Catreena was on the verge of having a panic attack. Mother had said this place was safe. She'd said Catreena would have fun. What Mother didn't say was what a terrifyingly massive variety of other beings would be wandering around. What she seemed to omit was the sheer myriad of students who would be attending. It was absolutely petrifying. The young dryad thought she might die right then and there.
Of course she did not die, but instead resorted to the defense mechanism that she used whenever she found herself in a situation that made her feel as such. She turned into a tree. A small green sapling about her height and build, to be exact.
As a tree she didn't have eyes to see disturbing images; she didn't have ears to be deafened by the roar of the outside world. In her tree state she could remain calm and focused...as long as no one touched her. Trees could still feel, after all, and were someone to knock on wood, trip over a root, brush against her leaves, or - or - dare she think of it? - carve into her bark, she would be able to feel it.
However, she much preferred this form to the humanoid one that her badge forced her to take on when she wasn't a tree. She could still feel the vibrations through the ground of the sound outside, but at least she didn't have to concern herself with what was making them or why, right? No one paid attention to a tree.
Unfortunately, this was not likely to be the case when said tree was growing directly in the middle of a school hallway, but no one had bothered to tell Catreena that.

There were a lot of things Frost was used to seeing in school hallways. Gnomes running here and there with girls panties. Slime oozing out of lockers. Students sleeping randomly on the floor. Others trying to hide, (very poorly). Things frozen. Things on fire. Trees however? Trees, well a spaling really, was new.
Red eyes went over the growing thing, debating if he should mess with it. It was just… standing there. In the middle of the hallway. Come the stream of students, it would just make the hall even harder to navigate. Tilting his head, he tapped the bark experimentally. Perhaps it was a reaper’s magic gone wrong? That one teacher’s… accident? Frost wasn’t quite sure. Huffing he pokes at it. “How queer.”

In response to the tapping, the trunk of the sapling appeared to quiver. This may have just been due to force of the tapping itself - the thing didn't look very sturdy, anyway - but this quivering almost seemed to be born of surprise or fear.
In a moment it was still again. However, if one didn't know better, they might have said that the otherwise motionless thing now seemed just a little more crooked than before. It looked as if it were leaning away from the student who had dared touch it.
Camouflaged somewhat among the little green leaves sprouting across its bark and the natural knots in the wood, a bright green eye opened in the trunk and regarded the stranger curiously. After a moment of careful consideration, a small nose and a pair of lips formed to reveal a brown face engraved into the tree trunk.
"Queer?" A small voice spoke from the lips. "Y-you think I'm...queer?" It softened to a whisper, words spoken more by the rustle of the leaves than a sound produced by any kind of vocal chords. "What about me...is queer?" it inquired, seeming to have taken Frost's words to heart. The tree-being was evidently quite self-conscious about the simple statement.

The sudden small movement had red eyes looking down, watching. It was very odd indeed. The sudden eye and face had him step back. He’d never quite encountered a tree like this. If anything, the fact it was talking proved it wasn’t some mutant minipet.
“Less you being queer so much as the sudden… sapling to have grown in the middle of the hallway. Trees do not often grow in buildings, much less her in Amity.” He huffed. “Are you a student then? I apologize. I had thought you a… well. I thought you a tree growing in the hall. Not a common thing you’ll understand.”

"Oh. They don't?" Slowly, the slender trunk of the plant began to form into a more humanoid shape, like an invisible wood carver working in at an accelerated speed. Twigs withdrew into branches and branches into the trunk as if someone had pressed rewind on their growth. It only stopped when there were just two limbs left and five delicate twigs on each limb the same varying sizes of length as fingers on a hand.
The greenery of the tree grew along with pale green hair to frame the brown face, so that all that was left of the original tree was the bottom of the trunk where the roots appeared to be clinging to the ground. This gave the student the appearance of a girl growing out of a tree. She stared at her roots uncertainly, as if hesitant to revert them to legs.
"I don't understand," she replied to his question, her thin brows furrowing. "If it's not common and trees do not often grow in buildings, then why where you fooled into thinking I was a tree?" She tilted her head, studying his face and closely regarding the rest of the boy's unique features. "Why is it less common in Amity than anywhere else...?" Absently she reached out a curious hand to touch the male student's ears. It didn't seem to occur to her that she should have asked permission first.

