japjainjook hmm the first thing that comes in mind... little chinese eyes.. single eyelid... last but not least... chinese surname~duh~ I would venture to argue that it has more to do with phenotype than just those listed above -- although the genotypic variations between the races (if used in the context of race proper) are very small. So what makes a race? An interbreeding subgroup of a species whose individuals are geographically, physiologically, or chromosomally distinct from other members of the species.

It's hard to say, maybe it's my nose? I look like my mother, who is full-blooded Chinese, but I can't really say.
My sur name is Pang... Pang Gneit Leung. And I'm pretty damned proud of it!

Chinese blood? confused Thought blood isn't always the case.. I've seen many 2nd generation chinese in America deny their that they're Chinese..
So.. My opinion of what would make someone Chinese would be having the blood and heart.
While genetics.. there isn't really any distingushed features that are owned by Chinese people.

If you believe you're Chinese, you're Chinese. You don't need the blood or the looks or the accent or the language or the passport. Just the belief.

What makes me a Chinese...? Hmm... Well, to tell the truth, I'm not 100% Chinese. Only 50%. The other is 40% Filipina and 10% Spanish [Cool, European blood! mrgreen ]. However, I have physical aspects of Chinese descent. My eyes aren't slanted that they look like slits. My eyes have an almond shape. They look similar to the following picture.
I actually love my eyes. mrgreen If there was one feature I'd pick out of all the others, I'd say my almond eyes. =3 Even if my eyes aren't slitty, I still have some Asian aspects. I don't know how to explain this but... Asians have some sort of... face. Umm.. The cheek area. Can't explain! >.< My nose is also not pointy and not big. =)
Saddly, I don't speak Chinese. sad But I'm learning Mando, so hopefully things will turn out okay. My father is actually of Hong Kong descent since he speaks the dialect there, but I took Mandarin because it will be good for business and especially usefull for the career I'm headed for.

I have a small, flat nose that lacks cartilage, and I have small eyes so that when I smile, my eyes are gone. D: My parents say I look more chinese than my sister. o_o
But looks and crap don't mean anything.

Niphredil Ithilmir If you believe you're Chinese, you're Chinese. You don't need the blood or the looks or the accent or the language or the passport. Just the belief. It's really hard to precisely define what makes a genuine Chinese since Chinese have migrated to pretty much every south east asian region. Plus, not to mention the fact that in China itself there are hundreds of minority groups. I'm a pureblood Chinese, with both lines of my family coming from China, but 14 years of staying in Australia have so shaped my features, mind, and attitude that I can't consider myself a native Chinese.

Appearance, language, name. The most important is I think and act like a Chinese.

yks Appearance, language, name. The most important is I think and act like a Chinese. So you're suggesting that we should all dress in olive greens, carry a red book, write in simplified chinese, speak Mandarin in a mainland dialect and chant how bad capitalism is? Please correct me if I'm mistaken. razz

I don't have time to see what others put otherwise I'll have no time to post, but I do agree with Niph-neechan a lot. 3nodding
I personally believe that we are Chinese if we are born into a family that has "Chinese" people in it, as in, decended from the ethnic origin, and it depends, as Niph-neechan said, on the person if they believe it or not. I don't agree with Niph-neechan entirely because I don't believe a white person can say they're "Chinese" if they don't have a drop of blood that's Chinese in them. This is because the word Chinese defines a particular group of race, and therefore, I don't think it "suits" a person without that particular... bloodline.
But anyway, about the poll, I do not believe what we look like makes us Chinese. It's the blood, I guess, for me, and if we have that blood, then the belief... But in all honesty, I'm not so sure about my own beliefs on this topic at the moment... I am still struggling to find a footing in a world where prejudice and separation is still lying under the surface. I find it hard to label myself a lot of the time.

You must think so in your heart. ninja That's something I never knew I'd say. xD But it's not about the looks, the language and those kind of stuff, you're Chinese just because, well, you are. ^_^
