so this here is a topic for anyone who wants to share what they know about herbs/foods etc...

ill start: im going to try and start growing vegetables and herbs [and later on maybe fruit too] i have a huge garden so its about time....im very limited in what i can plant atm due to lack of planters...i have two wicker baskets and one hexagonal plastic plant pot...im also going to make a large vegetable bed...

but just what should i grow? whats most important?
as i live in northern ireland frost is a problem but rain is plentiful and according to a man in the local garden centre: "northern ireland has one of the best growing climates in the world"

also atm i cannot get hold of a lawn mower and i do not have the time to cut any grass the grass at my house is very overgrown [about a foot tall id say] so im limited as to what i can put directly into the ground unless the plants are tall and can resist grass no matter its height.

i cannot have a greenhouse either as i have jealous neighbours and sometimes there is gang activity.

I hope this isn't racist, but I'd start with potatoes. razz

Seriously, I'd go with any kind of tuber or root vegetable. They're also good in case of nuclear fallout because they're underground.

the first three planters i will put them on wooden stills up off the grass with maximum exposure to the sun...

right in terms of planters heres what i have:
rectangular wicker basket 17 inches long 2.5 inches deep 9.5 inches wide

tapering oval wicker basket 5 inches deep 13 inches wide at top 8 inches wide at base 11.5 inches long at base 18.5 inches long at top

plastic hexagonal [8 sided] planter: 10.5 inches long/wide 7.5 inches deep

im also making a huge wooden planter but size is yet to be determined all i know is that it will be 16 inches deep

im thinking of the following plants: pumpkin, ginseng, ginger, horsetail, leeks, parsnips, turnips, peppermint and im not sure what else.....what do you think i should add in there?

what would you say are the most important herbs?

Potatoes are good because they can survive in harsher climates than most vegetables.
@OP: So, potatoes. Carrots and cucumbers are also good for nutrient purposes, and I know a tomato is a fruit, but you might want to try growing some of them anyway. Remember, the more different colored fruits and vegetables you eat, the healthier you are.

For potatoes you're going to need something reasonably deep. I'd Google the specifics.

I don't really have an opinion on the most important herbs but basil is useful and easy to grow.
