Doyle was wandering about Katrina thinking about nothing in particular. He ended up walking towards the market area and passed by several shops. He didn't pay them much mind but if the stores had items outside to help draw in customers he easily pocketed a few items here and there. As he did this he couldn't help but think back to the time in Ecruteak City when he was visiting his family during his journey in Unova.

~~~~~
It was a mild day out and the city had taken advantage. People were out and about and many shops had set up outdoor stalls to help draw in the many people. Doyle was only 15 at the time and already had a bad rap with the stores in town. They all kept a close eye on him as he walked by but with so many people wandering around it was easy for him to slip some things into his pouches. However he had been away since he was 11 only coming back to visit periodically.
Sure Doyle stole things but it was like the shop keepers were asking for it making it so easy and leaving things out in the open like this. He wandered around the area some more so he could avoid going home. This was so he could avoid his sisters and his new step family. His sisters teased him relentlessly and his new family... well they made him want to puke.
He heard a commotion from nearby and went to go see what was up. It seemed like the Kimono Girls were out for a stroll and everyone was losing their heads. He rolled his eyes and turned back to the open stalls where the shop keepers weren't paying attention to their wares. A smile began to spread across his face as he casually walked over.
It was Saya`s first day wandering this far from the boarding house. She liked to people watch in the heart of the city and see the pokemon people had with them. She didn't have her own and wished so much to be able to have one. Seeing them was just as appeasing, as there was no way there was enough room back at in the boarding house for pokemon and twenty children.
She knew, she had asked for one. Her adoptive family just gave her the only answer they always gave: "You know we would love to get you one, but we just don't have the spare money, or the room for it!" All she ever got was the minimal necessities and hand-me-downs. The children of the house fought among each other for what little they had, pretending to play nice when the adults came into the room. Saya always had to defend herself against the bigger kids for what she had. She couldn't be friends with them-- she was pretty much alone. She had left the house, just for a little while, just to get away from it all.
Saya's stomach rumbled. It must be near lunch time, but she had been walking further into the city all morning. By the time she got back, she figured the other kids would have devoured all there was for lunch.
She'll just have to make do. She spotted a fruit stand and decided the apples sitting out in the open would be easy enough for an eight year old to get away with unnoticed. She walked straight up to it, and looked around, hesitating. This was wrong, wasn't it? Her stomach argued with her, and she gave in.
Saya grabbed a big shiny red one, lingered, and thought of putting it back. What do I do now?
"HEY! THIEF! YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR THAT!" came a voice from behind the fruit stand. She wasn't a thief! There was nothing she could do now, the guy was already thinking she was stealing it! She bolted down the street as fast as her little legs could carry her.
The man's bellowing voice let Saya know that he was right behind her, "STOP THAT GIRL!" He yelled at the passersby. There was people everywhere. Saya dodged and continued running. It was just an apple!
If she could only-- CRASH! Saya ran into something and fell backwards, tossing her apple somewhere into the crowd. She was too dazed to know what it was.
Doyle was just about to grab a necklace off of a table when someone started yelling about a thief. His head snapped up and his hand went back to his side. He thought for sure he was going to have a big hand slapped down on his shoulder but none came. Apparently there was someone else out here working the crowd and stalls.
He didn't notice a young girl come barreling at him until it was too late. She crashed into him sending him to the ground, spilling his pockets and pouches full of stolen goods. "THIEF!" The jewelry lady called out spotting Doyle's stolen goods and the stolen apple. Doyle silently cursed and quickly scooped up his things.
"Don't just stand there!" He hissed at the girl. No way was he going to get caught or allow her to be. If she was brave enough to try and steal something then she was cool in his book. However she apparently needed help on her thievery skills. He grabbed her apple and her hand and began pulling her through the crowd. The crowd worked to their advantage for once as people began to turn to see what the commotion was about and quickly parted for the running kids. However they closed ranks again in time to block the adult chasing them.
Turning down an alley Doyle led them deeper into the city to a unused building. They should have lost any pursuit for now. He let go of the girl's hand and sagged against the wall. "What... were..... you.... thinking...getting....caught....like....that?" He gasped. It had been some time since he had to run like that. Usually he was smoother at his shoplifting so he didn't have to run.
When her eyes finally uncrossed themselves, she saw that she had run into a boy and not a pole. Various jewelry was scattered about on the ground.
Saya didn't have much time to think, however, as yet another shop owner cried out. Everything was happening so fast-- the boy was now leading her through the streets and she hasn't fully comprehended what was happening. She had no idea where they were going, she just ran.
They entered an old building and finally was able to stop. She didn't know if she could have run any further than that. Saya hunched over, panting. Tired, hungry, but glad she wasn't hurt.
"I wasn't even-- I just picked it up! I was going to put it back! He assumed!" She protested, her lower lip quivering. "I'm hungry!" At that last line, she started sobbing, and wiped her eyes on her oversized t-shirt. The events of the day was too much for her to handle.
"Then you should have put it back and told him you were just looking to see if his fruit was fresh." Doyle replied finally getting his breath back. He sank to the floor finally and watched as she cried. He reached into his one pouch and pulled out a handkerchief. He held it out to her and waited for her to take it.
"Well if you're hungry then eat the spoils of your unintended theft." He said reaching down and grabbing the apple. He held it out to her and then gave it to her. "Man..... you certainly did ruin everything for me. They're going to be looking for me again and now I'm going to have a hard time pawning all of this stuff off." He lightly complained with a sigh, "You may not have meant to steal but you need to learn how to keep your cool."
