Dangerous Hunter

Jake groaned.
The last couple of minutes had been a blur.

He left the tent, and, wow, there was even MORE fog. How was that even possible? But it seemed some hunters were tinkering with some runic crap, and it had worked in keeping the fog back... SUPPOSEDLY.

But then, everything happened at once. Someone carrying something, getting dragged away, even Jake too, despite Chester's shouting for him to get away. It was too late as he too was pulled through the portal.

Slowly getting to his feet, Jake looked around.
This... didn't look at Deus Ex. In fact...
No, they hadn't gone anywhere at all.

Taking a step in the middle of... nowhere, Jake heard a CRUNCH under his foot, and looked down to see he had stepped on.
Some... glass bottle, with... liquid?

"The heck is this... a perfume bottle?"
Jake shook his boot, flinging off the bits of excess liquid that clung to it.

Ignoring the crushed bottle and liquid, he took a look around.
...Lights?
He ignored the lights and went in a different direction.

... How the hell was he supposed to get out of here?

Gray. Everything was gray. Sherry sat up. "Where?" She was no longer outside the tent. She knew that much. It came back to her in flashes, fog, being pulled away..."Crap."

"I know," Sherry whispered as she got to her feet. Do you think we're still outside the house?

Armagnac hissed warily.

Nor do I. Fog spelled trouble, and this place was thick with it. Sherry shuddered.

Sherry nodded. When she was younger, they always told her to stay in one spot when lost. She almost laughed as she recalled that. Terrible advice in a situation like this; lack of action would lead to death, that was sure. I suppose one direction is as good as any.

Crunch!

"Hmm?" There seemed to be bits of glass on the ground. Glad I wasn't laying in that. She sighed, then moved on.

As far as she knew, she was walking in a straight line. It was hard to tell. Time seemed slow, the minutes stretching on. Sherry knew her view on it could be due to nervousness, or the fog itself. At least her phone still worked enough to tell her the time. She would have thought she'd been walking for ages otherwise. Walking for ages and getting no where.

I think the fog is playing tricks on me.

Sherry could see a light. A faint, faint light. But it was something. Should we?

Armagnac hissed.

For several more minutes, she walked towards the light. Darn thing didn't seem to be getting any closer, but it was a direction. The fog swirled, and for a moment she lost sight of her goal. When she did see it again, she was quite relieved. Though this time she noticed something. Two. There were two lights now. In different directions. Umm.....what now?

Armagnac hissed, but before she got out a proper response, Sherry noticed something else in the fog. A figure walking in the fog. She almost summoned Armagnac, but the silhouette seemed familiar. A hunter coat? Sherry took a couple quick steps toward the figure (who seemed to be ignoring the lights and walking in a random direction).

Yes! She did recognize him. The ending of her previous encounter with the Death trainee was completely forgotten as joy at seeing someone she recognized washed over her. "You!" she called, hurrying to catch up.

Ignoring the lights, the fog behind him seemed shift and twist... into...
He heard the sound before he saw the figure, and whipped his head toward it.
Who...
Instinctively, he raised the tonfas to defend himself.

The figure started coming into view, and Sherry was greeted with a look of disappointment.
"Oh. You."

He lowered the tonfas, but didn't de-summon them.
"The hell are you doing here?"

Sherry let out the smallest sigh of relief as the other trainee lowered his weapon.

Sherry ignored the weapon's comment and looked at the only other thing besides her bearing any color in this place. "Yes, me." She could see the disappointment on his face. Does he dislike me that much? She pushed that thought out of her head as fast as she could. It didn't matter. They were in a crappy situation, and being alone was not a good idea. So, whatever. It didn't matter if he hated her. She wasn't leaving him here to die alone.

Right. There was no hesitation in her agreement. To the boy standing before her she said, "I have no idea what I'm doing here. I think I was dragged here. You?"

"I'm Sherry, by the way."

He narrowed his eyes at her, acknowledgement, question and introduction ignored.

"Are you stalking me or something?"

"I-Wha--No."

What kind of question was that? "I can guarantee you that I would not be here voluntarily." She held up her left hand index finger extended, "The room with the wolf thing was chance," she put up a second finger, "you walked into the medical tent," her ring finger went up, "and I promise you this was chance, too. Hell, I don't even know who you are!" She crossed her arms in front of her. She didn't like being accused of things she would never do.

"So, no."

Jake scoffed, letting go of his tonfas as they were de-summoned.
Hell. He should of left her in that room. How annoying.

Wha- oh. That pansy.
Jake's lips curled into a small grin. He hope he had gotten eaten.

He ignored Chester and crossed his arms.
"Let me tell you something, Sherry. I'm a hunter. I fight stuff. I work alone. That's all you need to know."

"I--" Any words she might have said stuck in her throat. That had hurt. I'm pretty sure he doesn't like me.

Armagnac made a good point. Surviving was priority. "I know you are a hunter." Sherry could feel her hurt being replaced by annoyance. All she wanted to do was be nice, make friends and help this guy out. "But you clearly haven't been doing this long. Alone gets you dead."

Help him out, and possibly survive this foggy hell.

Alone gets you dead.
Where had he heard this?

