This thread exists for the sole purpose of discussing, A: How to get new crew, B: The promotion of existing crew, and C: The demotion or probation of existing crew. These matters all hold equal significance, as for the guild to flourish, we need an active, productive crew.
Crew Status Luo1304 - Captain - Hiatus Gregar828 - Vice Captain - Active Hinote Tosatsu - Vice Captain - Active Hikaro_rin - Hikaro - Active Panthers7 - Crew - Probation
These statuses represent the member's activity as crew, not as a member or anything else, though in some cases it applies to both stations.

Before getting into the intended discussion for this thread (The promotion quiz), I feel that, unfortunately, we should consider placing Somnis and Kaze on probation as well. I'm not certain that either really have any interest in the guild anymore, and as neither have given any input as crew in quite some time (Excepting the recent ballot.), it may be time to let them go. Somnis, particularly, has been on indefinite hiatus for a number of months now, with no indication of having plans to return. While I feel both could be valuable members of crew should they return to full activity, we cannot afford inactive crew right now.

I dont really like the idea of adding to the ballot after the fact, but I will add them because its about that time...

Okay, with that taken care of for the moment, on to the crew drive.
I already mentioned it in suggestions, obviously, but I feel our best option is a short quiz, similar to the first chuunin exams we did. About ten questions would probably be about right. After that, we can have a short class explaining the proper answers, if necessary, and possibly another quiz IF we feel it is needed.
For the questions, I feel we should have a variety covering different areas of crew jobs. Customs, battle, debate, system development, and so on. Some of these questions could be in "Essay" format, requiring a written out answer, while some could be multiple choice. Trap questions could also be fun, forcing a wrong answer to look correct and seeing if anyone catches it. One of my favorites in that regard is one Mistah made for a crew application, which has small references to racism as well as other harsh insults. Some applicants respond more harshly to the racism, practically letting the other, arguably equally offensive insult slide. I definitely want to include at least one question on that line.
So, we need questions!

Hinote and Gregar have been acting strangely and seem to be planning something. You have a bad feeling about it, and are worried that they might be plotting something wrong. What do you do? A, Confront them directly. B, Alert Luo that something is wrong. C, Stay out of it and hope for the best.
You've been in crew for awhile now, and have realized that while she is only Crew ranked like you, Hikaro seems to be acting like a VC, and evens seems to control the VCs at times. What do you do? A, Ignore her. She has no real power. B, Ask Luo or the VCs about it. C, Confront her yourself. D, Embrace the shadow regime.
You've been put in charge of a customs field, and have been doing a pretty good job, but after you denied something of Timmy's, he just wouldn't stop arguing about it, and he's starting to get on your nerves. What do you do? A, Tell him it's denied, and refuse to respond. B, Just approve it and get it over with. C, Call in Hinote to put him in line. D, Explain it again, and hope he understands this time.
~~~
That's the basic idea as far as multiple choice goes. Just a few fun ones I came up with. They're a bit silly, yeah, but they do have their purpose, though it's a bit subtle. I think it's a good format to keep things simple, but on track. Should definitely have some more serious examples of course, but silly ones are good too.
Customs questions, while I won't write one now, should be in the format of an actual custom of some kind. Some should be a bit OP or flawed. Ones we would deny but someone less experienced might not pick up on. Other should be good enough for approval, but written in such a way as to appear bad, while others could be perfect. Variety to keep them off guard. Obviously these would require the answer to be written in the way of a custom judgement.
Essay questions would be basically the same as the ones above, but perhaps a bit deeper and without suggested answers. See what they provide as their own answer. I think we should probably reuse a couple from the ld format for those as well, since they have valuable points they touch on.
Two people are fighting in an OoC thread about a recent RP battle. RPer 1 is accusing RPer 2 of God Modding while RPer 2 says that RPer 1 was Meta Gaming. You have read the posts yourself and you think it could go either way. Both RPers seem to be highly annoyed and their fight is getting heated. Some of the other members are starting to get involved in the dispute as well. You are the only crew member online and this problem needs to be resolved now. What do you do?
Bobby and Sally are two members of the guild that seem to have been friends for a long time. One day they seem to have a fight. Bobby called Sally a know it all b***h and Sally called Bobby an annoying little ******. You see this dispute quickly getting out of hand in the guild's chatroom and you know some members may be getting offended by what is being said. What do you do?
