Welcome to the African Safari Clutch Hatching!! All was calm in Ista Weyr that day. The afternoon slowly crept by without a peep. Adult dragons lounged on the beach, enjoying the sun while the Weyrfolk busied themselves with the tasks of the day. Some of the younger ones managing to escape their chores to pursue the firelizards that dipped and dived through the air above the Weyr. Curled around her clutch Calith sighed with contentment, perched on the ledges around her were other dragons, she did not mind their presence. It was usual for dragons to gravitate toward the clutch with its hatching so close. The eggs however were apparently taking their time, waiting nearly two whole sevendays since the candidates had visited them. It appeared though that two sevendays was long enough. Raising her head Calith looked at the eggs carefully. Something had caught the female’s attention as deep jeweled eyes roamed over the cluster of shells. The gold rumbled softly as she saw the patchwork egg lurch to the side yet again, the egg ceased its motion and Calith could hear an insistent peeping coming from within the brown shell. Knowing that now was the time, the dragon took up her hum. A sound quickly echoed by those in her company until the hatching cavern was alive with the dragon’s song of new life arriving. The song moved out of the cavern and spread through the Weyr, weaving itself around the people and taken up by every dragon of every colour as all were brought together to welcome the newest members of their family. -------------------------------- This is it everyone, the eggs are done waiting and ready to meet your candidates. So let's have a quick run down so we can get this show on the road
* It is currently mid afternoon, so candidates are likely doing chores. Hopefully the dragons are enough to warn them.
* As is the norm, the candidates will be wearing the tradition white robes for the hatching.
* Weyrlings, riders, weyrfolk and everyone else are welcome to attend, just please stay in the stands this time.
* If you have a candidate that is not signed up they are still able to be on the sands, but they will not impress.
* Feel free to PM The_Muffin_Puppy if you really don't want your candidate hurt, as in not even bumped into.
* If you want them to get hurt, feel free to put them in certain baby dragons way. You'll know which ones.
* As usual don't god-mode, power-play, have you character be a psychic, etc.
Lastly, have fun and we hope you enjoy the hatching as much as we did writing it.

Kieza was busy about her chores, her hands wrapped around the handle of the bucket she was using to transport water to the cooks. But when the sound of the humming began to reverberate through the walls, she nearly dropped the bucket, instead sloshed the water over the front of her clothing and upon her feet. She scoffed, watching the water soak into the earth and leave a dark brown spot where it had been. Clumsy.
She shook her head and set the bucket down, reminding herself where it was. Then she turned and ran from the well, racing back toward the sleeping chamber she shared with other candidates like herself.
She slipped from her clothes and scrubbed at her feet with the wet clothing, cleansing herself. Then gingerly she donned the white robe that was her customary dress for Touching and Hatching. She felt her heart beating like a drum within her chest, her hands shaking as she laced it tight. She breathed softly, trying to relax and she ambled from the room, trying hard not to run. She had to remember to be respectful!
Soon enough, she reached where the other Candidates were gathered. Looking up, she felt her heartbeat begin to hammer once more. There were dragons everywhere, humming and singing. She wished she could understand what they were saying. But she guessed it was their greeting of the little ones to the world.

Alara
Alara had been down in the creche, making silly noises at one of the newly weaned babies that she was changing when the hum of the dragons began to echo throughout the Weyr. She quickly finished up then gave a nod to the head creche worker before scurrying away to her room to change. It seemed like some of the workers were going to have a heavier workload than normal this afternoon since most people would be off to the sands or stands but infants still needed attention. It was a little unfortunate but then again everyone at the Weyr had seen at least one hatching in their lifetime and she'd never heard any of the creche workers complain.
Upon reaching her room she quickly stripped out of her everyday outfit and began to slip into her white candidate robes. There would be time to neatly pile discarded clothing later, at the moment Alara was more concerned with not being late. Water was splashed onto a brush which she quickly dragged through her light brown curls in an effort to make her hair look somewhat acceptable. Once that was done Alara did a quick mental checklist then began to make her way as fast as was safely possible towards the entrance to the sands. along the way she spotted some of her fellow candidates and weyrbrats and she nodded at or smiled to those she knew. Evzen was missing for the moment but she was sure he'd be along shortly.
As Alara made her way out onto the too warm for comfort sands she paused to bow to Calith and the Weyrwoman before scurrying over to stands beside the other female candidates. She wondered if her guess from earlier would be correct and the lilac breasted roller egg would be the first to hatch.