He stiffened as he remembered.
Another girl... Eva... had told him this too, when he had first awoken.
Chester seemed oddly silent.

<... she's right. We serve as your weapons. "Partners", if you will. Without us... you'd just be regular humans, mere fodder to the creatures you fought before.>

Jake clenched his fists, gritting his teeth.
He hated this. Hated everything.
This was HIS burden to carry. His alone. HE ALONE had made this decision. So why did others need to be involved? Was he really that incapable? Was he really that weak?

He looked back at Sherry, several emotions clouding his face.
Anger, confusion, doubt.

"I'll manage." was all he said.

Sherry scoffed. Actually scoffed at his response. "Manage? You'll just end up like all the others who never made it home." So many bodies. So many people she never saw again. Sure, some of them hadn't even been alone when they died...but alone was a sure way to die. A group had a fighting chance. And this new kid thought he could hack it alone.

"How many missions have you been on? Do you have any idea about the kind of monsters running around out there?" She gestured to the fog surrounding them. "You'll manage yourself right into a gooey pile of hunter wanna-be."

Home.
Home home home.
He was really starting to hate that word.

"For your information, I 'woke up' not too long ago. This is my first mission. I've already dealt with some crazy insanity wolf, humanoid thing and mantis, and LIVED through all those, while you go and nearly get yourself killed on that wolf. If I hadn't-"

He stopped himself.

"Sure, you may of done more missions than me, but I REALLY DON'T CARE. What I do is my OWN business. If I die from this, then fine. Better sooner than later. It'd only prove I wasn't ready yet. If YOU'RE so scared of dying yourself, why don't YOU go buddy up with some other hunters, because really, I COULDN'T CARE LESS."

He stalked off.
Why couldn't they just LEAVE HIM ALONE?
He wasn't a kid anymore. Whatever happened to him was his problem, not theirs.

If Sherry had fur, it would have bristled. He had practically just yelled at her and now he was walking away? And after everything he'd just said?! Sherry followed him. He wanted stalking? Fine.

"If you hadn't what? Do I have you to thank for my life? That can't be because you 'don't care.' Clearly you don't care about anyone or anything, least of all yourself. But if that's the case, then why are you even here? Why did you put on that damn coat? If you die from this all you are is a worthless piece of monster fodder." She inhaled deeply.

"And maybe you're right. Maybe the number of missions doesn't matter. I've seen better hunters than me and better than you die. I'm sure as hell not afraid to die! It'll happen someday, I know that! But you know what?! I am not going to let you walk away and die by yourself. You know why? Because that's why I joined up. To bloody ******** help people."

He turned around to face her.

"Yeah, you're right. I DON'T care. I should of just left you to die there. What concern would it to me? I don't even know you, and you don't know me either, so why should YOU care what happens to me? I chose this because it was the ONLY OPTION I had left. I have nothing left to lose. Nothing worth protecting."

He grabbed his coat, tempted to rip it off.
This... this...
He didn't ask for any of this.

Strength... power... that was what he wanted, wasn't it?
Being a hunter would give him that, right?
But he was supposed to do this HIMSELF. He was going to prove to himself that he was capable.

And yet... there were others. Always others, getting involved.
Hurt, killed, because he got them involved.
This was his burden to carry, so why did others keep getting involved?
Why wouldn't they just LEAVE HIM ALONE?
Why... why...

"You barely know me, so why... why do you care? Why are you trying so hard? Aren't there other people who need your help more? Just leave me be."

He turned back around, with his back facing her.
Just... why...
He was trying so hard... but why...
Why didn't they give up?

"Just leave me alone."

Sherry listened to everything he had to say, and she felt the rage inside recede a little. Had she been too hard on him? New kid, first mission, and here she was yelling at him. So what if he was rude and mean? He didn't deserve to be yelled at, did he? OK, maybe he did, but still, Sherry was starting to feel a little bad about it.

"I don't know why I care. I just do. You might consider it a problem that I have," she sighed, her eyes focused on the back of his head. "Look, I get not having have any options; not having anything left. But if you don't have anything left to protect, then what are you fighting for?"

She sighed again. "I suppose that doesn't matter, and it's none of my business. But no, right here, right now, I won't be leaving you alone. I'm not afraid to die, but I am afraid of letting everyone else die. I'm sick of it. And I'm sorry, but you are the only person around right now. So tough s**t, you're stuck with me. Consider me selfish, but my goal on this mission is to make sure your arrogant a** survives."

She was quiet for a second, then added, "Besides, apparently I owe you one. Though I can't figure out why, Mr. I-don't-care."

Damn nosy woman.
Jake clenched his fists again.
This... was just like before.
No matter how hard he tried to push her away, she still persisted. No matter how badly he treated her, she still cared for him.
And what ended up happening to her in the end? She got killed, because of him. Because she got herself involved in his messed-up life.
And it was all going to happen again.
Why why WHY.

He turned around to look at her.
Why won't you just give up? Why won't you leave me alone?
He answered her with pain in his voice.

"I'm merely repaying a debt. That's all."

He saw her eyes. Her determination.
It... was just the same.
Nothing he said would deter her.

"And you owe me nothing..." he responded quietly.