"But but but-- He was yelling and and..." The small girl took the handkerchief that the boy offered and blew her nose into it before continuing, "He chased me!" She was bawling. "And I panicked!"
Upon sight of her apple, she stopped crying immediately and took a huge chuck out of it. She listened, but she had no idea what the boy was talking about. "What are you doing with all those?" She indicted towards the stolen goods, intrigued.
"Wait! You're not going to kidnap me, are you?" She suddenly exclaimed.
Doyle rolled his eyes at her as she explained what happened. "So what. If you hadn't planned on stealing it then you should have yelled back.... and then started crying. Make him seem like a bad guy." He said. Clearly Doyle had been around the block and knew how to work people when trying to steal stuff. "Also if you do decide to take something from the food stores or carts then work with someone else. It's good to have someone working as a distraction and the other work on getting the grub."
He looked at his stolen goods which were sticking out of his pouches. He shoved them back into the pouches and shrugged. "Usually I sell them off to whoever I can find who will buy them. Other times I just put them in my stash and hold on to them until I need them." He explained.
Hearing her question his eyes grew wide. Then he threw his back laughing so hard he had to clutch his sides and had tears coming out of his eyes. "Oh that's a grand one. A kid kidnapping another kid. Oh man... you're so funny." He said when he was down to just a chuckle, "What's your name kid?"
"Saya." She didn't see what was so funny. He did just grab her off the streets and led her into an empty building.
She took a moment to think about everything he had said as he laughed his head off. "You stole those!" She gasped. "You're a bad guy! You're like one of those boys back at home that take my toys!" She took another bite out of her apple, still refusing to acknowledge her own attempt at theft. She eyed him suspiciously.
"I'm Doyle." He replied finally calmed down from his hysterics. He raised a brow and looked at her. "So what if I stole them? I can't help it the store keepers made it so easy just leaving it all out like that." He said and shook his head, "Sorry I don't take toys... or take from little kids. I only take from the adults. No reason for me to go without something when they have so much of it."
He didn't bother to mention that it was now second nature to just grab stuff as he walked by and that when he saw things just left out it was like it was calling to him to take it. "Oh if you don't want the boys at home to take your toys then hide them.... or beat them to teach them not to take from you. You need to show them that you're bigger than them..... higher up on the food chain. Don't let them give you any crap."
Saya nodded, listening to the boy carefully. She was glad he wasn't going to be stealing her toys. "Ohh, you're smart, Doyle!" She said, trying out his name. Then, finally smiled.
"Yea, I'll show them to pick on little girls!" Saya put on her best determined face and curled her little hands into fists. She straightened her delicate 3'5" frame and prepared to stomp all the way back home and beat up all the boys.
Doyle shrugged. "I guess. Then again if you ask my big sister Gormlaith she'll tell you I'm as dumb as a brick." He said. He had some street smarts not the book smarts his sister had.
He smirked at her attitude and her 'fighting' face. "Yeah you show them Saya." He then stood up standing a full two feet over her, "Make sure you tell me how that goes." He wasn't one to fight another person's fight but he certainly did like hearing about them.
He walked over to the door and peeked out. "Well it's all clear. If you wanna go I suggest that you go now." He said. He himself was about to leave. As to where he would go..... well he'd probably end up either at home or another abandoned building that he hung out at.
She relaxed her stance. "I'll show them real good!" She wasn't quite sure how, but she was too riffled up to think clearly. Saya walked outside and a little ways away from the building before turning back, as if forgetting something. "How do I find you again?"
Doyle smirked and nodded. "I'm sure you will." He said and like her wasn't sure how but figured she would think of something. He walked out as well and stopped near the door. "You know the Burned Tower? Well near that is some abandoned buildings. The one on the far left is another place I hang out. You can find me there most days." He replied, "See ya later Saya." He then walked off and disappeared into a passing crowd of people.
Saya gave Doyle a brisk wave before they parted ways. She never did see him again.
Present-- Rocket Base
Earlier that day, Saya was introduced to the provisions room by a Rocket grunt that she was assigned on a mission with. The higher ranking grunt showed her how to get a communicator, and told her that they could use it to keep in touch when they weren't in direct contact.
A mission had brought the girl to the city. They've completed their mission, so Saya was told she could have the rest of the day to explore the town and they would meet back up at dusk to go back to the base.
Remembering that she had made a note about figuring how Fifi used this little magical gadget to find her room, she wondered what else it could do. Saya fiddled with the buttons and on-screen options. She was amazed by technology, having grown up with nothing special of her own.
The short girl kept her head down while walking, her face was inches away from the tiny screen. She was concentrating so hard on figuring out the communicator that she wasn't looking where she was going. Her left shoulder slammed right into someone, knocking the communicator out of her hands. It slid across the floor.
"Sorry," she mumbled, barely audible. She didn't even look up, as she dove to pick the communicator off the ground.
Nor did he see her again as he soon left for Unova having heard that his father was there.
~~~~~

Doyle still wasn't paying much attention but he did have a slight smile from the memory. He wondered what happened to little Saya and if she ever did teach those boys a lesson. His thoughts were interrupted when someone's shoulder rammed into him. He heard the sound of something hitting the floor and looked down. It was in time to see a Rocket Communicator go sliding across and then a teenager diving after it.

"Jeez what where you're going will ya?" He said walking over and quickly helping the girl up after she had grabbed the communicator. "You're not supposed to have that out in plain sight like this." He hissed quietly. It was only then that he got a look at her face, which seemed oddly familiar.