Evzen
The dragons had started their humming just as Evzen had been entering the infirmary with basket containing a warm sun-dried load of sheets. The basket had been snatched from his hand and the young weyrbrat shooed off to change before he could even explain that there were still supposed to be two more baskets full of sheets coming. A chore he or someone else would need to get back to once the hatching was done.
Squirming his way through the crowded halls he made it to where the candidates were lodged and swiftly proceed to change into his white robes. Evzen had never been so nervous in his short life. He had eventually calmed down during the touching but now as the feeling of the dragons humming washed over him it set off the excited yet scared queasy feeling in his stomach again. This was his first time standing, his first time being out on the sands instead of just watching from the stands.
Fortunately he soon spotted Alara over with the other girls and it helped to calm him. Even if Evzen still disliked her greedy nature her calmness and semi distant presence was enough to ground the young boy a little as he walked out onto the sands, paid his respects and then joined the many other hopeful male candidates. Still a bit anxious Evzen could not help picking at stray strings on the cuffs of his robes.

Mairin
Mairin practically cheered when it became apparent that it was time for the eggs to hatch. Normally she didn't like leaving a job half done but she'd happily left the dishes she was washing sink to the bottom of the wash pot as she darted away down the halls to change. today was going to be great even if she didn't find a dragon out on the sands. The feeling of the adult dragons hum reverberated in the air and made her shiver with excitement. Soon there would be little dragons stumbling about the sands causing all sorts of hopefully mostly happy chaos. Sure some people were going to be disappointed when it was all over but that didn't matter right now.
As she struggled her way into her robe all Mairin could think about was the upcoming moments of tension as each egg would crack and dozens of candidates would be up on their tip toes trying to get a glimpse of the dragonets or make themselves seem more appealing. Plus there was that queen egg, the whole weyr was going to be abuzz with excitement when it hatched. Mairin was positive she'd get her fill of thrills today regardless of if her place within the weyr and the world of Pern as a whole changed by the end of it.
Today was all about dragons and the Weyr but for a moment Mairin longed for the sea and nice cool breeze as she stepped out onto the sands. They seemed even warmer than before and she was not a hundred percent thrilled by that. Still it did little to dull the young woman's excitement as she joined the other girls and woman on one side of the sands. Looking over at the male's side she tried to spot Hennory, one of the guys she'd gotten to know a bit recently.

After one of Jakkin's friends' disappearances after Threadfall, he hadn't thought he would be up to standing. They should have been sharing this moment together. The fourteen turn old boy had been hesitant to pull his candidate robes on after stories of maulings from the Weyrlingmaster; he'd been one of the less-fortunate candidates recruited to help set up an obstacle course for one of the lessons. During set up, he had been treated to a cheerful rendition of 'Fifty ways you can lose an eye on the hatching grounds'. He had then been assured that losing an eye was unlikely and he was more likely to be sat on.
At least he'd survive being sat on, as long as it was a green or blue that did so, the boy figured. He'd been working on peeling tubers in the kitchen with a few of his fellow candidates, and so when he humming began, followed them to the hatching grounds. He positioned himself next to Evzen, flashing the boy a hesitant smile. "Nervous too?" he whispered, "Don't let the dragons know! I've heard they sit on people. Don't think anyone's died in turns, though. I wasn't here for the last hatching, were you?"

