Maergrethe was beaming from ear to ear and humming. It wasn't hard for any onlooker to surmise that she was in a good mood. She had been waiting for this day for over a year now. Her friend, Eva was coming to Hogwarts!
Maer had missed her her dear friend while she had been attending Hogwarts for the first year and had wished she could have written to the younger girl about all the cool things that had happened. Unfortunately that wasn't allowed, seeing as non attending kids weren't supposed to know about everything that went on. Especially if one wasn't sure they had magic or not. It had been a major relief to Maer when Eva wrote her to tell her about coming into her magic a few weeks before her birthday and then getting the letter from Hogwarts.
Due to a horrid snow storm during winter break, Maer had missed her chance to go home for the holiday. Which meant she and her brothers didn't get the chance to go home and congratulate their friend on becoming a new student. At least once the snow had died down she had been able to send a letter via Anda, Liam's owl to her friend Eva.
Maer waited impatiently at the top steps of the school trying to catch sight of her friend Eva among the other first years that were now making their way into the school. She twirled her hair with one finger and tried to squint in the quickly darkening sky. "Oh..where are you Eva?" She wondered aloud, still not having caught sight of her.
Finally..she spotted Eva's dark tangled locks and frowned. Eva hadn't noticed her because she was busy talking to some boy! Maer frowned and stuck her bottom lip out, her hands going to her waist as she glared down at the offending blue headed boy. Well..at least he was exotic looking. She had to appreciate that.
"Eva!" She called loudly down to the girl.

When she got to the train station Eva had searched for Maergrethe, she would've even been happy to see Liam or Leoben, but she saw none of her childhood friends. She had grown up around them, and although she was excited for them when they got into Hogwarts she was sad to see them go off to school without her. The past year took longer then any year before it, she just wanted to get into Hogwarts and be with them.
Luckily she found two nice boys to ride with on the train, and she was happy to say she had made friends! It wasn't always easy for her, being shy and all, but she had hit it off with them from the start.
Walking up the stairs she was just starting to tell Trevor about how she thought she would have seen Maergrethe already when she heard the older girls voice. Before she even turned a smile crossed her face bigger then before. She quickly told Trevor that she would see him inside before turning and running towards Maer. "Maer! I missed you!" Throwing her arms around her friend she smiled. "I looked for you at the train station, and even a little on the train, but I didn't see you or your brothers." she frowned a little but the smile quickly came back to her face. "Thankfully I met Jacques and Trevor, they were good company, but not as good as yours would've been." she said with a laugh.
Looking around she made sure no one was around "Maer... I'm kind of scared." She hadn't told anyone, she even made her mom believe she wasn't, but she was terrified. What if she was sorted into a house that didn't like her? What if the hat was wrong and she was sorted into the wrong house? Or what if when she was sorted into a house and then her housemates wouldn't let her be friends with Maer anymore?

"Eva!" Maer exclaimed running down a few stairs to meet her friend in the middle and welcomed her exuberant hug with open arms. "I missed you too! We ended up getting snowed in over the winter break, by the time the snow melted it was only a week until the semester began. Mum and Dad figured it would just be easier for them to come visit us and bring us the new things we needed. I really wanted to tell you..only the owls wouldn't go out in the storm. It would be nice if they figured out a new way to communicate with people other than owls." Maer ended with a long sigh.
Maer felt a little jealous about her best friend making some new friends on the train but wasn't going to complain. Now that she was at the school they could spend plenty of time together! Even if they ended up in different houses. "I'm glad to hear you've made some friends. It would have been boring on the train without anyone to talk to." She said with a shrug of her shoulders.
It was nice to hear Eva laugh. She had such a pretty one. Man..was it going to be fun to hangout and and talk every day. Oh..she'd have to introduce her to some of her new friends as well! Maer was sure Louvenia and Tristan would love to meet Eva. As would Destiny. Oh and Leo and Liam of course. They had asked her over the winter break if she had been writing to her.
Maergrethe could hear the fear and uncertainty in her friend's voice. She put an arm around Eva and drew her inside the school. "You'll be okay, there's nothing to be afraid of. It doesn't matter what House you're sorted in, I'll be your friend no matter what. Even if you end up in Gryffindor." She teased. "And don't worry about your House mates..you don't have to be friends with them if you don't want to."

