A little something that saddens and amuses me.

It's still perfectly ok to own, buy, and sell assault weapons in America last I heard.

But Kinder Surprises/Kinder Eggs, those wonderful little chocolate eggs with little toys in them? A threat to all mankind. Can't buy or sell them in the US, can't import them into the US, and can't even bring them into the US if you are a foreigner visiting the country.

The government sure knows it's priorities.

It's because of the whole "choking hazard" thing, assuming people who buy them aren't going to realize there's something inside and end up eating it with the chocolate.... which apparently actually happened with the similar Nestle Wonder Ball {which actually was sold in the US}. I guess parents didn't think to tell their kids to open it up first and/or the kids didn't pay attention to the product they were actually eating and just thought "CHOCOLATE!!!"

There's also the whole "small parts" thing... where toys with small parts cannot be sold to children, and again, it's assumed that the kinder egg is going to be going to children who are going to promptly put all the small parts into their mouths and choke to death on them.

The amount of children that have actually choked to death on small toy parts in general is actually very low, though.

Government tends to have a very reactionary way of functioning. Something bad happens and they ban it... or something bad might potentially happen, so they ban it. When it comes to anything involving children, the vote is a landslide for banning without hardly anyone even giving it a second thought. The common opinion of a lot of government officials is that the general populous, adult and child alike, is too stupid to not harm themselves on something if it isn't banned. That opinion is 100 fold for things involving children specifically.

Guns are a trickier thing because of the second amendment. People have been pushing for them to be banned for years, even people within the government. But keep in mind that guns aren't inherently bad anymore than toys with small parts are. It's easier to demonize them if you've never been around a gun and only know it as that thing that bad guys use to kill people.

I wouldn't say that it's widely viewed as "perfectly ok" to own, buy, and sell them, though... because there are plenty of people out there who look down on or get suspicious of someone who does any of those things, and even a good chunk of police officers are somehow not aware that it's legal.

I read the whole article. I just feel anybody over the age of 3 who chokes on the toy inside is an idiot or should have been told there's an inedible item inside.

I agree, but again... government doesn't function in a manner that encourages personal responsibility, and any politician that -does- advocate personal responsibility is labeled as heartless.

I'll be honest: I looked at the title, and thought the thread was about me. confused
----
It's also easier to ban something that people aren't actively fighting to keep. I mean, how many fought the illegalization of the item? How many activist groups can you think of trying to get toy-filled chocolate eggs made legal again? Hell, how many people are even aware they're not?

As for the AW topic, there's the trick of figuring out how to take weapons away from people; trying to take knives and handguns away would be risky as it is, but attempting to take assault weapons from their owners is essentially an extreme version of Russian Roulette for the poor bastards who get the job.

True, hopefully some day civilian assault weapons and tobacco will be banned but I doubt that is happening soon.

You sound like the government emotion_awesome

Why should tobacco be banned? Like you said with the the kinder eggs, if someone's stupid enough to kill themselves on it, then it's their own fault. Why does the government need to take it away from everyone when there are those who could use it responsibly?

Banning things or calling for a ban of things just because you personally don't like it is where oppressive regimes come from.