Ameleia was doing one of the more boring chores out there, one that she had learned was the sort of the job that, the moment it was done, it had to be redone. That job was sweeping. It seemed as though there were always people tromping by as she went about the task, their boots tracking in more dirt from the treks outside. She gave pause in the middle of a sweeping motion, her grip tightening on the broom, as she heard the humming of the dragons growing louder and louder, "Wow." She breathed, looking around for a moment before she leaned her broom against the nearest wall, abandoning it there so that she could make the run for where the other Candidates would be getting ready.
She needed to changed she realized as she came to a slidding halt where the others were gathered. She didn't bother to hesitate as she pulled off what she was wearing, tossing it into a heap so that she could pull on the tradition white that everyone wore onto the sands, and was quick to braid back her mass of blond hair as she went, moving to where the others were standing, her heart already beating like mad and nothing had even happened yet, the eggs still all standing in a similar spot to where they had been the last time they visited. Her eyes flickered between the ones that she had been able to greet during the egg touch two sevenday ago.
She couldn't wait to see what was within all of the various, pretty colored eggs eggs, wanting to meet with them all, "This is so exciting." She said in a breathless tone as she looked out over the other Candidates that were gathered.

Evzen
" I was in the stands." Evzen whispered back in reply. "Nobody died but some people got hurt and one of the dragons was really aggressive." Maulings happened, it was something every candidate accepted and that every weyrbrat had seen in some capacity or another. Still Evzen preferred when things went smoothly and the worst thing that happened was a few scratches or being being knocked over by dragonets eager to get to theirs.
"I think sitting wound be okay, except sometimes you get really pudgy ones, I don;t even know how they get fat in an egg." Evzen giggled a little then, continuing to settle just a bit despite memories of the past hatching. The idea of a fat little brown dragonet parking itself on his feet or knocking him over and flopping on his legs was sort of amusing. you might get a little squished but that was easy to recover from.

Tacelon
Tacelon was sweeping one of the halls when his flit, Descant, sat up and cocked his head. The little blue had been curled on the boy's shoulders, apparently dozing as the boy worked, but something seemed to have caught his attention. He seemed to listen for a moment, then began to hum. Not one of the many songs that the Harper boy had taught his flit; this tune was simpler, but seemed to resonate. It took Tacelon a moment to realize that it wasn't his flit that was making the air seem to vibrate, but the voices of dragons, all humming the same thing. And that could only mean one thing. The eggs were hatching!
Time to drop everything he was doing and get ready, then. He leaned his broom on the wall - no need to worry about leaving it untidy, anyone who was supervising him would understand - and rushed to the Candidate quarters. Descant clung to the fabric of his shirt and interrupted his humming to voice excited cheeps, voicing the excitement Tacelon had immediately felt when he realized what was happening.
Yet by the time the boy had gotten to his bunk and was pulling off his normal clothes, his mood had dulled. Yes, there would be dragons hatching, and Candidates Impressing. But not him, he was sure. No dragon had wanted him last time, and there was no reason any would want him now. Why should they? He could hope he wouldn't be injured, perhaps. Maybe he'd stay in the back, where he could see what happened but would be farther from any hatchlings with careless claws. Descant had resumed humming, but as he caught his bonded's mood, his tone grew lower and off-key, a sour counterpoint to the more expectant sound voiced by the rest of the weyr.
Still, Tacelon was a Candidate and he would stand. He pulled on the traditional robe and sandals, then made his way to the Hatching Grounds. Descent tried to perch on the boy's shoulder to come with him, but was firmly stopped. Tacelon paused walking long enough to sternly whistle to his flit to Stay Away, firmly picturing the blue perched high above the stands, perched above the humans and dragons who were watching. Flits were not allowed on the Sands. Reluctantly the blue cheeped his acknowledgement and flew off to find a perch, leaving his bonded to continue on.
Tacelon stepped onto the sands and made his way to the other Candidates, an edge of nervousness creeping into his mood. Would there be much violence this time? He'd hate to see more people hurt, and he'd hate even more if it was him hurt. Seeing baby dragons this close was a little nice, but for every one that was playful and friendly, there always seemed to be one that was grouchy or angry. He'd have to watch carefully and try to move away. He took his place in the line, shifting his feet on the hot sands as he waited for the eggs to start hatching.

