Courses in a formal education setting may serve to improve your language abilities. While the value is arguable, the point of arguing over it is moot.

If you want to learn, that should be enough. Look around your local universities/colleges to see if they have any night-courses or similar offerings in the language of your choice.

However if you are unsure, you can do what I did and take an introductionary course in linguistics (it'll cover everything under the sun as far as morphology, phonology, syntax and phonetics).

Also, the theoretical knowledge would be invaluable should you wish to pursue higher level study. smile

My cantonese is getting really[ rusty sweatdrop
I cant read chinese writing, i fully understand canotnese but its just that i sometimes forget how to say a particular sometimes xd and i end up asking my mum how to say it, and my mum says i have got to talk more cantonese or else i will end up being an asian person who cant even talk in her own language stressed
I dunno why that i only learnt cantonese not vietnamese ((cos my parents are from Vietnam, so im suppose to be Vietnamese)) my cousins got taught by their parents how to speak Vietnamese, why not me neutral
But if i did know vietnamese and cantonese i would end up trying to remember more than 3 languages sweatdrop

I think if you have a basic grasp of spoken Mandarin, and a knowledge of 500 characters in both writing and reading then you should be alright. I'm sort of at this standard. I completed a Chinese course all the way to the final year of High School but since then my Chinese has deteriorated because I haven't practised. sweatdrop

I really wanted to study an advanced diploma course in Chinese, one for pure mainland speakers, but I just couldn't fit into my Uni timetable.

i can understand and talk cantonese really well...can read a bit and can't write anymore...i had to take cantonese up until gr. 9 but i didn't care much for it then so i basicly made sure i passed everything with a 50 and didn't bother remembering anything...now that i'm a bit older...i realize how useful being about the read and write chinese is and now i wish i had paid more attention in chinese class

I can write and read some characters. I can't read crazy things with like, 543269 strokes. Dx Well, not most of them. But then again, I forget a lot of characters too... I can read parts of the newpaper. My parents have this habit of testing me randomly... ~_~
My mando isn't great, but I'm much more fluent in Shanghainese... D: Which isn't really helpful.

NO! I polled No, when it said "ILLITERATE", not "LITERATE"! Ayah, I am so stupid and so tired! X.x Sorry!

I am literate.... ish. mrgreen I am completely fluent in speaking and listening, probably only barely literate when it comes to writing and reading. I find it extremely difficult to read a Chinese newspaper, but if I worked at it, I could probably do it....

i think its important to learn to speak, read, and write chinese if you're a chinese...especially when u have relatives who can only communicate in chinese since they don't learn english *whispers"grandma"* ....but unfortunetly,,,i only stayed in hong kong for 6 yrs after i was born so i was not able to even start primary school...not knowing how to read chinese bugs me sumtimes when i visit HK because when we go to Neway,,, i can't read the lyrics on the screen!!

I qoute 'It's important to learn different languages because it'll help you when you grow up' (In horrible accent)
That's what meh daddie said anyways. There's truth in there, I know, I just don't wanna listen. ^^;;
I think it'd be better if you do learn it, with all the pirated animes in Chinese sub only, damn, if only I knew Chinese. -sighs-
