A battle arts tournament. A chance to improve on her path to be as competent a fighter as she can become. As Kotone eagerly stepped up to fight her first battle here, her vision began to scan the area to gather her focus. But a persistent memory sprang to mind again, her shoulders had begun to slump, but stubbornly she caught herself quickly and corrected the slight motion with a sudden small jerk as her brows reflexively furrowed somewhat and her closed smile fell into a serious line. Inwardly she was trying to violently shake away the returning recollection, but she felt this was easier thought than done and tried to further get her mind off the jabbing memory by starting little jumps and upon stopping then transitioning to rotating her wrists, neck, and joints. Suddenly she noticed her opponent was confronting her now and admonished herself mentally for not noticing him earlier on. She bowed hastily followed by her entering a preparatory fighting stance intended for allowing observation as well as promoting fast reaction. Her foe was a good-looking fellow 6-foot something in height she reckoned, and she would have considered his appearance, the toothy, white grin of well-aligned teeth he was showing off and all, charming if he didn't give her the impression that he was looking down on her. Kotone was not one to be distracted in battle by good looks, but she was admittedly trying to distance her mind desperately from what was in fact distracting her. Unfortunately, it seemed to her she was only further being reminded of what she was not wanting to remember.

Fu stretched well before combat, watching his opponent look all around as though in a daze. He largely ignored her, except for whenever she was in his view naturally, to focus on his muscles. Following that, he took a leather clip out of his uniform and bound his hair up high: even in a ponytail, it still fell halfway to his back. And he, unlike some of the others, focused mostly on seals.

His weapon, however, was a scythe: a full scythe, though with a slightly shorter blade. It glinted in the light. Unbeknownst to anyone unfamiliar with Fu, mostly he used its length to etch his seals into the ground, rather than to hack like it implied.

But, in a pinch, it could do both. His arms were muscular from years of practice, but he wasn't yet strong enough to wield it as though it was light, so every step he took made it apparent how much the weapon really weighed.

The air smelled faintly of flowers as he approached, flowers and honey, and his scales shimmered gold. "Let's start, shall we?"

Fu waited for the gong, and then carved a fire seal into the ground.

There was something..she thinks she can find peculiar about her opponent, but she couldn't put her finger on it. Not yet, and she wanted to find out what the something nagging her thoughts about him as she watched him move was. She started to explain in her head that her mind wasn't as clear as it could be right now because of the memory that was presently succeeding in troubling her with dividing her focus to keep it at bay from flooding her thoughts. But very soon after she thought this thought, Kotone deemed it just an excuse she was trying to make as she unsheathed her staff from her side angrily at herself. And she replied to him, "O-okay, Sir." She then proceeded to take note of his weapon as she remained where she stood. And this was the next question that came to her mind: What had he started doing?

The young woman, though pretty he supposed, seemed very distracted. It was a shame. Useful, but a shame. Fu readied his scythe and took one step with his left foot, swinging once, then with his right swinging again, and then he used the momentum he had built up to speed up the pace, repeating the combo towards Kotone.

After this set, he had a plan: retreat. That was the pattern. Step, step, step; step, step, step; calm momentum, prepare on the defensive, and step back. The point of it was not to hit her; in fact, the battle would be a fairly gruesome one if she let herself take any of the hits in full. The point would be revealed afterwards.

And now there was something else. Kotone was endeavoring to fully absorb the actions the opponent was performing and still she couldn't grasp as much of everything that was happening in their match as firmly as she'd like to examine them. She had..blurry hunches that formed in her mind..something inside her telling her to connect what he was doing earlier with his weapon with what he was doing with it now. Something..was telling her that perhaps he was luring her..luring her..into..a trap? But there it was, the force of an assault by the memory of words spoken to her: Kotone, the things you are doing in your life are a waste of it. The recollection prompted a pain at her chest, but she kept any tears back at the might of her will not to cry, not now. She had better not and she had done absolutely nothing yet since this fight began was what she'd started to harshly pass as judgement upon herself and her present behavior. A war inside her was now in full force, something telling her not to go on with what she was about to execute, it wasn't the right move as it was, it hadn't gone fully through needed considerations and modifications before being carried out. Something was telling her she was uselessly just standing there, her mental and physical efficiency was rubbish, and in regards to this battle she was feeling highly of the soundness of this. The likelihood that she could make out what was a battle analysis and what was a distraction or how specifically these two types of thoughts could mesh was swiftly diminishing and in her state she decidedly just ran forward with the frenzy of an option she took hold of from the mess of all her current thinking. One more step in her run toward her foe and she intended to launch herself upward to follow through on the attack said option entailed.

The corner of Fu's mouth twitched when he finished the seal sequence and proceeded backwards, more quickly this time, before the mark ignited. It was set such that the reaction would begin once she hopped into the perimeter of the magicked area, one explosion for every step she took toward him.

He's done it more for the thick cloud of smoke that would rise up from the ground on activation than for the force of the fires themselves. Once she was sufficiently blinded, Fu himself would enter to make quick work of the girl.

If she made it through the mass without being hit, she would be walking directly into the blade of his scythe. If she didn't, well - his match was over. So he waited.

This was it, the trap, and this realization was made by Kotone instinctively in the sharp breath of a moment right after she had triggered the following. She had ended up not having maneuvered into the next part of the plan of action she opted on, because when her foot landed in the last step before the lift off she had intended, an explosion was the consequence of having taken it and was jolted in alarm into more steps forward instead and subsequently set off more fiery bursts. The force of each of them shook her with seemingly invisible blows and hastily she went with the previously intended to be offensive but now turned evasive attempt that shone briefly but glaringly in her chaotic thoughts. Then she was shocked into focusing largely on her having propelled herself further into her undoing in this fight. What had a bit more specifically ran through her mind was to spring back and out of the zone of fire. When her staff made contact with the ground as she was elongating it in her move out of the space, the next burst doing so had set off added its explosive strength to that of the force she had called forth with her use of her staff. Moreover and very effectively contributing to the outcome of all this, her retreat's steadiness was lessened still from its already so lacking amount of this by the last triggered explosion by her weapon. Kotone landed hard, very hard, despite having managed to succeed in avoiding a nastier fall by taking a slightly curled form that paid the greatest amount of the attention to her nape and head shielded with her arms. Rolling to a stop, an overwhelming ache consumed her body and gripped her all at once and prevented her from moving and she knew this battle was over and she couldn't bring her body to obey her to gather her strength enough in the span of time she was trying to get herself to get up and do things right, and was certainly not going to redeem herself in this match. One tear rolled down and then across her other cheek, the second, from her closed eyes as they blinked in pain. And then despite, their protest she got her elbows to carry a bit of her weight as she lifted her head up before having to rest her forehead on her clenched palms determinedly beginning the process of adamantly driving the gradual regaining of the energy enough to relocate herself to a more fitting place for recovery. As she shakily moved on to push her upper body up next, more tears slowly and silently streamed down her face as she focused on this task of picking herself back up outwardly and inwardly. She was disappoint in herself with how their confrontation turned out, but she wordlessly felt thankful to her opponent because she had learned what she believed to be valuable lessons from this. And as she struggled from both knees to one, was tiredly but able to give a bow of her head in the direction she saw her opponent last before her turn and making her way to the sidelines once more for now with one step then the next step then with more steps following them, the battle began to replay in her head from their entrances to her crash and somehow it was like through all this she was hit with an added spark to her flickering flame of aspirations, that she wanted to keep increasing her endurance. That no matter how much more hurting words she may hear from her mother and anyone, through pains, she wanted to keep that flame alight and have it continually develop and grow stronger.