Frost tilted his head, unsure what to say. So it was a student then. Red eyes watched as she seemed to revert to her more school appropriate form. Some kind of plant demon? Monster? His nose just got ‘plant’ really. “If it smells like a tree and looks like a tree one might assume it is a tree. Not to mention I have encountered stranger things in these halls. Some students like to hold their experiments here and there… or leave things growing in lockers that they shouldn’t.” Someone had left milk in the lockers once. Then they forgot about it.
One scent he never wanted to smell again. “And Amity is not like the maul, where the need for appearances is greater. Trees might grow there for looks, but our school has no need for such. That and if they did-“ he looked down at her ‘roots’, “-they are in pots, not in the hall itself.” The touching of his ears just got them twitching flicking back and forth. A brow raised, the wolfos didn’t seem to mind it, only paying minor notice to the action.

"That's good then," she concluded, sprouting a shy smile. "That's what I was trying to seem like; an ordinary tree." At least she knew her disguise worked on some level. She blinked in surprise, her attention diverted by something else the boy had said.
"People leave things growing in lockers?! Oh, those poor things...how can they get enough air or sunlight or water in there? We have to free them! Can you show me which?" Catreena glanced about, trying to remember which way the lockers were. She knew she had passed them on the way in, but how many of them contained living things...?!
"I've...never been to the maul," the plant girl admitted sheepishly. "I'll keep that in mind. Thank you for explaining." She dipped her head apologetically, forgetting to lift it again as she watched her roots form toes, separate into legs, and grow leafy shoes. Next time she would remember to stand inside a pot before transforming.
At the twitching of the male student's ears, she made a high-pitched noise of excitement and withdrew her hands to cover her mouth. "Oh! They move just like an animal's! Are you a wolf spirit, White One? I am a tree spirit myself - a dryad."

Frost stared at the ghoul. She was like he had been once. Just about a year ago actually. “It was a good trick. With some more practice I’m sure you’ll end up even fooling the teachers.” He smiled, tag giving a small wag. The ability to change into a tree, good for if you were in the woods, less so in a school. At her shock to the idea of living things growing in the lockers. “Erm… try mold and mushrooms. They don’t need sunlight and they get plenty of water from the humidity in the lockers. They are fine, I assure you.” Last thing he wanted, or needed, was a student letting out the various stenches. While other might enjoy them, he would not. “Now yes, the maul.” Subject change, glorious subject change. “It’s a very nice place. If you’re practicing it would be a rather safe place to do it I think. Here you might have to deal with gnomes. I- Yes.” His ears twitched again. “I am a white wolfos, we are from the fear of wolves in part. But a dryad?” His head tilted, ears flicking forward. “I have not met one of you kind before. But if you a tree spirit, shall I be seeing you in the ghost dorms?”

The dryad blushed and looked away at the compliment paid her as the wolf's tail wagged. "Thank you. But it's really more of a defense mechanism than a trick," she told him, feeling embarrassed. "The world is such a scary and dangerous place, after all."
"Mold and - ? Oh, that sort! I guess they don't need any help, then," she realized aloud, laughing lightly. "Um...aren't there a lot of other people at the maul...?" Her voice became smaller and quieter as she spoke, thinking of all the other monsters staring her down. She felt she was more likely to use her ability for real there, instead of just for 'practice' or pretend. If that was the case, though, she'd never know when it would be safe to turn back - not until the maul closed, in any case. If it even did.
But now the subject of gnomes had come up. What were those? "What do gnomes do? Do they hurt trees?" Catreena didn't think she'd ever encountered one before. How lucky she was to have this student tell her about them before she was forced to confront one! She wouldn't know what she would have done if he hadn't.
"White...wolfos," she repeated slowly. "I see. That is very fascinating." She hadn't realized that fear could manifest itself into beings. "No, I wouldn't think so. Us nymphs are generally pretty shy and we usually stick to the aspect of nature we protect. Mother said I was too afraid of the world, though, so she thought I should learn more about it. Which is why I'm here." More embarrassment. More blushing. Less eye-contact.
"Well, I suppose because dryads - as a species of nymph - live in trees, we don't really have an astral form. We can't become intangible like ghosts, so I guess we're classified as monsters. Those were the dorms that I was assigned to, anyway." She looked thoughtful a moment. "I've heard that elementals are also considered a class of ghost, though, and as nymphs usually stick to an aspect of nature based on elements, I'm surprised we're not. Strange..."
"Then again, I didn't realize creatures created of fear would manifest as ghosts, either." She smiled amicably at him. "I am called Catreena. Do you go by a specific name aside from your species, White Wolfos? Have you been at this school long?"

