He’d gotten cocky. That last win, his first win, had gotten to his head. After he’d gone to Latora’s home again to tell her about his victory over the Ysali, Cináed had practically paraded around the dormitory with his new soul orb in tow, spouting off exaggerations of how he’d torn the beast to shreds, killed it in mere seconds. These were all blatant tall tales, of course, but Cináed was prone to exaggeration when it came to talking of his successes. But as fun as it was to boast about his victory, it really did nothing to help him.
The next hunt started out much the same. Cináed had his trusty new bow strung tight and well, and was holding it in his hands, ready to strike at a moment’s notice. But he’d been too casual, too sure of himself. He hadn’t heard the dragon coming until it was nearly on top of him. With a roar, the dragon swatted at him and knocked him into a clearing, effectively scraping him up and giving him a few bruises. The red-eyed Orderite had managed to regain his wits after having a moment of panic, and tried his best to aim an arrow at the beast’s head. But the arrow zipped right past the dragon’s horn, the tail simply touching the bone. “s**t,” he cursed, narrowly avoiding a rough swipe of the dragon’s tail. This was not going well. A few more arrows, only one of which hitting its mark, and Cináed had begun to see that this was a lost cause. This dragon was simply too large, had too much endurance and strength, even for his new bow. He decided to take the loss of one arrow and retrieved the others, trying to get out of the dragon’s line of fire as quickly as possible. It managed to hit him with his tail while he was flying toward his last arrow, knocking him off balance. But he regained his footing and launched at the arrow, snatching it up and disappearing into the tree line with an ear-shattering roar on his heels. That was certainly a reality check if he’d ever gotten one. “Well, I think that’s the universe’s way of making me humble…” He laughed softly to himself, nursing a large gash on his arm as he flew back toward the Citadel. At least he wasn't hurt too badly this time.