Lysandor
Perhaps he was a bit on the oblivious side, perhaps he had been too intent with his chores to really notice the sudden explosion of energy around the weyr, even as candidates rushed past white robes hurriedly put on Lysandor seemed to too focused on his task to pay much notice even riders were all rushing about and still the teenager almost man failed to comprehend what was happening. How foolish he would feel when he arrived red in the face from running.
It was the dragons that really alerted him of the hatching, how could he not noticed the dragons after all? Still rather in awe of the creatures since his arrival last year he watched them with hopes that had yet to be fulfilled, true his last impressing had not gone well, but there were always more candidates than dragons... he had to remind himself that not everyone impressed their first year, in fact most candidates didn't impress their first year it was a small comfort in his disappointment.
Rushing he had dropped what he was doing, rushing back to his quarters to fish out the white robes that had...some how gotten a bit short on him in the last year. Apparently he had grown a little since the last he had put them on and he could only hope that the dragons wouldn't be offended by the sight of his ankles. Making his way to the hatching sands he looked about as he entered at the various other candidates he had...never really gotten to know. Looking around at the various eggs he felt his heart hammering in his chest.
Would this year be the year?
Taking a deep breath he tried to focus, attempted not to worry after all a dragon would be connecting with his mind and he....he didn't want them to think he was a worry wort. Glancing at everyone around he suddenly felt embarrassed with his presentation. Perhaps he should of checked to make sure that robes had fit prior to this point and time, of course it was too late now to lament about such things.

Ashlyn
Ashlyn was in the infirmary, urging one of the patients to drink her medicine, reminding her she needed to get better. The woman had fixed her eyes on the young woman, fussing about how it tasted disgusting and she didn't want to drink it. Ashlyn told the woman that she understood, but that she needed to do it for those she loved. The woman nodded, taking the stuff and drinking it, a smile on Ashlyn's lips as she thanked the woman. Just as she was about to check on one of the other patients, she heard a humming that seemed to be filling the air. She knew from the previous turns that this was from the dragons...announcing new life. The woman in the bed told her to go and wished her luck, telling her to believe in herself. Ashlyn nodded and mouthed a thank you to the woman, before rushing out.
Ashlyn got to the place where the candidates stayed and went to where her stuff was. She got her robes from where she had neatly laid them, before changing from the dress she had been wearing into those white robes. Then she got out her brush and quickly fixed her hair, letting it stay down this time, so she looked presentable. Once she was ready, she headed out to the sands where everyone would be gathering. She showed her respect for Calith and their Weyrwoman, before joining the other female candidates. The warm sand felt good to her, knowing it meant that the eggs would hatch in a place they loved.
She folded her hands in front of her, looking over to where the eggs were, the same ones she had seen not long ago. She held her breath, wondering if she might actually get lucky this year. She had been coming to these since she was of age and had not been fortunate with a hatching yet. She felt her stomach have butterflies, her head full of doubts of getting a dragon this turn. Oh how she hoped she was wrong, but she would just have to wait and see. She recalled her mother's words to her just this morning about how the whole family was rooting for her, but to remember, no matter what, she was loved. She smiled at that thought and nodded softly to herself, knowing she would just love this...no matter what.

Mei (With interaction toward Mairin)
She hadn't thought she'd become one of the silly sun worshippers of the Weyr, but when a particular friendly bronze needed so much washing, and a particular friendly bronze rider asked for her help, Mei found herself getting enough sun in the following weeks to tint her skin closer to what it had been when she used to work the fields in her earlier years. Today was no different, waist deep in water and scrubbing the side of Zelith's hide, one of the only dragons that didn't make her shake in her boots. It was that trust over the past few seven days that kept her from throwing herself back in fear when the mighty beast began his heady hatching hum.
But now she was running, her bare feet pounding the stone beneath her. She wasn't the only one, the flurry of candidates around her an afterthought as she ran to the beat of her own heart, which rushed blood so loudly through her ears. That was what she heard, but the hum could be felt filling her mind and body so fully that the terror that threatened at the bottom of her stomach could merely simmer uncomfortably in undercurrent. Her clothes were off and on the floor of her dormitory, curses flying from her mouth as the white fabric of the candidate's robes clung obstinately to her flesh as she tried to tug it down. The sandals assigned to her were uncomfortable, and caused her to stumble more than once as she was swept into the hallway, shoulder to shoulder with other excited young men and women until they all but spilled out onto the hatching sands.
She grimaced when her foot stubbed into the hot sands, spilling the grit into her sandals. She hopped somewhat awkwardly as she followed the rest of the girls, kicking out the grit from between her toes as she came to stand beside one of the other female candidates, Mairin, if she remembered the name, right. She gave the girl a cursory nod of acknowledgement before her gaze drifted towards the humming golden queen. The regal creature was just as imposing as the last time she'd seen her, but now there was a crackle of anticipation in the air, joy even that made the situation feel much less onerous than she'd anticipated.
Actually, she was feeling rather excited, the feelings of fear all but forgotten as the rocking of eggs caused her to transfix upon them. If only her parents could see her-- wait, were they here? Mei's gaze drifted up towards the stands, eagerly trying to find the familiar faces of her family. She hoped they were there; hoped she could make them proud.

