    [ history ]

Predictably, things went somewhat wrong at some point in Gabriel's life to end up with most of his family dead. He was born the second child of a fairly influential family on the wealthier side of Palisade. His father was an avid hunter and more often than not his family found themselves feasting upon great beasts struck down by their patriarch. Childhood was glorious, right up until it got strange. Nobody could place exactly the event that triggered a break, or at what time. Young Gabriel had never expressed any real interest in hunting, but it was expected of him to join from a fairly early age. When his father began butchering the game himself, though, an 8-year-old Gabriel found that he could not stomach the idea and could only linger by and pretend to not be nauseous.

      Then things changed.

The poor boy could relate nothing, of course, for reasons only he and his father shared. One night, Marie spirited away and disappeared, a great scandal for the times.

A week later, all of the family suddenly had gone missing and the mansion was a mess. Only Abelard could be confirmed as deceased. They found Gabriel a day later, still spattered with blood and apparently absent in his own mind.

If a runaway daughter was a scandal, this was an explosion.

The 13-year-old was sent away to his paternal grandmother, the only remaining relative that could be found within a reasonable distance, his mother's family being focused on another continent and entirely out of contact. It has been nearly a decade since the event; some people have forgotten and with others the rumors only escalated. Gabriel has returned to his old Palisade home with a crew of workers employed under him, and the reception has not been the most wonderful. Slurs are spewed, people have spit and thrown things. The wolves have returned, and so has the Blithe boy.

Honestly, Gabriel doesn't seem to mind.

Indeed he doesn't seem to feel much at all.

[ the scandal has been mentioned in newspapers of the time and featured in a book titled The Infamy of Fortune by Holden James where it is insinuated that Gabriel is the sole perpetrator. ]

    [ personality ]

Whatever the man is actually feeling, there is always something menacing in his movements and assuredly off. The man's mood is never negative in and of itself, although perhaps threatening in his silence. He smiles, although it never quite reaches his eyes, and will respond to every word ( if he responds at all ) with pleasantries that often do not match the interaction. Spit in the eye may garner a greeting where a polite 'hello' could end with nothing but a scalding albeit dead-fish stare. As he is not particularly social, there are not many people who know what to expect of him beyond whatever rumors they've heard. He is unpredictable and makes knots in people's chests and doesn't much care whether you enjoy his company or not.

        [ basics ]

      name morai.
      named for the fates.
      stage buck.
      gender male.
      generation two.

personality He emits a generally unsettling aura and can muster a stare to rival his Chosen. Moirai has calmed somewhat from his fawn days, but is still moderately aggressive and prone to outbursts. His mannerisms and reactions are sudden and unpredictable even for Gabriel, as they do send each other signals but react in very different ways. Sometimes the yearling can be used in terms of a mood ring. Morai is loyal as well, and rather protective of the only man he knows. He is aware of a deep connection, even if their first meeting was somewhat unsavory.

      [ totem ] [ fawn ] [ yearling ] [ buck ] [ buck unmasked ]

[ ten days later ]

Gabriel was an unrepentantly light sleeper, often awakened by the soft creak or an ancient beam or things he'd thought he'd heard. It stood to reason, then, that a thumping and juddering beneath his bed would wake him. There was a familiar tight feeling in his chest and a deafening whizzing in his head. The man rolled out of bed to the floor and glared at the rumbling shape he saw beneath the bed frame. His arm shot out, and he felt a sharp pain. It socked him into drawing away quickly, but only for a moment.

Something warm and airy brushed by Gabriel's hand and there was a quick snap! that echoed in the room. An attempt to grab the thing was met with another sharp pain, which this time did not phase him. He threw his hand forward and grabbed a handful of warmth and fur. Some beast had found their way into his room it seemed, and he pulled hard by the lose skin. The tapping that had punctuated the entire event suddenly became frantic and several bruising blows were inflicted to the man's arm, but nothing sharp, no canines apparent. What in the world was this thing? Chest heaving, eyes wild, Gabriel hooked his hands beneath the frame and flung the bed up on its side in one swift motion.

An angry fawn lunged from beneath and scrambled to its attacker, grabbing his pant leg and beginning to tug.

"Bête insupportable!"

Gabriel struck out and grabbed the deer by its muzzle, receiving another bite to the hand for his worries, this one tearing skin. Without much thought, he lunged and took the doe down with him, pinning its neck to avoid being bitten again. He had not accounted for the sharp hooves beating him in the chest.

Only with this pain did his mind's shrieking cease. He looked to where his bed had stood, now slightly broken and toppled, and beneath it the cheesecloth that had once held his glowing stone.

Except, of course, that the stone was gone.

He looked down to the fawn who had suddenly ceased to struggle, looking up at him with an intense, patient expression. On one limp leg, Gabriel recognized the pattern of a carpus and metacarpal bone. His chest heaved along with the young animal.

Why him? What had he done to account for this beast? Such bitter irony...

His bedroom door creaked open, and with his hair a wild mess Gabriel turned his head to see his grandmother standing passively in the hall.

"What is this?" she asked, voice calm and clear. She eyed the bruises and welts marking Gabriel's arms and hands a moment before she spotted the deer's head craning around her grandson's shoulder. "Ah! Gabriel, pourquoi avez-vous amené ici cet animal?! Dehors! Dehors!"

The man rose, his chin tilting upward with wild eyes. The door followed after, lowering his head and clattering his teeth in a threatening manner. The poor woman cried out again, gathering her nightclothes around her.

"Manou," Gabriel replied, his nostrils flaring, "There is something I must discuss with you."

[ brief meta post ]

Gabriel watched as the grounds erupted in fruit, something that was not natural regardless of the inclination of trees and vines. He first wondered if it might have been a hallucination, but others seemed to be reacting as well... which also could have been a hallucination? He plucked a cherry from the ground and rolled it in his palm. How odd, it seemed legitimate...

Why in the world had flowers suddenly exploded into fruit? He watched hesitant guests begin to take their first nibbles of the bounty, and other joined in like a mob of mindless fools. It was possible that Llyr was trustworthy; he made no judgements upon the man himself. Perhaps this had been a gift from the Queen... indeed, that seemed most likely considering the change of season, but Gabriel was not one to consume blatantly magical sustenance. He arched a brow at those around him, trying to watch for some effect. Nothing said he wouldn't eat it later... hours later. Once the effect of eating summoned fruit was made clear.
