Quiet.
So very quiet.
Except for the wind. Which had become as familiar as a companion to Laini as any being could be. It had moods and seemed to have feelings as well.
It would blow dust into her face before slacking off as if it had never existed; it would roar across the desert plain like a beast, angry and hungry. But at times it even seemed pleasant, even comforting, pushing the heat away from her with a calm breeze, free of grit and grain.
It was a friend and foe.
Since entering the desert, and leaving behind the cool shade, the Alkidike/Shifter mix had learned slowly how to survive. She had brought enough water to sustain herself for a short distance, but she knew it would last her only so long. From there, she was uncertain of where she would go. She honestly hoped to run into one of the human tribes that she knew roamed these hot sands. They knew more about this place than she ever could.
Wiping her face of dirt, the girl continued forward, the heat sweltering on her skin.