I threw some of the background questions from the old formats back in, since some of them hold important info as well. I did remove several however, that were either unnecessary or duplicates of a sort.
Our goal with this is to entirely avoid the interviews and time before getting the applicants into crew, so I think this application should, again, be mostly based on the questions. We need several fairly general questions that cover a lot of information in a little space so we don't have to wade through useless stuff. I also can't think up all the questions myself, since that would make them all too similar and boring, so you guys need to pitch in and make some up too! What important traits do you think a crew member needs? What question would best reveal that trait, without being obvious to the untrained eye?
It'd be nice to get this started by the start of next week if possible, so I'd like to hurry and finish the application.
I would avoid specifically mentioning members, even in a half joking light, but other than that I agree with these questions. Also, we should add a section in the first three questions for the applicant to write their own answer.
Posted: Fri Jan 18, 2013 1:39 pm
I like the first two with the names. The first because it references the both of us, meaning the VCs. The question loses some of it's meaning if it's changed to fake names, and becomes less subtle if you say "The VCs".
The second I used the name because, well, that scenario is actually fairly descriptive of how the crew seems to work sometimes. It won't work at all without the name. If it used a fake name, it would have no meaning. If it said "A crew member", it would change the proper answer entirely.
The third I just used Timmy as an in joke. I think even he would appreciate it a bit. If you still dislike that one though, it can be changed.
Having an "Other" option on the multiple choice would remove the aspect of trying to pick the right answer out of a list of wrong answers. However, an explain your answer section would be a prudent idea. I'll go ahead and add that.
Just for fun, what do you think I intended as the correct answers on the first three?
Scenarios Following are several questions relating to scenarios you may find yourself in as crew. Please answer each honestly and to the best of your capability.
Hinote and Gregar have been acting strangely and seem to be planning something. You have a bad feeling about it, and are worried that they might be plotting something wrong. What do you do? A, Confront them directly, depending on the result, B, Alert Luo that something is wrong.
I would confront them first because it is the logical thing to do. It wouldn't make me look good as a crew member to start pointing fingers around at people that are higher than me in the ranks of the crew because it makes rifts among the crew, and bad blood, which could get in the way of the work. Depending on the result of my talks with Hinote and Gregar I'd report to Luo, the Guild Captain, if they indeed are planning anything out of line.
You've been in crew for awhile now, and have realized that while she is only Crew ranked like you, Hikaro seems to be acting like a VC, and evens seems to control the VCs at times. What do you do? None of the above
None of the answers given actually do show what I would do; I would in fact ignore it, not her, because she actually does have power. She has more experience and time than I do as a crew member, and has a deeper relationship with the rest of the crew than what I would have, so she could, in fact, act like a VC.
You've been put in charge of a customs field, and have been doing a pretty good job, but after you denied something of Timmy's, he just wouldn't stop arguing about it, and he's starting to get on your nerves. What do you do? None of the above.
I'd call in another crew member, probably a VC, or whoever is active at the moment. Instead of getting the crew member to put the person involved in line, I'd get the crew member to weigh in on the denial of the custom jutsu, to add his/her own input and use it as the final verdict so that the party involved does in fact see that I was not the only one whom thought it should have been denied, in the case that the other crew member does in fact deny it.
Hinote and Gregar have been acting strangely and seem to be planning something. You have a bad feeling about it, and are worried that they might be plotting something wrong. What do you do? A, Confront them directly.
Confronting the two of them directly would be the correct thing to do in a case like this. I have no solid evidence to go to Luo so that would make me look like a paranoid fool in front of the Captain and seem like i don't trust my fellow crew members. On the other hand I can't just sit by and do nothing, because if they are indeed planning something, and I, nor the other crew members know about it, it could be counter productive to the guild, regardless if it is Hinote and Gregar, two crew members which wouldn't do anything to harm the guild.
You've been in crew for awhile now, and have realized that while she is only Crew ranked like you, Hikaro seems to be acting like a VC, and evens seems to control the VCs at times. What do you do? B, Ask Luo or the VCs about it.
Despite how silly it would sound when asking a VC, it would in fact be the simpler way to go about it. I can't ignore her because she is part of the work team, and she does in fact have power, because she is a member of the crew, a pretty influential one at that. Confronting her wouldn't really work. It would make me look jealous and seem like I am trying to climb up the ranks somehow and would make her weary of me, not only that but it would make her question my motives as to why I am in the crew, if it is just to have some sense of superiority to the rest of the members of the guild and maybe have some sort of special treatment, which there is none. As for embracing the Shadow Regime; which Regime?