When Maer told her about break she nodded. She figured it had to be something like that, no way that Maer wouldn't write her for that long with out a good reason. "Yeah, owls are nice and all but they have to have found a better way by now. A better and faster way. But no worried, we don't need those useless owls anymore, now we can talk all the time!" she exclaimed happily. Oh it was so wonderful being here, Maer was her best friend and when she left for school life just wasn't the same. Sure maybe the two of them wouldn't be peoples first guesses at best friends, but although they were different they had a lot of similarities, and Eva looked up to the older girl.
"At first it was boring, but eventually they got me talking. Although I'm happy to have new friends from now on you and I sit together every year." she said mock scolding her friend with a laugh.
Walking inside the school Maer's words comforted her like only a best friends could. If it was anyone else saying them they would be empty, meaningless, but from Maer they meant the world. "You better! I haven't waited all this time to come to school with you for you to decide you don't want to be my friend anymore!" she said in mock horror. When she said she would be friends with her even if she was in Gryffindor Eva shook her head with a smile. That was her father's house, and her cousins, but she had a feeling that is wasn't the house for her. With out Eva even having to say something about her to-be housemates Maer addressed the subject. With a sigh of relief she smiled. "Oh what would I ever do without you Maer." she said hugging her friends arm.
"Any last minute first year advice that I have to know RIGHT now?" she said with a laugh as she leaned on Maer's shoulder as they walked. Although it was hard being a year behind your best friend, the perks were she already knew everything!

Maergrethe was glad that someone else agreed with her. Sure Owls were more inconspicuous than a bat would have been and were able to blend in and seem natural in pretty much any setting. Still..it just wasn't a very convenient way of communication when weather got bad.
Now if there were a type of magic paper that allowed people to write back and forth to one another now that might work. Like..a magic piece of paper so that if the other half of it got the message that would be a great means of communication. It made Maer wonder if anyone else had that idea before. And if they had then why hadn't she heard of it before?
"Well now that you're here we won't have such a tough time trying to get in touch." She agreed happily. "Though..we'll have to refrain from passing notes in class. I've seen a bunch of kids get in trouble for that." She said with a sad sigh.
Maergrethe was rather glad to hear that Eva's new friends had been able to keep her from getting too bored. She hadn't really wanted her friend not knowing anyone on the train and it seemed like she had been well taken care of. "Oh definitely! I fully intend on that from now on! You won't be able to get away from me." She replied throwing her arm possessively around Eva's shoulders.
Maer couldn't help but laugh at Eva's over dramatic acting. "That's not going to happen Eva Dahling." She replied and patted her friend reassuringly on the back. "I was kidding about the whole Gryffindor thing you know." She said with a small laugh. "I have no clue, probably die from boredom." She replied with a smile. It was nice knowing that she was needed.
Maer thought over Eva's question about what she needed to know. "Well..first of all I should warn you, you'll have to stand up in front of the whole school to get sorted. And when you're given a house, the hall can get really noisy from your house cheering. Other than that, don't let the older students take advantage of you. If you get into my house or your new friend's house I advise you to stick with one of us. You don't want to be walking down the hall on your own. Despite bullying not be tolerated some of the older students or nastier ones do what they can get away with. Stick in numbers or with another kid and you should be fine. Oh..and remember you can have fun. You don't have to study your brains out. If you need help with something don't be afraid to ask a teacher for help. That's what they're here for. Or you can ask me for some assistance. I am a ravenclaw after all."

Eva nodded solemly. She didn't want to get in trouble in class, at all. Though maybe they could figure out a way to pass notes in class without actually "passing" notes in class. Between the two of them she was sure that they would eventually figure something out. After all, if they wanted something bad enough she knew that her and Maer could find a way to make it. "Okay so no passing notes in class, just everywhere else." she said laughing. She briefly thought of a muggle movie or book she had read about girls passing a notebook between each other and writing everything in it. Maybe she would pass the idea to Maer sometime, it would be interesting. Though she knew maybe not the smartest idea. As long as they cast a spell that didn't let anyone else read it they would be fine.
When Maer threw her arms around her she snuggled in. "Don't worry, away from you is the last place I ever want to be again. Last year was brutal." she replied.
When Maer said she would die of boredom Eva nodded slowly making her eyes wide with terror once more. "To die of boredom would be awful indeed. It's settled, you may never leave me." she said hugging her friends arm as if she was never going to let go. Of course she knew that she would have to let go sometime soon, and that Maer would graduate a year earlier then her, but hey, she could pretend for a little that they'd never be separated.
As Maer told her about sorting her eyes got wide with actual fear. She would have to stand up in front of everyone! There had to be more then a hundred kids in there! She didn't know if she could handle all those eyes at her. And loud? She wasn't all that fond of loud noises either. Oh dear, this whole experience was sounding more and more like something she didn't want to do. She listened intently, memorizing all that Maer was telling her. She would tell Trevor some of the things later, though she was sure he didn't need to know them. For some reason she couldn't imagine him getting bullied.
"Okay I think I got it, and don't worry you know I'll be coming to you for help my brilliant friend. You've already helped me so much." she said with a bright smile. "I'm sure that you'll be there to help me have fun as well as with school work." Maer had always been the rowdier of the two, the one who was more fun, but when Eva was around her it tended to rub off a little.

