Hey guys, I had a great idea! Well, clearly has you can see from the title. -ahem- Anyways!
I was having a discussion with some friends, and I was thinking.... why not host a Character Critique thread in the Barton OOC? I know we've all had experience with poorly written and designed roleplay characters, Mary Sues, power players.... We have the Roleplay 101 thread in here, why not bring our knowledge from the RPR into the great beyond of Barton Town?
I even have a rough outline of how it would work in my head - it would be run from a mule account, with a short form to fill out so we know who's there to chat and who's actually requesting critique on a character. And whoever joins me would be co-mods of sorts, offering critique to anyone who requests it.
The only problem is compensation.... I wouldn't be able to pay anyone, this is a strictly volunteer gig.
But beyond that, is anyone interested?

I'm glad you're on board. I used my mule to post some more specific information here.

This idea is nice. I agree with Magni.

So, how exactly would we do it? Your mule acts as a liason for us, and we critique en masse and hand them back a succinct review of the character? The person need not know us, nor us them. All that matters is that the character background is given to the mule, reviewed by us, and returned the same way it came.
At least, that is my guess.

I'm still pondering that. I would like to see this project as something both public and private - people can post character profiles in the thread for a public review, or send via PM for a private review.

I like it, but I think you/we all have to be very careful not to come off sounding elitist (which I know we aren't) but I feel like it could go south quickly if someone says something not quite PC, or if someone takes offense personally...

Yeah, that's always a problem, especially for me. I'm often very callous and prone to down-talking to people, and although no one minds too much at art school (where pretentious is the norm and critiques are how we're graded on assignments), well..... it doesn't go over so well when talking to normal people and I really need to watch what I say.
But most of the time, as long I'm careful with my tone of voice in conversation, and my choice of words and punctuation online, I don't step on a lot of people's toes.
Perhaps I should add a disclaimer about hurt feelings....

We have a subforum for critiques and reviews here, perhaps that can give you some pointers/guidelines?

A major problem is that tone doesn't come across when you write things on the internet. Also a lot of people who post to things like that don't want actual criticism (constructive or not) they just want someone to say "OMG THIS IS TEH BESTEST THING I"VE EVER READ!!!1!! or at least give them some form of recognition.
I'm not trying to say you shouldn't do it cause I think it's a good idea, you just have to be careful, which I think you know 3nodding

Agreed. This is particularly true of those that are proud of their creations or don't understand criticism can be constructive. I have a particular problem with pride in my writing, and would not take to criticism well . . . I'd have to calm down and be glad that what I put on the screen isn't what I yell at it.