Frost shrugged. Defense mechanism or not, it was a rather interesting ability. Though if she thought the school scary.. it would explain why she used it in the middle of the hall. With how many students would run around.. it could be a bit frightening, even he’d admit that. “The Maul is filled with people, not that it matters greatly. Unless it’s giftmas, the place is big enough you can pass somewhat unnoticed.” From her tone Frost guessed the ghoul wasn’t much used to people and when she explained Frost had one thought. She really needed to get out more. “Gnomes however, might try to carve into you, cut you down.. pee on you.” He shuddered. “Vulgar annoying little things. They would indeed, harm a tree if they knew it was a student. It’s best if you just keep your distance from them if you can. Or, can always call someone to help deal with them. After my own tiff with the bastards- ah pardon my vulgarity. They just… upset me with their antics more often than not.” He loathed them. He really did. A sniff, a tilt of his head, Frost relaxed a bit, coming down from his gnome rant. Pity you do not have a more intangible form. I lack one myself, but I’ve found it’s a rather interesting ability. I’ve quite envious of those who have it.” He could float a few inches at best. “It might have to do with the fact you’re a physical being who is one with the physical world. While those like myself are of less physical aspects? It’s neither here nor there I suppose. We are what we are.” A bow, Frost stepped back. “I am known as Frost in the Storm, or, if you prefer, King. It matters little to me Miss Catreena. I’m a third year hob as well, so if you have need of me, I am certainly at your disposal.”

((Sorry for the huge delay, Vamps. sweatdrop Got caught up in other stuff.))The dryad's sage green eyes were constantly drawn to Frost's swerving ears and shifting tail. It made it hard for her to concentrate on his face, where there was also movement in his eyes, mouth, brows, and nose, but a great deal more subtle. Consequently, her gaze flickered back and forth between his bestial features and his facial ones, evidently unaware that it was polite to meet a person's eyes while talking nor that it was rude to stare.
"What happens differently during giftmas?" she wondered, reaching out a finger to poke at his cheek. When he spoke, that area seemed to contort and change shape - very unlike the stiff bark skin of her tree friends. "Does the place shrink?" The idea that Catreena needed to get out more was the very reason her mother had sent her to Amityville for an education as well as social interaction. Whatever their variety, plants weren't the most talkative neighbors to practice interacting with.
A look of horror stole across the nymph's countenance as Frost explained gnomes and she inhaled an audible gasp. "No! Truly? How spiteful!" She frowned. "They sound absolutely horrid. What bastards!" she repeated, more intrigued with the way Frost had voiced the word than with the actual meaning. It sounded powerful. She tried it again. "Bastards!" At the Wolfos' apology, she gave him a puzzled look, wondering what he had to be sorry for.
When the spirit addressed the issue of intangibility, Catreena laughed. "Really? I didn't realize! I've no doubt it would be a wonderful experience. But as it is, I'm grateful simply to be granted movement. Some dryads can't even leave their trees." She stroked the side of his face. Was it soft, like the fur of his ears and tail? "You shouldn't be envious; you've so many admirable gifts of your own."
Nodding at his conclusion, she blinked as he stepped back and bowed. "Thank you for your gracious offer, Frost in the Storm. But, may I ask...why 'King'?"

Ah, she didn't know of giftmas? Well, by next year he had no doubt she'd be well informed. "It's a holiday where people make many purchases for the sake of gifting. And no, the place does not shrink. It becomes crowded is all." She was a curious thing he decided. Not much a threat.. that made her prey. Not that he was hunting, but, it was simply how he filed away names and faces. "And while gnomes are such things, they have their uses." Her touching his face had only a raised eyebrow. "I am fond of my skills, though the desire for more is not unfounded. I am still a youth at the end of the day, in need of much training. I hope by the time I graduate, I can be much better at my abilities. "King is an old nickname. I was named heir in my clan so my pack mates took to calling me the little king... although my rank would be alpha in time." He brushed it off. It was all well in the past. "What of you though?" He asked, curious. "Why have you come to Amity even if it is so frightening?"
