It had occurred to Gabriel, after he had spent a reasonable amount of time simply watching guess flood in, that he did not miss the obligation of nobility. You were simply meant to stand around and make small talk with insufferably dull people until someone important said something meaningful and everyone clapped politely and went home. Of course, this ball in itself was particularly interesting at its base; the Queen was coming with all of the scandal surrounding herself and her mysterious black buck, not to mention her odd new adviser. The venue was rather spectacular as well, if he could say so. The people, though...

Nobility desired small talk. The working class avoided the nobility. It was a bit of a desperate situation. He of course rather preferred the lesser folk with their occupations and hobbies, but every attempt at conversation had been met with swift end for whatever reason. Even the working class seemed less interesting today. It was all well and good to observe (indeed it was a favorite pastime), especially the various Guardians wander the grounds, but he couldn't quite 'observe' the woman he was actually looking to find. Everyone was masked, even the deer, and every woman had curled or flounced her hair in some way that made her less recognizable. Merry could be any number of the women wandering around, but each was missing some prominent feature; her cheekbones, her hips, her bosom. it didn't strike him quite how improper it was to be eying such assets, but his intentions were purely identification.

He stood for now just beside a piece of wreckage, scanning the crowd with a glass of wine in his hand. He was dressed all in deep red, a suggestion from his grandmother to 'bring out the blue in his eyes'. His entire upper face was obscured, and even Morai wore headpiece of similar fabric and an accenting necklace. He had entirely refused to be ribboned, harnessed or saddled and even Manou had just thrown up her hands and given in. He stood just beside his Chosen, helping keep an eye out for Eris and her girl.

The dress was uncomfortable. Not because of the fabric, but rather because of how ornate it was. She picked one she thought had been modest, but even it had lace, frill, a few gems here and there. Green and white, hits of gold- it was far more colorful than her ruddy working dress. The dress itself was more than her month's wages. To own such a thing, much less wear it? What if it got ruined? Could she keep it? She might be mugged. Or worse. It was out of her element.

Hair pinned up, makeup long having been removed, (after all the feeling of cake on her face was hardly pleasant), and a mask that was just as ornate as her dress has Merry awkwardly attempting to stay out of sight from anyone and everyone. No one seemed to know he and while that was good, it was also frightening. No one she knew in a place she didn't belong. Guardians or not, a ball was no place for a bar wench.

Eris was just a reserved as her, skittishly trying to avoid the other guardians. Or she was, until a buck came into view with a few familiar markings. "Eris?" Merry said, wondering what had gotten her attention from across the area. A masked man in red, and looking at the buck near him, Merry had a guess to who it was. Hand on Eris's back she let the doe lead her to the pair, looking at the obscured man. "Gabriel?"

Morai sniffed the air and stamped the ground impatiently. It was a moment before he turned his head and saw who they were looking for or, more specifically, the deer-half of their tavern-friends. He had not seen Eris since reaching maturity, and he held some pride in his well-pointed antlers. Finally, he'd outgrown her. The Guardian threw his head and gave a sudden noise that made several heads turn, including Gabriel's. He turned just in time to hear his name, and a faint smile crossed his lips.

"Merry? Well, you look beautiful. Having fun?" he sipped his wine with a look that said he knew what her response would be.

Morai nosed Eris in the neck and delicately nibbled her fur.

The sudden nibbling of her fur had Eris make a small happy grunt. Morai had grown, and- a shake of her head she huffed over his horns. He needed to be careful with those. She didn't mind them long, looking him up and down before contenting herself to measure just how much larger he was to when he'd been a near fawn.

"Yes. That's me, Merry." Oh so contrary to the setting. She was a bar wench, what was she doing at a ball of all things? "And... A bit. It's just odd. I mean, A girl just hears about balls, you never expect to attend one. A girl like me anyway."

She sighed, wishing she had pockets to put her hands in. An apron would even help. "And you? You... don't seem to the the social type for ball if you don't mind me saying."

"Mm," Gabriel nodded. Even at his first ball, he had not been particularly unnerved, as a child who had grown up with social responsibilities, "I must say, I'm a bit confused as to why this isn't class-based, but Chosen-based... it seems, anyway. I know a few men and women here with nobility and no Guardians." He gazed around casually and shrugged.

