it was just him and his father, so he instead went off to the library to spend his time reading nonfiction and studying whatever was on the next test. Here he met Morgan, who really is the closest he would have had to a friend, outside of Rune who came over plenty of times to play poker, but the girl wasn't so much of a friend as she was work. Kip tended to take over whenever she entered the household, leaving Ed back in his room to read textbooks to Vi. In any case, Morgan didn't became very defensive with Ed's know-it-all behavior and, even if he was, they spent the majority of their time together in silence anyway. Quentin, on the other hand, who also shared their seating arrangement at the library, was less of a friend and more of just scenery than anything. ..Really, none of them were very much friends, but it was the closest Ed had at the moment and the best sort of relationship he could hope for.

When Ed graduated from school, he was expected to move on to university considering his interest in learning, but.. Ed didn't feel any reason to apply for anything. Firstly, he didn't have any specific degree he felt like specializing in and he was firm in believing he needed a goal before he did any such action. Secondly, he didn't like the idea of moving. He already knew most of everything about the island – why should he go somewhere he didn't know anything about? He liked to learn, true, but he liked knowing even more and it was just stupid to him to think it was a good idea to ever leave. So, he got a job as a roustabout at the local circus considering his fondness of the elephants there and went on to living in Nirvani Island with his sister and father.

But, as one so fond of knowledge, Ed grew bored and frustrated by the circus and its antics, opting to take up the newly opened position of librarian at the place he had spent practically all of his free time anyway. Outside of that, not much changed for the boy – his father passed away, but he was already emotionally removed from the man anyway, and Vi became more of a handful than he could hope to manage. But he did his best regardless and allowed her to live with him, taking care of her even though, really, she was making much more money than he was. Still, Vi didn't know how to manage it, so he was still essentially the head of the home.

While her older brother, Ed, had been exposed to some rather dramatic events in his short life, Vi, fortunately, hadn't. The girl was far too young to remember where they used to live, what her mother even looked like, and why Ed was so quiet whenever she asked him questions on it – the answers were beyond her as her entire world and memories consisted solely of the two older males. Ed and Kip Triggs had been her entire life and, put simply, that is all she ever knew. Even when she went out to occasionally play with other children or greet teachers and classmates at school when she begun classes, she always returned home to her brother and father's side out of loyalty and curiosity. She would spend her time watching and listening to the two, wondering why her brother would act afraid and nervous around her father and, more importantly, why her father never would look at her the same way Ed did.

Now, it wasn't to say that Vi was particularly deprived - she had clothes everytime she needed them, toys, a pretty room that she kept nice and clean, and was given everything the average child needed and was expected to have. But, these facts only made her more and more confused as to why the atmosphere at home always seemed to be so strained amongst them all. She could have been satisfied with knowing Ed and her relationship was good, but it bothered the young girl to know that half of her world didn't seem to want anything to do with her and her sibling. Every method that a ten year old could possibly know had been tried, resulting in only her brother to give her praise for it. It almost annoyed her, but, with her sibling's consolation, Vi had managed to stay out of trouble. For a few years, at least.

When Vi started to hit fifteen or so, she began acting out to try to garner her father's attention, but the indifference from the man stuck regardless of how much hassle she tried to give him. He simply didn't care and, when she really started to get argumentative, he simply kicked her out of the home. Ed left with her and helped support her during her school years, though her grades were pretty much in the toilet by that point. Vi ended up dropping out and lounging around, being a general brat to anyone who came near or unnecessarily clingy. It only got worse when her father passed away, any chance she saw at having a relationship with him disappearing along with the man, to where even Ed had trouble keeping her around without losing his temper. She still lives with him and, after one particular blow out with her brother, ended up getting a job at the strip joint.