Maergrethe's mouth went up slightly in one corner when Eva solemnly nodded and repeated part of what she said. For a moment she thought Eva was being completely serious until she burst out laughing. "Glad to know you get it. Some kids aren't that smart." she said with a roll of her eyes.
Maer was happy when her friend snuggled into her embrace. It had been so long since she had anyone had done that. It seemed most of the girls here were so standoffish which she was annoyed by. It was like they were all just robots without any feelings. Or just didn't liked to express them. Which was rather sad to her. She supposed they all thought she was over dramatic because she had no problem expressing her emotions.
"Well good. We should get some glue or a spell that will make us stuck together. Then they wouldn't be able to put you in a different House." Maer replied with a thoughtful expression. "Then again..that might bring some difficulties. Like bathing or going to the loo."
Maer let loose a laugh that sounded almost like a bark when her friend's eyes went wide with terror. "Oh it won't be all that bad. You'll make some other friends and I imagine there are some classes that you will like." She realized that the likelyhood that Eva would be a Ravenclaw like her was unlikely. Still it was nice to have a friend that didn't mind the clinging or how she expressed herself. She was tired of not being herself and dumbing it down so not to offend other people.
Maer could see that Eva was actually petrified by the idea of standing up in front of the whole school. Gosh..did she have to go and scare her? She could have thought of a different way to tell her about it.
"If you get scared up there, just think of how all the other kids have gone through what you're going through before. They got through it so you can too." Maergrethe added. "I'm glad that you're here. I've been looking forward to it for a long while now. I have been dying to tell you all about Hogwarts..but you know they don't allow that. When the sorting gets over dinner starts. And then it'll be off to bed for the first years. What with all the excitement they figure you all need a good night's sleep. At least classes don't start until the day after tomorrow. I can take you on a tour of the school tomorrow if you'd like."

When Maer rolled her eyes Eva chuckled. Yeah from what she seen from some of the first year that were on the same boat with her, there were maybe more students then she thought that weren't all that bright. Then again maybe it wasn't their fault, it could just be nerves. Then again from the way that Maer spoke it wasn't just first years that she was talking about, but some of the kids she had met in the last year.
When Maer talked about glue or a spell she could barely contain her laughter. That was the best part about having a best friend. You could be silly, you could be your self, and you could pretty much say just about anything with out the fear of being judged. "Maybe a spell that only we know how to break? So when we have to do things like that we could separate, but all other times we stuck together! Imagine what the teachers would think if they saw us going up to the sorting hat stuck together!" just the thought along made her giggle. Everyone would look at them like they were crazy, though as long as Maer was at her side it wouldn't be all that bad.
"Yes, though I'm jealous of you. As a second year you get to work with magical creatures! I think they should make an exception for me, I mean I was practically raised by magical creatures. I should be in the class." she said laughing. She was joking, but not really. She was kind of disappointed that she couldn't take the class, but happy it was only a year till she could.
Eva nodded. She would just try to foucs on one thing when she was up there, staring at just Trevor or Maer would help her calm down. If she couldn't see them she would look for one of Maer's brothers. As long as she had a friendly face to look at it wouldn't be that bad. "I understand, and yeah I couldn't be happier to be here. My mom teased me about sending me to another school but she knew I would die to be separated from you for any longer." When Maer said she would give her a tour the next day Eva nodded eagerly. "I'd love that! Thanks so much!" she exclaimed.

Maergrethe was glad to hear a chuckle come from Eva. She could tell that she'd loosened the other up and relaxed her enough that she wasn't going to panic. Which was a good thing. A panicked first year was not a laughing matter, least not to Maer. Especially when it was her best friend.
Maer couldn't help but grin back at Eva's response to her suggestion for glue or a spell to stick them together. She had actually meant it, even though Eva probably thought she had been joking. It was rather sad that she still didn't have any close friends and this was already her second year. "That would work," she said with a thoughtful expression. "Though I imagine the Headmaster would be able to figure out how to break it." She said with a sigh. "Yeah that would be funny. They'd wonder why I wanted to get resorted."
Maer noticed that there were kids staring at her and Eva. What was their problem? Had they never seen kids having a good time before? She couldn't help but shake her head in disbelief. These kids must have been extremely sheltered for that to be true.
She was surprised to hear Eva say she was jealous. She had completely forgotten that this year she'd be learning about magical animals until Eva talked about it. "Well..I shall have to see if I can get some pictures of them. Or as the game keeper if it would be all right to bring you around to have a look at them. I'm sure if he knew just how much you love animals he may make an exception for you."
Maergrethe smiled and hugged Eva. "Well I'm glad she wasn't serious about sending you to a different place. It would be so boring without you here! We'll have lots of fun! I just know it!' She exclaimed flinging her arms out wide.
Maer was about to say something else when a teacher approached the first years and started to talk to them. "Oh, you'd better go listen I think the sorting will begin soon! I'll see you after dinner!" Maer said shoving her friend lightly into the right direction.
Then Maer trotted off across the room to join the other Ravenclaws at their table as the great hall began to fill up with the other students. She made sure to get a seat where she could see the sorting area and waved to Eva with a big smile. She couldn't help but hope that her friend would end up a Ravenclaw like her. Oh that would be grand!

