An Unexpected Delay
User Image

After finishing up at the village, the Learanians, along with their three Sentrian allies, continued northwest. They could not expect what was in store ahead of them...

User Image User Image A gangly armed thief scurried up to where a scruffy, strong-armed man was waiting along with several others. "Boss! I'm back, see. Got everything ready, yeah. It's all set up, just like ya wanted. Yeah, yeah."

"Ah, good, it's about time, ya runt!" He exhaled a laugh that morphed into a hacking cough. "And What about Baba? Did you check out what happened to him?"

The stringy thief rubbed the back of his head. "Looks like they brought im' down, boss. He didn't get outta there..."

The bandit leader grumbled to himself. "Ah well, no big loss, I guess! We've still got plenty of spoils, including our little friend here. Aint that right, girly?" He tugged on the arm of the cleric he was grasping and then pulled back of the veil to reveal Rin's scared face. "Clerics fetch a high price on the black market, so you should sell pretty well.. if I don't decide to keep you myself, that is." He laughed again and after he finished coughing, turned back to the the others with him. "Alright, I'm taking the girl back to the fort. The Learanians should be passing through soon, so get ready."

The thief stood straight at attention as if he were some soldier. "Right, boss! you can count on me, see! We'll takes care o' thems, yeah!"

The leader laughed, punched the thief in the arm as a friendly gesture, and took off, pulling Rin behind him. Once he was gone, the other bandits moved into place in anticipation of the group that was on their way.

Rath
------------

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. The incident at the village was a disturbing event, but fortunately hadn't slowed their progress. Rath's company had already traveled for a while. The dying words of the brigand at the village had concerned Rath, though. It sounded like the grunt was saying his boss wanted to take on the army... dealing with bandit thugs was not on the priority list; getting to the rendezvous spot was. However, they had yet to be confronted with any trouble.

As the group traveled down a dirt road through a semi-forested area, Rath narrowed his eyes as he looked up ahead. There was something in the path. He galloped ahead a little and saw that the obstruction was a messy pile of fallen trees in the middle of the road. He looked back at Leena's wagon and then trotted over to Amir. "Our caravan won't be able to cross, we need to remove these trees..." He moved his horse and faced the rest of the group. "We need to move this debris from the path! Volunteers, please come up here and assist!" He turned his horse again and eyed the logs. There was something not right about it... It didn't look like the trees fell over.. naturally.

User Image "Here they are... let's go get em', yeah."

All of a sudden, arrows shot out from the trees. The shouts of bandits rang out as they emerged from their cover on both sides of the road and attacked. A group of them went for Leena's wagon while the soldiers were occupied and began to pilfer it.

"Heh. Perfect, see. Just like boss planned it." Celso darted out from the bushes and joined the fray, throwing a knife at an enemy around the wagon. With their surprise attack, they could take care of this company of soldiers and steal their supplies.

- Kierkess Renvald -

"...So we're going to invade Moredash or what?" muttered Kierkess to one exasperated foot soldier he'd been hassling since the beginning of their march. The red knight was riding along on horseback whilst squinting down at a map he'd torn off some wall in Eyris. There were a multitude of painted lines obscuring a few Learanian landmarks, but that was probably because it appeared that some business or other had been using it to mark their delivery routes for whatever this not-Rausten world produced. User Image

"Sir knight, since I've answered that about a dozen times, could you perhaps answer my earlier question on if you were paying attention to the rousing speech our leader happened to deliver to absolutely everyone?" The soldier was clearly gnashing his teeth together and trying very hard not to simply break formation and put some distance between himself and the ridiculously aloof knight. Meanwhile, Kierkess was tapping his chin thoughtfully and trying to recall that Rath fellow's speech. He'd spent that particular day bonding with his new (stolen) horse by recalling tales of his glorious homeland. He did remember one young lad in the stable trying to helpfully remind him that there had been a gathering for all the soldiers, but the red knight waved him off with the assurance that he'd get the sordid details later (and then promptly continuing his most certainly bloated account of a moonlit meeting with the gorgeous Princess L'Arachel).

After his moment of reflection, Kierkess merely shrugged and looked back at the map. The soldier sighed in relief and assumed he'd earned a few moments of well-deserved silence...and then Kierkess opened his mouth. "Leer-A-nya, right?" This earned the red knight an aghast stare from the footman before he realized that Kierkess was trying to pronounce the name of the country he served. He was spared the unfortunate task of having to reply as Kierkess nodded his head and chuckled. "Haha, I thought so! Not as refined as a certain other place, but the name has its own elegant flavor. Just rolls off the tongue, that. Leer-A-nya. Yes."

