The power here goes out all the time. And by all the time I mean almost every day, multiple times a day, sometimes for the entire day. And by here I mean in the whole town. Tonight I was eating with a friend and the power went out, so people brought out candles and we had a candle light dinner. Everyone here knows that they can be thrown into darkness at any time, so they're prepared for it.
Even when the power is on the internet here is so bad that I can barely load images on a browser. Lots of times pages just timeout for loading because chrome gives up.
But it's really nice here and I can get a full dinner for 4 bucks. A night in one of the cheaper hotels in only 2 dollars! Even though in the evenings when I get online I grumble over the spotty connectivity etc I'm learning to count my blessings.

Where are you? From the prices it sounds like Southeast Asia. In my experience thats about the only place on the planet you can travel for that cheap.

I've been to North Africa, although I would love to go to South Africa. I haven't been to Asia yet unfortunately, although I've made it a personal life mission to visit Mongolia. biggrin I get wanderlust all the time. I'm currently planning a solo 3 week camping trip in Iceland for this summer and a trip to New Zealand for next winter razz

Funny enough, I've never been to Canada, although I've gotten reaaaally close to the border a number of times. My mom teaches students from Columbia and now she's been convinced to visit some day, so I'm going to try to tag along. Where in North Africa have you been? It's not the stablist of places at the moment, but it holds some of the most amazing relics of some of the most ancient civilizations in the world, and I'm not just talking Egypt! I want to see Mongolia too. There was a job in Kyrgyzstan that I would have loved to take, but the stars were not properly aligned. I'd love to see central Asia though. Do you tend to travel for outdoors type experiences? I don't think I trust myself to do a 3 week solo camping trip without dying. Edit: aand I'm going to pass out now. Been fun chatting in real time (sorta)

I live about 35 miles from the border so it isn't exactly a long trip into Canada. xD I've never been to South America although I would love to go to Rio and the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia. I've been to Morocco and Tunisia in North Africa, and I drove through Algeria, although I don't count that because we didn't stay. I've always had a desire to ride a horse on the Steppe, can't tell you why. razz I'd say its about 50/50. I really enjoy being outside in nature, and I think experiencing nature in other countries is just as important to obtaining a true image of their culture as seeing the history in its cities.

I want to travel one day, but I currently have little desire. Roots first, for me.
Being able to count blessings is one of the best ways to stay positive.

Mmm Tunisia! How was it? I want to visit Tunisia so badly, just to see their libraries and things, but I don't know how much is left after the revolution. Blake, I'm starting to feel the need for roots myself, which I never thought would happen. But mainly this is because I want a permanent place to keep all of my books.

We went to the ruins of Carthage which was awesome. The country itself is also incredibly beautiful. We spent a few nights out in the desert in Bou-Hedma National Park and the sky at night was one of the most brilliant things I've ever seen in my entire life.

Who do you usually travel with? Sometimes I travel alone, other times I'll travel with friends depending on where I'm going and if they're interested, and occasionally I'll have connections in a country beforehand and I'll travel with local friends. On the trip to North Africa I flew into Marrakech and met up with a friend (who I met when we were both staying with a mutual acquaintance in London). He took about a week and a half vacation from running his business to show me Tunisia.
