Jordun's mother, Laurina Regent, was the eldest of three daughters born to an old, old line of nobility stretching back to Sunderland’s infant years. As the name suggested, the Regents were once a powerful family that came close to ruling the nation, but had since faded into near obscurity. Members of other equally established families would undoubtedly have known the Regents’ name, but outside of the esoteric upper class, they were far from famous. As the generations passed, the Regents became rich in history and little else, until Laurina’s father began to struggle just to maintain the family’s extravagant lifestyle and the vast properties littered throughout Sunderland’s countryside. He refused to find work, believing that members of his stature ought not stoop so low, and the family’s meager fortune dwindled even further until he was forced to sell all but four of his properties: one for each of his daughters’ dowries and one for himself.
Oban Kinross hailed from a family that was much less storied. His grandfather was born a common worker in Aireland and had worked his way up from there. Several lucky turns and a big investment gone very, very right landed him with enough money to move to Sunderland and there join the ranks of the nouveau-riche bourgeoisie. Though they did not have titles as the old and established nobility did, the Kinrosses were possessed of financial cunning and ambition that made them many times richer than many Sunderland nobles by the time Oban took over as the head of the family.
What drew Oban and Laurina together was ultimately what Laurina’s father had deemed the lesser of two evils. The elder Regent was leery of the bourgeoisie, their new money and their lack of proper titles, but eventually, even he had to come to grips with the fact that his family was sorely in need of an income. Laurina was 16 when she married Oban, then nearing 40 and known for his stern and joyless demeanor. In exchange for his financial support, Oban won the Regents’ title and rose fully into the ranks of nobility.
Their relationship was a loveless one, though both managed to stay loyal out of duty to one another. Laurina bore two sons for her husband: Andrus, when she was 20, and Jordun two years later. After that, the already limited physical contact in their relationship dwindled.
Because Oban had taken over the Regents’ household, Andrus and his brother grew up in his mother’s ancestral home in Palisade. The same butlers, chefs and tutors that had served the family in his mother’s childhood watched the two boys grow and molded them into the roles their family stature demanded them to fill. Under their father’s firm and authoritarian hand, the brothers found in each other kindred spirits and got along exceptionally well. They grew up to look quite alike, though Jordun rarely excelled in his lessons like his brother did. Most of his performances were simply mediocre, and he spoke with a mild stutter that no tutor could break.
When Jordun was 15, Andrus enlisted in the Queen’s army, serving two years in a cavalry battalion. Meanwhile at home, no amount of tutoring could have prepared Jordun for military service. By the time Oban’s father passed away (Jordun was 17), the elder Kinross was desperate to conceal the less successful son from the eye of the public. Under the guise of wanting to lay claim on his family’s home, Oban took Jordun and moved back to his old home, leaving Laurina and Andrus to maintain the family’s reputation in Palisade.
On their way to Ennisfree, a certain urge drove him to beg his father to take them through Oldcastle by way of the Kingsroad. That same urge took him into the Wardwood, from which he emerged with a small, pale totem clutched in his hand. He couldn't have said exactly why he had thought it wise to pluck the little totem from the tree, or why he thought it prudent to keep it safely tucked out of sight, but something made him do both.
When he returned to the inn several days later, he caught his father's party all but ready to leave. Oban had watched him enter with gray eyes like flint and said it was a miracle Jordun hadn't managed to get himself lost between the inn and the stables.
A week later at Ennisfree, Jordun awoke one night to a pixie-soft thump in the night and a little bleat.
The bond between Chosen and Guardian was strong and the young deer grew rapidly. Now, five years later, the two are inseparable and understand each other better than anything else. Jordun is careful to keep Idriss off his father's radar, knowing that magical creatures such as her would not be knowingly tolerated.
Possessed of a creative, artistic nature, Jordun revels in exercises of the mind. He has an eye for minute details and a passion for creation, loving nothing more than to make things out of nothing, be they designs or art or anything in between.
That eye for details allows him to be observant and capable of reading people well. He can puzzle out hidden thoughts and ulterior motives with relative accuracy, but for all that, he is anything but a leader. As the second son and the less accomplished son, Jordun has a tendency to defer to others for decisions, especially when he finds himself in the presence of those more experienced than himself. He is good at doing what he is told to do when he is told to do them, and executes actions to the best of his ability.
A readily emotional person at best, Jordun finds himself unable to divorce himself from anything he does. He forms emotional connections instinctively and takes everything personally and is hard on himself, holding himself personally responsible for every failure that comes his way. Unfortunately, he seems programmed to fail at everything his father expects him to excel at, and every display of disapproval from his father hits him hard.

From the beginning, she knew he was what she needed to thrive. He was a serious boy, but only because society had molded him to be that way. She taught him how to loosen up, to laugh a little at the world and at himself.
[ personality ]
A cheerful and pixie-like creature by nature, Idriss is possessed of an exuberant sense of humor that seems to have her laughing at every turn. She can find a joke in anything and rarely hesitates to do so, taking great pleasure at being able to find and spread the mirth.
She absolutely loves to laugh and is a firm believer in the old school understanding that laughter is the best medicine. Her solution to all problems is to mask them with joy, abandoning the worries for another day. Everything has a silver lining, and no silver lining is too thin for her to find.
Her instinct is always to downplay the failures and emphasize the successes. The glass for this doe is never anything less than full, even if it is half water and the other half air. She is a comforter by nature and makes people feel better by reminding them that failures do not count in the grand scheme of things, only the opportunities they present for improvement. Living in the moment is her default mode, and she is capable of moving on in a heartbeat, never dwelling on things any longer than need be.
She is incredibly fond of dancing, and can often be found jigging along with music, real or imagine.

She revels in the knowledge that her twin will always be there to back her up, and in knowing that she'll always have family one way or another. She has taken it upon herself to keep everybody's spirits up and is content to be the "girl" of the family.