Morai shook his head happily and snorted, showing off his new ornaments and stating his understanding. He had once destroyed a painting with his antlers. He dreaded the thought of rending flesh.

"I was raised in the noble class. My family was fairly influential, in its time. Until things changed, I was expected to attend social gatherings as much as the next man... child. You are correct in assuming I am antisocial, however. Good guess."

He made a motion to her with his wine glass and took a celebratory sip, smiling slightly.

"I'm terribly curious, thought, and my grandmother... she insists. She's somewhere around..." Again he eyed the crowd, and leaned slightly forward. He couldn't quite see her...

"Where are my manners? Would you like some wine? Punch? Something to eat? It gets easier with a little wine."

"Class would make everything easier I think. I keep worrying that I'm going to run into someone and offend, or worse, end up breaking some social taboo of upperclass snootiness." She looked at and him, trying to hide the sudden blush with a laugh.

"Not that, uhm, you're like that. Quite the opposite really!" Eris huffed to her chosen now warden. She needed to worry less. Usually it was the other way around. Returning to the buck, the doe looked Morai up and down before stamping her hoof in approval.

Merry fidgeted, fingers trying not to tangle or pick at the fine lace. "I'm used to crowds, to people. But that is when I'm at market, or in the tavern. This ball is.. well it like it's own world. You're grandmother is here though?" She wasn't sure if she should meet her. Part of her thought it odd. She didn't recall her in the manor.

"And it's alright. I don't think they have a strong enough wine to make my nerves go away. The food... maybe when the nerves have stopped making me feel like I'm going to faint." It was utterly a different world. "You think it's real then? The wolves and a war?"

"This is less of a ball and more of a... party? Nobody expects you to know the unnecessary fripperies of the noble class, don't worry." Gabriel smiled softly and sighed, peering around the party once more. It was a nice setting, at the very least.

"Yes," he responded then, "My grandmother is considered more of a noble than me. Were it not for herself and my grandfather, I would have been nothing of the sort. As for the attacks, yes. I believe wholeheartedly that some darkness is falling over Sunderland." He seemed oddly unaffected, and even smiled slightly after speaking. "I have seen the aftermath of wolf attacks and have heard the claims of the Great White Thing far too mournful to be faked. Of course, we in Palisade are further from the source... or we were, before tonight."

I don't know if you want to time-skip and make the rp reflect current goings-on? It certainly may make for interesting interaction. xD

Merry hoped not. Parties she was used to. Drinks and food. She was okay with. This party just had... the queen, and nobility.

No biggie.

"I see. She must be a lovely woman with you for a grandson." She shut her mouth, blushing slightly to what she'd said. "Er, really? I haven't seen anything, but then doubt I'd want to. Eris is skittish in a bar, hate to see her on a battlefield... which is very well where we might end up." Food was being brought out and she wasn't sure she had the will to eat.

"Would you mind my company for the evening."

"Well, I like to think we might have been chosen for a reason," Gabriel offered. He easily saw himself and Morai on the battlefield, although how long it would take for them to be lost in the fog of insanity would probably be lengthy the first time... not so later. He graciously denied a plate of hors d'oeuvres and then turned to Merry, that same real smile on his face.

"Absolutely, if my company isn't adverse?"

Morai, gladly beside one of his favorite Guardians, just gave a sneeze in agreement.

Merry couldn't guess why she'd been chosen. A bad roll of the dice for the guardians, all the luck for her. After all, Eris helped her gather the courage to move around. Gabriel might be right, and she hoped so. She did tend to waver on the subject.

Shaking her head at the waiter, she looked to the older man, wondering if it was poilte to do so. Still, she reached over, meekly trying to snake her arm into his. "Hardly. I rather enjoy your company." Eris gave Morai a nudge, looking to their chosen.

"And Eris likes Morai. So er- what does one do exactly, at a ball? "

"Stand around and act charmed," Gabriel responded, brows raising and he nodded and took a sip of wine, "Trust me, the wine helps."

As he night wore on, however, the man's good mood began to waver. The falling, exploding fruit was a subject of only annoyance. He turned to Merry, suggesting that 'I wouldn't eat that if I were you', and stepped back, away from the flying foodstuffs. As things got darker, he imagined it his own mind's design... until he saw a little girl react. His eyes widened and he turned to Merry. Was she experiencing it too? Blast the folks who had eaten the rot...

