This lion of mine is from Venice, but was descended from the lions of Africa. As food in Venice is getting scarce because the water is getting polluted (killing the fish the winged lions prey upon), this young adult male, Enzi, decided to retrace his ancestry back to Africa.
While he isn't so fond of the prey the lions there eat, he has become rather fond of flamingos. While most African lions don't even bother chasing after the birds, a winged lion has no problem and even finds it a thrill to hunt them. Just as flamingos get their coloring from their food, their own coloring seems to be seeping into Enzi.
I'm also questing for him as a god in the B/C shop called Shadows of Africa. However, he's only a god there because there are no naturally winged lions. Here in Carousel, however, it's a different story. In fact, The Thief Lord book/film that partly inspired this character mentioned a magical carousel (called a merry-go-round in the story).
The five figures that could be ridden were a unicorn, a mermaid, a merman, a sea horse (hippocampus), and a winged lion. It seems that a person has to mount the right figure for them (and though it's speculated that those who want to grow older might find a water creature more suitable, nothing is certain) in order for the magic to work.
According to the story, the carousel could make you grow older or younger depending on how many rounds you rode it and in which direction. But that's enough talk for now...care to meet a legend?