Hennory(with interaction toward Mairin)
He'd thought the sands out on the beach had been warm, but the scorching sensation beneath his feet as he walked upon the sands quickly reminded him that there was little comparison. The lad was hastily donned in his candidate's robes, the fabric clinging to his body from sweat and the slick salve the healer had given him for protection against the sun; red headedness and sensitivity to burning seemed to go hand in hand for many, and Hennory was not immune. His chores of washing dusty rugs had been cut short by the dragon's hum.
Some candidates looked anxious, but Hennory found himself feeling a strange calm, perhaps an affect of the deep dragon's hum that made his head feel buzzing and warm. He now stood with the other male candidates, brow arching momentarily as he reflected on the interesting nature of separating the sexes. Did it really do much good, or was it some sort to old tradition still honored for the very sake of honoring it? Absently the young man shifted from foot to foot, attempting to alleviate the burning sensation on his soles. Sandals made for poor protection against the heated sands, but Hennory mused that it was somehow part of the rite of being in the position he currently was.
His eyes drifted to the line of girls, spotting Mei. The heat of the sands was making her curly hair dry and crackle hilariously around her head, causing a smile to form on his mouth. Her eyes were in the direction of the stands, eyes hopeful and searching. It was an easy guess that she was looking for a family member. He'd seen so little of her lately, what with her being around that bronze rider so often. Someone had even mentioned to him that Hennory had seemed a little…
Jealous.
He blinked rapidly when he realized another's eyes were seeking him out, managing a somewhat bashful smile as he waved at Mairin. He might not have even noticed her looking his way if she'd not been standing next to Mei. That notion in and of itself was somewhat embarrassing. Still, he managed to recover, mouthing a silent good luck to the seacrafter-turned-candidate.

Fitcher
As with all the others Fitcher was marched into the cavern at the beck and call of the Weyr's newest batch of mouths to feed. Unlike the others though there was no eager excitement. Just apprehension. This was merely an inconvenience after all. The only thing he had to do was to stand there and not get picked out by any of the dragons wandering the sands. Sounded easy enough, they were baby dragons, couldn't be too hard to miss. He just needed to make it through this one event and he'd be able to continue with his plans and be home soon enough. Hopefully before another dragon could decide that she felt like keeping him here longer for the 'honour' that was the chance to stand before her eggs. That was obviously leaving out the mauling and death that was also a risk.
He shuffled uncomfortably in the thin sandals he was being forced to wear, what was the point in these anyway? He might as well be barefoot. If the whole idea was they had to pay to be worthy of impressing, he liked to think that the little creatures with teeth and claws would be able to decide that for themselves. After all wasn't this whole thing supposed to be them making their choices or something? He'd rather they had let him stay in the boots he had been wearing before. At least then he wouldn't be awkwardly shifting from foot to foot as he stood in a group of expectant boys.
He would much rather be back mucking out the herdbeast pens. It had been only a short while ago that picking up the animals leavings had been his only task for the day. Not anymore though. Were it not for the fact that the dragons all felt the need to make the event so loudly obvious then he could have hidden there and pretended to have accidently missed it. No such luck there though. Seemed he never got much luck while at the Weyr. Still hopefully it would all be over soon.