Before the red knight could say any more, the procession halted and he looked up from the map with a bit of an annoyed expression. He hated it when someone interrupted his thinking time. However, Kierkess then noticed the obstruction further ahead and rode forward without another thought, crumpling up the map and unconsciously sticking it somewhere under his armor. He ended up somewhere near the front, having produced his halberd along the way and looking to all the world like he was ready to take on the multitude of suspiciously overturned trees.

And then the blatantly obvious ambush that at least half the soldiers had to have been expecting occured, Kierkess somehow being spared from the initial volley of arrows. This gave him three immediate reactions. The first was a sudden fury at the cowardly bandits for setting such a trap instead of picking a fight honorably (which is supposedly a thing bandits do in Kierkess's ideal world). The second was him directing his relatively unspooked horse forward and at the first axe-bandit he spotted coming out of the treeline.

The third was separating that smug little b*****d's head from his shoulders, thus probably giving him the honor of first blood in the impending skirmish.

Fire Dragon

FD was one of those who had come forward to assist with the… trees in road, being quite muscular, even in his human form. He’d done all he could to assist in the rebuilding of the unfortunate village they had passed through earlier but still felt somewhat guilty about not having been able to get there in time to assist more when they were actually under attack. They seemed highly unnatural, lumped together like that, but what was there to fear even if it was done by someone? The group assembled here was meant to act as a highly competent fighting force, after all.

As FD went forward, the arrows started flying and bandits started emerging. They clearly didn’t know what they were getting into, or they wouldn’t be so stupid to do this.

The Fire Dragon quickly transformed into his massive, massively destructive self and let out a roar of the nature that lets you know you’re ********. With a powerful swing of his tail he sent the same trees meant to block the caravan flying into the bandits with lethal force. You could bet they wished they hadn’t placed them there now. With the forest blanketing their enemies, while Flametongue would certainly roast them alive, a forest fire wasn’t exactly desirable. That hardly meant the hiding archers were safe, however; FD knocked his tail against some of the trees on the edge of the forest just enough to knock them out of them for easy picking. Don’t ******** with dragons.

And so it was.

The group had been expecting a skirmish ever since the bandit in the village let the threat of such slip before Amir took his head, as nausating as it was to think about it. How obvious could you get about it? Secluded area, obviously chopped down trees, and nice hiding spots all around...Thankfully they had quite the fighters on their side, one of the troops already striking out without hesitation. Certainly quite the inspiration! Back to your feet boy, take to your horse! Ambush or not, this wasn't any the time to take shelter from arrows! You punish them for every ally that falls!

"They're heading for the wagon! Regroup and take the offensive! I'll head towards the convoy, somebody cover m-"

As if on cue, a creature morphed from human form and unleashed one of the most destructive rampages he had ever witnessed. The trap that was meant to corner them to be picked off had become an aerodynamic force of goddamn nature. Bandits cried before being knocked down, shrapnel picking even more of the forces off on impact. Thank the stars for whatever magic had brought that along!

Wait, that was a dragon.

THAT. WAS. A. DRAGON.

....A dragon that was decimating the bandit troops as if he was just heading out for an evening stroll. A gaze was cast to the side, evaluating the troops who were recovering from the sudden assualt. Some were just as surprised as he, not exactly sure how to react to this sort of thing, while others just called out to their comrades to continue the charge. Was this just another day for them? "...I'm not going to argue against that. But to the wagon!" With this creature taking the front, the convoy could be sufficiently defended before they pushed on.

"Make them pay for even trying to stop us!" He yelled out, before leaping from horseback. His heel was brought down with monstrous force against the nearest out of luck smuck, sword drawn as he wasted no time to get to his blade work. "It's always the same, never just an open invitation with you people!" Spin, spin, spin! Use that blade-work to your advantage, always moving here! "It's always brute force and no presentation! You are so..." He drew back, building up power into his swing before crippling the bandit making a run for the convoy.

"PREDICTABLE!"

Ever since the bandit raid at the village, Oujay along with many other soldiers had their suspicions that their caravan would possibly be attacked by bandits along the trail. The fact that the road was blocked by trees made things a bit more suspicious too. Maybe he was being a bit too paranoid and cautious, but the hero couldn't help but feel that something seemed amiss. Oujay stayed back in his position as many warriors stepped up to assist in removing the trees that were blocking the road. At that moment was when many of their suspicions were confirmed.

Ambush.

Quickly noticing the charging bandit towards his position, the blue haired swordsman threw up his shield to block the incoming axe blow. He quickly followed the parry by drawing his sword out and slicing the bandit across his chest. The bandit let out a yell in pain as he was cut open. Oujay looked past the screaming bandit to spot more bandits were charging behind him. With a simple kick, the bandit in front of him soared backwards and fumbled into one of the bandits that was quickly closing in.

