I saw this on a Christian debating site that I visit frequently, thought it would be a good topic for us to discuss too.

We never talk about it.
it's usually a "taboo" topic.

Hell is just as real as Heaven.
It's scary to think about...

What do you think Hell is like?

What is your view of hell?
Eternal Torment? Annihilationism? Conditional Immortality? Universal Reconciliation? Universalism?

How do you end up in Hell?

Are you afraid that you will end up there?

honestly I haven't really read much about Hell.
I have read books about people that had visited there, like 23 minutes In Hell

What I read was some scary stuff.

I cant say for sure about what I think it is like there just because I don't know much about it. (part of the reason why I posted this topic)

I do know that once you are there I think you stay there forever, there is no getting out.
I also think that it must be terrible, not sure about fire and brimstone but I don't think it is anything good down there.

If anyone can share a view that would be great... I just don't know a lot about Hell.
I believe it is as real as heaven but we never talk about it much because it gets us out of our comfortable zone, not everything in Christianity is happy we have some dark stuff in it, Hell being one of those topics.

I see hell as a literal place of fire.

That's the summed up answer. heart

Quote:
Revelation 20:13-15 (NIV)

13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

Apparently, "Hell" is not permanent, but the lake of fire is.

Through the parable of the rich man and Lazarus in Lk 16, we see Hell and Paradise separated by a chasm (note: paradise is also known as "Abraham's bosom") . Collectively, this place is called "Sheol", "the Grave" or "Hades". Both the righteous and wicked are waiting in Sheol for a resurrection, afterwards they'll be judged.

The text speaks of two resurrections: some before the 1,000 year reign, some after the 1,000 year reign:

Quote:
Revelation 20:4-6 (NIV)

4 I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony about Jesus and because of the word of God. They[a] had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years. 5 (The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.) This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.

Footnotes:
a. Revelation 20:4 Or God; I also saw those who

Also the verses in my sig (Acts 24:15, Jn 5:28-29) speak of both the righteous and wicked experiencing a resurrection. If the wicked receive immortal bodies, then I suppose their torment is eternal and they won't be annihilated. Either way, I don't want to be them.

Those sealed by the Holy Spirit have nothing to worry about (Eph 1:13, 4:30). The Book of Acts is worth studying because not everyone automatically received the Holy Spirit after believing or being baptized. A repentant heart is needed. In Lk 11:13, we're even told to ask for the Holy Spirit.

If hell is real, I highly doubt it is just a lake of fire. There were many burn sites outside of cities where people would be brought to and thrown in and the threat of being cast into the fire drove real fear into people. Hell, being the place without God, may not have seemed all that bad to some people, so to give it real threat, it was related to the very real lake of fire they could physically be cast in as well. Fear tactics FTW I guess. But in all honestly, a place without God is actually far more terrifying. A lake of fire would be something. From it would come light. You could see and possibly interact with things there. But to my understadning of the theory God is the creator. Lucifer can only manipulate what God has created, but cannon in turn create. I could be wrong though. So it is a place of nothingness. A place without God is likely to be very empty, perhaps without even light or sound. Or perhaps sin is the only thing that fills it. Surely if all the sins of the world were collected in a single place where nothing of God existed, surely that would be hell. At least, that's what makes sense to me. Again, I could be wrong.

I think it's simply a place filled with stuff you hate. If you hate loud noises, Hell will have plenty of it. If you hate Lima beans, that's all they'll serve you in Hell. If you hate nails on a chalkboard, you'll hear plenty of that. It's conditions and such kind of depend on the person. It could be boiling hot or biting cold, but I don't really think that's the part that matters.
In short, it's just a place that pisses you off.

The concept of hell is separation from God... a world without God's hand in it. The word hell comes from the word Gehenna (or something like that) which was a place outside of Jerusalem where trash was tossed out and Pagan rituals were preformed. Even demons hate it there and are to be sent there for punishment (not like how the media says they will rule hell). Anyway that's what research has brought to me.
My personal view? something I strive to not go to >.<

Me and my husband were actually discussing this very thing the every night. He brought up the fact that actual hell could be a person's worst nightmare. Like if a person is terrified of dying in a nuclear holocaust, they are caught in a loop of forever dying in a nuclear war. James, my husband, even suggested that "ghosts" are the souls of the damned that were banished to forever walk the earth. I personally believe ghosts are actually demons...the evil ones at least.

That's exactly how I think it must be. It's a place of unimaginable horror and pain and if God is not present that gives Satan authority to do whatever he wishes to you and he knows your weaknesses and fears. And that's exactly what will be done to you because Satan wants you to have the worst possible experience there. Unique to your own non-preferences.

As for the lake of fire thing, I'm not sure how specific that is. The bible describes Hell with a lot of fire so I'm sure there's certainly lots of it there. I guess Satan is a pyro.