Ah, she hadn't thought about the Headmaster in this brilliant plan of theirs. The Headmaster had to be someone who knew just about everything there was to know about Hogwarts, after all he was the one in charge of all the students as well as all the teachers. After think a little she decided that she would not want to be the Headmaster of a school, so much responsibilities and they most likely had a lot of problems they had to deal with every day. "Maybe we could explain to him that we didn't want it broke? That we liked being stuck. I'm sure we could come with with a good argument." She was hopeful, plus if the two of them put their heads together there was nothing they couldn't do. "Well instead of you getting resorted we could just tell them that I don't need to get sorted, that I just belong in Ravenclaw." Ravenclaw was a good house, and if Maer was in it then it was the best house.
Thankfully she didn't notice all the kids looking at the two of them. She would have been extremely embarrassed but also confused. They weren't doing anything wrong.
When Maer said she would try to take pictures or get the game keeper to let her have a look at them. "Tell them they could give me a test so I can prove myself! I bet I know more then some second and third years about them." she boasted. It was true, that was something she had been studying her whole life.
When Maer hugged her she squeezed tightly back. "I would have dropped out if she sent me to anywhere else. And yes, we will have oddles and oddles of fun now that we are together!" she said with a laugh. When the teacher approached the first years she wanted to stay with Maer, but she knew she had to go. When Maer shoved her she made a face and stuck out her tongue before joining the other first years.
The teacher spoke to them for a little, telling them what was about to happen, but Eva was only listening with one ear. She had rejoined Trevors side. When she walked into the Great Hall her eyes were wide and immediately she looked for Maer. She was happy to see her waving and waved back with a big smile. She could do this!

Maer couldn't help but chuckle at Eva's suggestion that they convince the headmaster that they wanted to be stuck together. "Perhaps we could tell him it's an experiment. That might work." she mused it over for a moment with a small smile. It was pretty much wishful thinking that Eva would end up in the same house. It was true they liked some of he same things, but they were pretty different in personality. Maer had the feeling that Eva would end up in a different house so she was trying not to feel sad or look sad about the upcoming sorting.
"I wonder if they would allow that. I shall have to ask. I know you do. I bet I could get you to help me with my homework for that class you know so much." she said with admiration.
Maer relished the return hug from Eva. Man..it had been way too long since she'd last had a good one. She had tried to get them from her brothers but they didn't really do a good job with them. She was definitely going to make sure she got at least a dozen from her friend a day to make up for missing out on them. It was criminal to go nearly a year without any!
"I bet you mum would not have been pleased with that one bit." Maer replied with a toss of her curls. "Oh we shall! I just know it!" She exclaimed with a happy laugh. She returned the stuck out tongue at Eva after she had taken her seat at her table next to Louvenia and her cousin Lothar.
She saw that Louvenia was staring at her in a curious manner; evidently curious about Eva. "That's my best friend from back home, she's a year younger than me. We've both been eagerly awaiting her to get her letter. Though she wants to get into Ravenclaw I think she'll end up in a different House." Maer said a bit sadly.
"Well..you both can still be friends even if you're in different houses." Louvenia told her pragmatically.
"Yes so we can." Maer said brightly, trying not to appear too nervous.
It didn't take too long for the sorting hat to get to her friend thankfully. Maergrethe waited leaning forward eagerly for the hat to scream out the house that Eva was in. She was startled to hear the hat scream out "Slytherin" but wasn't too surprised. There was no way that Eva would have been a Gryffindor or a hufflepuff, her personality wouldn't have fit in either of them. She clapped along with the other students and then made sure to wave and shoot a happy smile at Eva when she ran down to take her seat.
After that, Maer waited impatiently for the other kids to get sorted while she waited to eat. She could hardly wait for the food, especially knowing what sort of delicacies awaited them from the year before. She rubbed her stomach when it rumbled and then laughed when she heard Louvenia's stomach grumble at the same time. "Well..hopefully we get to eat soon, or our stomachs might start a revolt." She told the other girl.
Louvenia couldn't help but laugh as well.