Oujay stood at his position prepared to take on any incoming enemies. He wasn't going to let anyone past his guard and attack the wagon. He gripped his sword and shield firmly as he waited for the bandits to come to him. Luckily he had other guildsmen and soldiers there with him to protect the convoy.

Soon a bandit leaped at the hero in his path and readied his axe for an attack. Changing the position of his sword, their weapons soon clashed with a loud CLING on the trail that had now turned into a battleground.

No one was going to get past him.

[I'll format later, comrades! For now it's time for posting, yes? heart ]

Leena's decision to leave home was one she never would have imagined making. But here she was, in charge of the convoy that would carry all the supplies along with Rath's group. At first she was nervous to have asked the crew member. How could he even trust her? She'd spent so much time shut up in her own walls, involved in her own work.

"But the others were out being brave, so... maybe I should too. Maybe I should make a difference for once." She thought. At the time, it sounded reasonable. It sounded brave, and noble. But now she was starting to regret her decision, because of an unexpected thing.

"A..an ambush?!" she said out loud in a panicked tone. This was bad, very bad. And the enemy was starting to close in, making things worse. Gripping the trusty hammer that had long forged accessories and armor, Leena took a swing. She happened to smack a bandit right on the chest and send him flying. "D...Did I just do that?" She asked herself in disbelief. Her moment of surprise was over in an instant as she held the hammer in her hands again, prepared to defend what was hers and everyone else's.

----

When the battle with the bandits started, Sue moved in to back up her comrades. Her horse moved to step alongside Oujay, as she aimed very carefully at one of the brigands that was on the way. Were these the same ones from the village? It did not matter. The convoy had to be kept safe.

Sue let loose an arrow toward one of the menaces that was about to strike at her axe-wielding comrade. "Be careful, Oujay." she said in her stoic tone before she took aim again. Which one was the leader? She had no idea. It was probably best just to shoot them all.

"Ride faster! We need to deliver the news as fast as possible!"

He had made a mistake. How could anyone, even him, lead this bunch of "mercenaries"? Most of them had very little combat experience. And he personally hadn't worked with any of them. One archer, one stave user, a dark mage, a wind sage, a peg. knight, and lance. No wonder they got her. That wasn't important at this very moment. They should be running into the main force very soon if his calculations were at all correct.

And after a few more minutes of riding his suspicions began to rise. He motioned for the party to halt for the first time since they had departed.

"I'm going to check for enemies in the area. I need you all to be ready for a fight at a moments notice. We don't know what we'll encounter here. Venetia I need you to keep an eye out for enemies on the road I don't want you to leave the group do you understand? David and Venetia I need you two to cover each other if something happens. I'll be right back I'm going to go up in a tree and check to see if I can find the convoy.

He scurried up one of the trees and tried to spot the cloud of dust a convoy would leave in it's wake. What he saw sent him down the tree faster than he came up it. The signs of a trap were all around with the trees down the road and the red dragon was a sign as well. As he mounted his horse he relayed what he had seen.

We need to move, now. About a quarter a mile down the convoy is being attacked. We need to assist however possible. It is likely these bandits are the same ones that took Rin. Your priority is not to play the hero but make sure that the convoy is safe. David and Venetia I want you to give assistance to whomever needs it. Julia I need you to be careful and stay out of range of the archers. They are most likely hiding in the trees. It's what I would do. I'll get to Rath and relay the news. Stay safe and try not to die.

With that he spurned his horse and rode off as fast as possible. In what seemed like an eternity he finally arrived near the battlefield. He left his horse a ways away and ran the rest. Barely winded as he arrived and surveyed what was going on. He was soon spotted by the bandits as they saw an easy target. Hmph he didn't spend his entire life fighting one of the greatest lancers in the world to get beaten by some lowly thugs. He smiled as he drew his bow and let loose an arrow that streaked forward piercing the first one's skull. He notched a second arrow and caught the other one in the chest. The third got a full swing that was easily sidestepped as he turned and loosed another arrow through the mans neck.

Now that the distractions were gone he focused on heading towards Rath. It didn't take him long to see the man. It took him less time to rush up next to him.

"Sir, Lance put me in charge in his stead. I am Prince Innes of Frelia now a current member of the mercenary group Cloak. We were at the rendezvous point when we came under enemy attack. The healer Rin was captured by the enemy. Her fate is yet unknown. I must take the blame for her capture. I had scouted the area we were camping out earlier and said it was safe. "

As he finished the sentence he just barely glanced the arrow flying at him. He swiveled in time for it to avoid his vitals and it glanced his arm leaving a deep gash. Innes drew his bow in a high arc and released several arrows in rapid succession as each found its mark the scream of a dead man followed.

"I have sent my team to help the skirmish as best we can. I'll explain the situation in more detail when all of these bandits have been routed. In the meantime I'll try to keep the archers off our backs."