You've been put in charge of a customs field, and have been doing a pretty good job, but after you denied something of Timmy's, he just wouldn't stop arguing about it, and he's starting to get on your nerves. What do you do? A, Tell him it's denied, and refuse to respond, then C, Call in Hinote to put him in line.
Parting from the Premise that I have already checked the application various times to make sure that his argument is solid, I would tell him that the final verdict is denied because an explanation would have been given, on several occasions as to why it is, and that there would not be a way around it. If he keeps on pressing the Issue I'd go on and call a crew member, any of them, not just Hinote, to help me put the member in line if I feel that he is blatantly disregarding my position for not accepting the verdict.
Some of the other members are starting to get involved in the dispute as well. You are the only crew member online and this problem needs to be resolved now. What do you do?
I'd tell both of the parties to calm down, first off. Then I would go on to tell them how they are both guilty of what is being accused. RPer 1 did in fact Meta Game, and RPer 2 did in fact God Mod. Parting from the premise that this would be both of their first offence in the guild itself, I'd give them a slap on the wrist and call the fight null, taking the matter up to a VC or the Captain himself, to make it so that the battle never took place. If this isn't in fact their first offence, I would tell them how they both went against the guild's rules and policies, any further arguing over a matter where they both are guilty just makes them both look like bad sports, and even worse roleplayers. Further more I would tell them that I would take the matter up with the higher ups in the guild, and then decide their punishment, coming down with the full weight of the institution of POtS.
Bobby and Sally are two members of the guild that seem to have been friends for a long time. One day they seem to have a fight. Bobby called Sally a know it all b***h and Sally called Bobby an annoying little n****r. You see this dispute quickly getting out of hand in the guild's chatroom and you know some members may be getting offended by what is being said. What do you do?
I would tell them both to stop fighting on the guild chatroom. That this is no place to be resolving Real life issues like that and that they are just making a scene. I'd say that it would be their one and only warning before I would get the rest of the crew involved; that if they wish to continue speaking in the guild forums they best behave. If not, it would be a pitty to have to lose two would-be good RPers over something like this.
While he didn't answer them all quite as I would have (Something I don't actually expect to happen, as that would require them to be in my brain to understand why I would answer in those ways.), Akura has given good reasoning for each of his choices. Any flaws shown are easily corrected, and he has been crew before. Considering our current rather desperate situation, I say we accept his application.
The only real problem with this app is the decision to nullify the battle. I don't know why that is such a common choice, but in my eyes at the very least, it should be the very last resort.
As long as you or anyone really, goes into details with him on how we'd handle the last two, I wouldn't mind having him back here. When he was here he actually did contribute a fair amount.
It might be a good idea to discuss what these crew members will be allowed to do. The extent of their power.
-Obviously they would be allowed to participate in all crew discussions.
It seems like it would be wise to limit their powers otherwise though. Any drastic measures should be left to "veteran" crew. For instance: -declaring a fight null is pretty drastic. -Kicking/banning members -deleting/moving threads/posts -Ouguns should be out of the question for anyone but VC+.
Should they have any authority at all in custom approvals beyond keeping the peace? (if they become a judge they obviously have power, but the reasons we denied most of the previous applicants often had to do with their ability to judge things)
Should their limitations be determined individually or as a whole group to prevent jealousy and crap?
They would be required to participate in all discussions, to the best of their ability. Meaning if they know nothing on the subject they can opt out, but have to make it known. Otherwise their presence is basically a requirement.
Other than that, they would have power as selectively granted. If they feel a post needs to be moved or deleted, they ask first. If we tell them to take care of customs, they have the right to work in that area. That's most likely going to be the main job at first, is customs apprenticeship.
Banning and kicking is out, as per the crew rules, and you're right in that Ougun should be VC+ only. We should however establish some form of warning system leading into the harsher Ougun system, but that's a discussion for another thread. (See: Rulebook).
Base limitations should be as a group, with the ability for advancement and gaining other rights.
Posted: Sun Jan 20, 2013 10:10 am
It might as well be a general base limitation. That way if we end up choosing someone to do something outside those limits, it's very clear that this was done based on the individual's expertise and not because we wish to exclude certain people.
