He would win this time. He knew it. He could feel it in his bones, the subtle hum of strength and determination making his heart pound and his wings twitch as he hunched in the brush of the forest. He was having trouble finding a dragon to beat, however. It was as if they could sense he was actually looking for them, and so they were hiding. That wasn’t how it had happened previously; he hadn’t been explicitly looking for a dragon, simply hoping that he’d encounter one. He tried to think: what could bring them out? He could make a lot of noise, but that would give away his position and possibly put him in danger. He stroked the smooth wooden surface of his bow, the replacement he’d found stashed away in his closet at home after that stupid dragon had snapped his favorite. He thumbed the string, felt it slide along his fingertip, smiling when it pricked his skin and created a welt. He gripped the handgrip tightly, white knuckles tight and poised as he crouched there, waiting, watching.
Soon enough, a soft rustle drew his attention away from the clearing and toward an area not far from him. The tail gave it away. Swishing through the brush, it undulated and smacked various bushes aside as the dragon moved toward the clearing. Cináed smiled to himself. This was too easy. He crouched down lower to stay out of sight, nearly holding his breath as he waited for the beast to come fully into the open. Once it had, he carefully drew his arm back, arrow in place. The feathers scraped his cheek slightly as he let go, the arrow shooting through the air toward the beast. It stuck, not very deep, but the dragon let out a startled roar. He ducked down, eyes wide, as the beast turned on him, before taking off through the trees and circling around it. It was really too bad that his wings, with their bright red feathers, didn’t blend in with the forest. Hopefully he was moving too quickly for the dragon to track him. He fired off arrow after arrow, until his quiver ran dry. While a few had hit, the dragon had swatted even more away or simply dodged them. It didn’t appear to be slowing down. Still bruised from the last fight, Cináed cursed and resolved to flee. There was no way he could take on such a large beast (unusually large for a Ysali dragon) in this condition. Snarling, he chucked a rock at the dragon’s head and flew away. He’d get stronger, heal up, and then kick that dragon’s a**. “Soon, dragon. Soon.”
