... any other Tidewalkers owners are welcome to join in, this is just who I remembered off the top of my head!

OOC: I thought it'd be fun to have a little riddle game! Don't post more than once in a row unless the thread totally dies, and remember that the person who is the subject of the riddle doesn't have to be the one that answers--anyone can supply it. Names should all be of Tidewalkers.

The light of Cove's salamander flickers on the beach. The night is warm, with a cool breeze that rises off the waves, and the bellies of the Tidewalkers are full of fresh fish and kelp and seagrass and salted roots, and their sore, tired feet get a break, if they desire it.

"--and she said it reminded her of Rumpled Still-skin," Thousand Blows is saying. "So we decided it'd be fun to make it into a game: making up riddles about the names of our fellow Tribesmen and seeing who can guess what name we're describing first. Fen's too good at it, though, don't let her go first or she'll embarrass all of you."

"I will, too," agrees Fen solemnly. Shout snorts.

"Any volunteers?" Thousand is chirpy, in a boyish good mood, and Waterside, laughing, nods her head.

"Mine is very simple, but you'll have to forgive me. I've only had a moment." She clears her throat.

A creature fiercer than a bear,
A fondly-gotten strand of hair.

“Badgerlock.”

It was her turn. She spent a moment caught between wanting to get the riddle out quickly and spending a bit longer in order to come up with something suitably difficult. Settling on the former, she spoke again…

Caught from below,
the weak drown.

Click to show."Undertow," someone speaks up -- the hoarse voice and the accent give him away even before he steps into the flickering light cast by Cove's salamander. It is Longstride, who slips in beside Waterside with easy familiarity: they stand so close together that their flanks brush one another as they breathe. He has recently returned to the beach... and he has spent quite a bit of time with Waterside. As is usual.

(Firesong looks sideways at Thunderstruck, and then rolls his eyes -- and is met with a tiny little smile from Thunderstruck, one that acknowledges that wry look. There are going to be more foals soon.)

Ignoring the shenanigans, Longstride tosses his head, considering, and then speaks up again:

Keep silent when it's dark,
and celebrate when it isn't.

"Sunsong." The voice is strong, almost stern, but there is humour in her tone when she next speaks. "Is it cheating when the answer is one of your own children?" Sea Bird is smiling as she takes a place around the circle next to her siblings and children and tribe members -- an unusual expression on the doe's normally serious face. But even Gull knows when it's okay to have a little fun.

Her smile fades as she looks out to the waves, just-visible beyond the light of the salamander's fire, and ponders for a moment before speaking:

Fierce teeth bite in a reddening haze,
The culprit lurks beneath the waves.

Fen clears her throat. "I believe that'd be Frenzy," she says, "and that means I can go."

She closes her eyes as if about to launch into a great ceremonial chant, and says:

"There was a doe with a rambling tongue--"

Thousand groans dramatically. "Not this one," she begs.

"Why not?" Fen is indignant.

"It's so..."

"Amazing," Fen finishes. And she begins again:

There was a doe with a rambling tongue
Whose every act required praises sung,
And stories told and gossip spread:
Whose every observation led
To endless rambling on and on
Ignoring every listener's yawn.
She had a endless-seeming need for talk,
And a voice unpleasant, like a squawk.
It was shrill and coarse and quite uncouth
And just annoying, tell the truth.
She drove her neighbors to frustration
With her endless exclamations
And whisperings and whining cries
And laughing, groanings, sobs, and sighs.
Until a buck who'd had enough
Decided, well, her feelings? TOUGH.
He marched right up to the chattering doe
And said she really ought to know
By the way that people fled her sight
Or found a way to avoid the plight
Of indulging in her conversation
And flee instead for isolation
As far from her voice as they could get
They did all this, and yet--and yet!
She never grasped or understood
The way her rambling speeches would
Drive them all to boredom-tears
And make each minute seem like years.
Anyway! The buck, his patience ended,
Decided he'd not care if he offended.
"You're far too talkative!" he cried,
"We wish your vocal cords would die,
And shrivel up like rotten wood
And give us peace, and that for good.
You won't shut up! You just won't learn!
That conversation's all for taking turns,
for listening as well as prattling!
You have to know it's very rattling!
Our nerves have all become quite shot!
If you'd just SHUT UP you'd learn a lot!
You've no friends now despite your chatter!
When you LISTEN you will find what matters:
That friends aren't disembodied ears,
They're the ones you want to HEAR."
The doe was shocked! She was disturbed
To hear that they were so perturbed.
She'd no idea she'd been so frightful,
Having thought her speech delightful.
And rooted to the spot she stood,
Shock has done what none thought could:
Our ears are spared now from her chatter,
A moment's peace from endless patter.
Because--thank god for daring bucks!--
In her shock now she's--

