PROMPT ONE - THE STARTING HORN
Early morning, the first day of the race. Hundreds of runners mill about the staging area, getting their numbers, consulting maps of the course, and chatting each other up. As a reference to the namesake of the marathon, participants have been divided into districts based off their racing demographic [age, casual or full race, etc]. Some will run the entire course, others a simplified route, and for the children, one without any obstacles whatsoever.
You, of course, will be running the entire thing.
The call goes out for runners to line up, and as you do, you can see something in the distance - piles of gear! The rules of the race forbid you to bring any of your own, and in fact, everyone wears the same exact tank top and shorts [in varying colors]. It will be up to you which pile you run to, and which object you attempt to take with you on your run, but, fair warning! There are not enough of each item for everyone. You will have to be either very fast to get the most popular options, or very calculating, to get another.
There is a large pile of water + energy bar packs, followed by increasingly smaller piles of space blankets, bandages, and finally, bungee cords.
Which do you attempt to get?
[a] water + energy bar pack space blanket [c] bandages [d] bungee cord
[Instructions: Please do not write in your character actually obtaining any of the above items, you will find out in the next prompt if you are successful. Please post your option in bold, red font somewhere above or below your narrative response. Please include your character's NAME in your narrative, so we know who they are.]

Today was the day. Today was the day that Madeyln Caspian would prove to her sister and her friends that she could be something more, someone athletic and someone who could fend for herself if they time came. For too long has Gwen been mocking and teasing her, making not-so-subtle jabs at the little bit of flab on her belly (in which Madelyn would fire back with the little stubbles she called 'breasts' on her sister's tiny frame). For too long her friends mistook her for a dainty little flower that couldn't stand to get her hands dirty, just because she tended to her appearance over taking to the gym every single day.
Madelyn may not have been an olympian, but she felt that she was a healthy, capable young lady in her own right. After tending to Gwen's basic cares and needs (and then some), Madelyn was going to prove to everyone what she already knew to be true. That she was strong, dependable, and able to hold her own when things got gritty.
And this would be the day she'd prove her worth to Gwen! Not to mention the thought of the prize money going to help her mother with the incoming medical expenses as well as getting started on hoarding away diapers and then some.
"You got this, Maddy," Madelyn told herself, stretching her muscles and getting ready for the starting horn. When the decision was laid before her, she immediately looked towards the bungee cords, looking around the area and trying to decide the best route to grab them. She suspected they'd be pretty useful in the events to come, and as much as she wanted to think she was the only genius to think of this, she was sure that others would think the same. Which meant she had competition... which mean she might have to resort to stepping on people's toes. 'I could pretend to go for bandages... but that would waste time. I'll just go straight for the bungee cords and give a little nudge. It's all just a friendly competition, right?"
One that she might take too seriously, but she had no time to think of that now. The starting horn was blown and Madelyn took off like a bat out of hell, going straight for the bungee cords. Just pretend it's Black Friday!

space blanket
What on earth would he need a bungie cord for? The water and energy bars made sense, and so did the bandages. He could almost see the reasoning for the blanket as well, but it was the bungie cords that made him pause. Did they know somehting he didn't? Well, obviously yes, but that wasn't the point.
Should he go for the bungie cords?
He was thinking no, that he should just go for the water bottle and energy bars, but while he was thinging, the horn blew, and his body darted over towards the Space Blanket pile instead. He knew that there would likely be ways to acquire energy bars and water later, he was sure, and these could possibly serve multiple purposes.
He moved through the crowd carefully, slipping through the crowd to reach the pile. He thought at one point that he had kicked one of the water energy bar packs with his foot, in the direction of the pile that he was heading to, but until he managed to get what he was going for, he wasn't about to look. He had to focus!
Maybe if there were any left, he'd be able to snag one of those too.
There was an advantage to being smaller, and he slid through a pair of competitors to get closer to the pile. He was close now, and he dove at the pile, his body poised to roll the moment he grabbed one of the blankets.

Delilah reached up behind her, twisting her hair into a ponytail with a pale pink scrunchie. She was excited, for certain. Ever since she first heard about a Hunger Games-themed marathon, she had ramped up her usual exercise regimen, focusing on cardio and endurance to get herself prepared.
She was feeling good and ready, and to top it off, she was feeling gorgeous. It was hard to feel pretty in basic race-wear, but damn it, Lila was convinced she made it look great.
She walked up to the piles of supplies, pondering. Well, there was really only one rational choice; if this was really like the Hunger Games, she'd have to conserve food as much as possible. So Delilah went straight for the energy bars and water.

Right, he had signed himself up for this marathon and had somehow managed to show up on time. That was a miracle for Ianto Yates. There had been a certain amount of sizing up the competition, perhaps not entirely for sizing up reasons, as Ianto stretched before the start of the marathon. It was always a good thing to stretch, to make sure that your muscles wouldn't cramp in the middle of running just because you forgot to do such a thing. There currently weren't buildings or anything of the sort to run or climb, but Ianto could do a normal jog and run sort of deal, as long as he didn't get bored.
He had been supplied with a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. Ianto had donned them with no comment and was now standing at the start of the marathon continuing to look around. Then they were off. One foot in front of the other, the dark haired young man tried to remember that it was a marathon, that the fastest runner didn't always win, but then his deep blue gaze landed on the pile of goodies and all bets were off. He kicked it up to eleven a notch and ran for the items, quickly assessing the various things in front of him and attempting to snatch [a] water + energy bar pack because that seemed to be the most helpful thing there. What the hell was anyone supposed to do with space blanket anyway?