Stand around, act charmed, look pretty? Say no more, Merry was fine with that. As soon as a server came around with a fresh glass of wine she quickly took one, not even bothering with looking dainty as she took a few healthy mouthfuls. She was too sober for this. That and wine was oddly weaker than what she was used to. Still, it left a tingle on her tongue- Eris clicking her teeth at the chosen's choice of 'dealing with the ball' had Merry just taking small sips after.

The wine did help for a while, eyes looking from fruit to people to Gabriel. She was just going to trust his advice and stay close to him. As the festivities began to shift, Merry shifted in turn, hand squeezing Gabriel's arm as she stared forward. Just ignore what you saw and block it out- just like any horror.

"....I take it that balls are not normally like this."

Eris had begun to pace behind Merry, nervousness making her want to flee, loyalty keeping her pinned by her chosen.

"...not for other people, anyway."

Although there was concern for his family, Gabriel found himself less worried about the old woman who had raised him to adulthood. He had seen her strength, after all. Merry was strong, certainly, but to what extent? Could she handle the gore around them?

Fear did not strike until the audience collapsed, however, and the man's chest heaved as Morai grunted and strained to lift his weakened neck. It was the appearance of a bloodied man that caused two things to happen.

One, Gabriel realized that he was somehow intended to stop this horror atop his mighty steed; he and every Chosen.

Two, the man had been shot, but was still moving. He might have lunged up and confronted Gwyn himself, were it not for the lack of coordination in his limbs. The man... creature, beast, whatever he was-- the Great White Thing began toward the wood again and Gabriel's breath caught. He willed his limbs to work and, with every ounch of strength remaining, heaved himself to the side and over Merry, at least placing a few good inches of yielding meat between her and Gwyn.

He remained there, breathing heavily, waiting for a blow to the back of the head or to be somehow impaled (that would be just his luck), and then Gwyn was gone. The feeling began to return to Gabriel's limbs in tingling waves, not unlike those coming out of a psychotic episode. He was fairly certain that he had not been the only one in this nightmare, however. He lifted his head, and then turned back to--

.... oh. ... err ...

He blinked down at Merry and tried in vain to bend a knee for support.

"I'm afraid that I cannot quite feel my legs as of yet..."

As Morai got his mobility back, he ran to the edge of the grounds and trumpeted at the figure that had long since disappeared. Yeah, you'd better run! He turned around almost immediately, though, and began to fret over Eris, nibbling and licking her fur like a new mother might. Was she okay?! Had she been hurt?!

Fear kept a person rooted, fear and caution. Merry usually was first to flee at the signs of guns, of things she couldn't handle, but with Gabriel, at the ball, she was so far from her element she did not know what to do. Part of her said to move forward, to try and help, yet as people fell, Eris gently sent her soothing thoughts, contrary to the doe's normally overly flighty nature.

It wasn't safe, this was not her matter to interfere with. Not yet, now now.

The man shot was stared at, blindly, dumbly almost. He should have been dead.
He wasn't.

For a while Merry wondered if she had lost the ability to even breathe, her body refusing to move, her mind screaming at her to run. Gabriel's voice roused her, and she jumped, tense and unsure. The unwanted guest was gone, as was any mirth Merry might have had. It took a moment, Looking at the man before she reached out, gently touching his front, eyes cast down.

"Thank you." She berated herself for it, for her own weakness. "I don't think I can move much myself actually." She tried to laugh, but it came out forced. Eris lingered, looking only to Morai's running off briefly before looking to her chosen.

The buck's return prompted her to shake at him, clearly fine. As was he obviously, and good for it, he shouldn't have run off, what if something happened? Besides their chosen might need them. A small lick to his face, Eris motioned at said chosen. They would be needed soon enough.

Rather than be embarrassed by the situation, Gabriel seemed to be only put-off. He attempted to make a continuous swimming motion with his legs, and only when a knee lifted did he brighten slightly.

"There we go..." It took a minute or so more before he was able to rise with the help of Morai's sturdy antlers. He huffed and looked off toward the woods, eying the trail of blood that signaled Gwyn's retreat. He could undoubtedly track the man, but to attempt so would be foolish. he clearly was a man of substantial power, and who knew what legions he had under his command? He offered a hand down to Merry to help her up.