Partway through the grand recital, Shanty, hitherto hanging back enjoying the proceedings at Mudlark's flank, had begun succumbing to an irrepressible smile. Then she chuckled. Then she chuckled some more. By the end, she was in stitches, quiet enough not to have interrupted the flow, but by no means indiscernible. Weaving her way through the gathering - a circuitous route that allowed her to press meaningfully against Thunderstruck for a brief moment - she cried gaily as she moved towards Fen, "Wonderful! Marvelous! We'd have expected nothing less of you! Though, really, Fen, it's a little unbecoming to riddle of yourself."

Her eyes twinkled mirthfully as she skipped the last few steps to the Kiokote's side, "But I'm sure we'd gladly let that slide if you were to produce the 'daring buck' that is to spare us all of your tongue for a while - where is he?"

"Oh, you mean Fl--" says Thousand, but Fen cuts her off with a cheery flick of her tail.

"I've quite recovered from my alarm," she says. Shout, behind her, is still laughing. "All chatter, all the time, now." And of course it won't be. Fen is a jokester, and her bizarre, surreal sense of humor plays out nearly constantly, but she isn't one for much talking. "I have to say, though, that I'm offended that you think I'd destroy my carefully-constructed rhyme scheme right at the end, so strike one. Have another." And she grins. She knows Shanty knows better, and puts her on the spot.

Shanty's curious ears p***k at the hint of a name. Oho is a thought that might have skittered across her mind. Having glimpsed the juicier meat, she files it away for another day and lets the sport of the moment go.

"I yield, I yield," she laughs, "your carefully-constructed rhyme scheme points me to our lovely Thunderstruck," and she spins to bow her head to the doe in question with a flourish.

"I suppose I'll have to go next," she continues at once in a sing-song chant:

"It sings at first alone, but wait: barely half a second late,
another singer joins the set - and then one note becomes duet.
"

When the silence had continued to the point where Mudlark was getting slightly annoyed, the doe decided she might as well answer. Even with the somewhat vague riddle, the answer was always the same. Perhaps the others were hoping Shanty had mixed it up a bit but she knew better. “The answer is Mudlark.” It was never going to be anything else.

The next riddle she had in mind was just as difficult as the first, which was to say, not hard at all. Still, she was glad to take part and she offered the gathered tribe a rare smile,

“I lift my wings and catch the wind,
to leave the world behind.
As I drift above an endless blue,
true freedom comes to mind.”

"Sea Bird."

Much to the general surprise of the group it is Jasper who answers, his voice a chest-deep rumble. He rarely speaks out of turn, so it is even more surprising when he offers up a riddle of his own:

"A quiet, secret place to hide
Until the rising of the tide."

Resurrecting this because HOLY CRAP JASPER SPOKE.

All sets of eyes -- including the pair of brightly-glowing eyes that belong to the answer to Jasper's riddle -- turn as one to regard the buck. And it is Cove himself who steps forward, on his long, long legs, to actually put himself into the spotlight for once. If Jasper knew how cleanly he'd cut down to the heart of Cove's own personality, he might be embarassed, too -- Cove fights the urge to lay his ears back and then assumes confidence he doesn't feel: "Me," he says, and then shakes his head, "er, Cove."

He pauses for a moment, slipping back into the general circle of Tidewalkers, and then offers his own. The glow cast by his eyes dims momentarily as he squints, concentrating:

"Hearing him talk is like stepping on rocks.
If he says something nice it's always quite a shock."