Akito was always one to try something new and this was something new, he'd never run a marathon before, and so when he'd heard about this marathon he couldn't turn it up; especially with the theme being what it was. He was excited, and almost bouncing on his feet, when he arrived all decked out in the darkly colored shorts and tank top he'd been given for this race. His number tags in place he heard people being called to the line and made his way that way. This was going to be fun! He'd never run a marathon before but this one, due to it's theme, had caught his attention and his curiosity. He had actually turned down an offer to go out with his friends today, this was just more attention grabbing and worthy of his attention.
At the front of the line, stretching, he looked out over the packs while going over what to get. Maybe food and water...it seemed like the best idea. Why a bungee cord would be needed he didn't know, couldn't think of a reason.
As the signal went off he took off toward the packs. He needed something, but what? The blanket also was a good idea he supposed. The thoughts though were dashed from his mind as he finally reached them and scooped up the first pack he came across and took off.

Dennis Terry was what one might call 'out doorsy'. He liked to be active and eager to meet the day. He got up early and went to bed late, wasting as little time as he could possibly get away with to sleeping. At least to remain among the living and functioning.
He was more than ready for this little excursion. As always, he wanted to win. Everything he did in life, he wanted to win, even when it was not exactly a competition. It didn't matter: he went for everything with the same gusto if he wanted it and felt it would make his life better.
Or if it just seemed like a kick in the pants at the time.
He made his way forward with the rest of the pack, not too shy about shoving and tripping. These kind of tactics were not beneath him, and just made things more daring and interesting. People should not get in his way, if they didn't want to get run over. He aimed for whatever was closest, only wanting to grab something for the sake of taking it from someone else, confident enough in his condition and intelligence that he could make use of anything. Or so he had told himself, as he always did.

The money, the glory, blah blah blah. Not why Leo had entered this marathon. He wanted the bragging rights, that’s what he wanted. Well, and to be surrounded by a lot of fit people, maybe see them dirtied up – mm – and maybe get some phone numbers. Of course, since he had gone through the trouble of entering and training and wearing these unflattering shorts, he planned to win too.
Lined up at the starting line, Leo eyed the supplies speculatively. He wrote off the bandages and bungee cord immediately – the hell did he need a bungee cord for? – and was left with the food and blankets. Much though he disliked the taste of most energy bars, that and the water had obvious uses. The blanket, it had uses, but- well, actually, the more Leo considered it, the more he wanted a blanket. He could probably, ah, obtain water or food later.
When the horn sounded, Leo dashed for the blankets, pretending the mob was a moshpit, using an arm the move people aside or weave his way though them.

Kor was utterly excited. He loved running. He had a good history of it before he lived here. He kept in shape this way as well. Looking around at all the people, the pierced man felt a little out of place. After all, he looked like he was the only one with metal, the only one with tattoos. He didn't really recognize anyone, either.
Oh, well. His hands moved to start taking out all of his face metal. If it was physical, these things would just make for easy targets. They would catch in the sun, give away his position or whatever happened during this Hunger Games. He had just finished taking out all the metal, leaving in the gauges, when they were told to line up. He felt kind of naked without the metal. Ah, well. It was for the better. He put them all in his baggy in his pocket he kept with him in case he ever had to take them out while in public.
Then the horn sounded. Without even thinking much about it, Kor went for the biggest stack. Water would be useful, energy bars as well. Something like a blanket would add extra weight and slow him down. He couldn't even begin to think of what the bungee cord was for.

Elalinde projected almost total serenity as she surveyed her competition in their cute little running outfits. She spared an admiring glance at her own blue-green ensemble. Her one regret was that other than her own crazy and colorful hair accessories and her lucky purple mustache necklace, she couldn't alter her outfit to give it that Hunger Games flare. Ah well. She gave the crowd another quick glance, mentally ticking off where her own "district" peeps were before listening to the announcer's orders to line up.
Obeying dutifully (for once), she took her place and was pleased to see the piles of equipment not too far off. Turning her thoughts from the people around her, she squinted as she considered her choices. To her mind, the pile of water was the obvious choice. Maybe too obvious since the city wouldn't allow the folks sponsoring the race to deny anyone water. Too much potential for lawsuits. Besides, she'd made herself drink before showing up, so she was still reasonably hydrated. Bandages? Nope, not those either. If she needed to bandage something, that's what her shirt was for. So that left... what? Bungee cords or a space blanket.
Frowning in concentration, she considered each. Bungee cords could be useful. But if she needed a rope, she could always twist the blanket up. And same if she needed to carry anything. The blanket could be used to carry things. The more she thought, the clearer the choice became in her mind.
Grinning, she altered her position slightly so she could dart to the blankets are fast as possible. When in doubt, she thought, always go for the multi-tasker.