With that he set his keen eyes to work spotting the archers in hiding.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. An expected attack, indeed, but the bandits did have an element of surprise to help them. Still, it was something they had to walk into in order to deal with it. There was a reason people were grouped around the convoy to begin with.

Rath calmed his horse as the fire dragon transformed and then got out of the way as he knocked the fallen trees into their attackers. "Fire dragon, mind the forest!" Rath knew the dragon had enough sense not to use his breath of fire when they were in a forested area, though it was very easy for him to overdo it and end up destroying all the trees. Unarguably, it was an effective tactic he was using, though.

After drawing his bow, Rath aimed towards the trees and awaited an arrow to fly out. "There..." he muttered, as he let an arrow fly, a bandit archer falling from the limbs a moment later. With his range, he could help handle the bowmen while others covered the wagon.

Just then, Rath heard people coming from behind, where the road had been blocked and quickly aimed at the man in the front. He lowered his bow after spotting the Cloak badges and furrowed his brow. After listening to the bowman, Rath returned to dealing with the enemy archers, but still had an important question for Innes. "...Where is Lance?"

Julia

Already off to a fabulous start.

Lance had already gone off on his own in order to secure the objective, the healer had been captured, and already the main group they were working for had come under attack. She was used to snags in operations such as this, so no more than brief annoyance was heeded towards the situation. At least they were under capable leadership. Though she'd rather not admit it, Lance had put up one hell of a fight. It was a loss that she could face with dignity, even if it hadn't ended in a...not so dignified manner. She still didn't feel right around him without her armor on. But a deal was a deal. Her defeat meant that was obligated to join Cloak. The capabilities of her fellow members had yet to be seen. As far as she could tell, she had been sent with the newbloods despite the severity of the mission itself. ...Unnerving... As for the person he put in charge, Prince Innes as it was, she had no complaints over. Everything about him lived and breathed professionalism, from his stance all the way to the look in his eyes. The wasn't some pampered prince. ******** had seen some action.

"You heard the commander everyone. Saddle up and get on it. Venetia, leave your horse with his own. You're not experience nor trained for horseback combat, Calliope and I will watch your back. You can dismount and we don't have an extra mount as a liability."

Now, grip the reins tightly. Flight is all about the link between rider and mount. It was a link that preexisted birth. From the moment your creation had been a mere thought, your first horse had been entwined with you. It was something closer than blood, more personal than friendship. Rider and mount became one in that moment, one trusting in the direction of the other while the other trusted the capabilities of their rider. Now was the time. Already the skirmish was underway, a creature assisting the group. She had no time to worry about small little details such as a rampaging legendary creature showing its face here, her employer was under attack along with their supplies.

"Fly true Calliope..."

She whispered, gripping her lance before taking the plunge. First came the ascent, making her position known to the rest in the last few precious seconds. Then the Thunderclap. Calliope shot down, faster than most could react as Julia steadied her lance, going through second-nature motions. An axe was brought up in retaliation, Julia reach punishing him for even thinking of such things. It was a clean pierce, right through the chest, the corpse quickly thrown off the shaft with a single motion. Her only concern, the arrows that threatened to bring her down in seconds, were preoccupied with their own retaliation. There was nothing to hold back her fury, the hastened ascension and descent that served to dwindle the opposition. Her aim would not fail, her assault would not relent.

She was out for blood.

Regulus

Regulus sat in the saddle with an expression of sheer boredom on his face. He would love to be playing the violin stowed away in one of his saddlebags but that would give their position away to and bandits faster than most anything, and besides, there weren't too many women here to woo with his music. As the continued along the trail he heard the red-armored horseman asking one of the soldiers questions incessantly. He grinned at the soldiers expense, glad that the man had given up questioning himself and moved on to someone who actually knew something about this world.

When the bandits began their attack Regulus snapped the reins of his horse and grabbed a javelin from the bundle strapped to his back. He charged forward, following Kierkess. When got within throwing range he stood in his stirrups, brought back his throwing arm, and threw the javelin into the group of bandits, where it punched through the shoulder of one of the bandits. He then drew his iron sword and charged into the bandits "Come on you cowardly bandits! Taste my iron! Catch me up Kierkess! I'll kill more of them than you will if you stand there like an idiot!"

It's a TRAP!

... Or at least would have been if they hadn't already been somewhat warned about it with their last skirmish alongside the nomad captain. Bandit intelligence was actually rather poor if this was the best trap they could set up. If you were going to make a trap, you shouldn't leave evidence of your trap-making lying around for people to see.

Once Amir reclaimed his land, Ramla would make sure that the people were properly educated. That, she would strive for. Their people shouldn't be as unintelligent as these bandits. Maybe then they could gain a better reputation amongst the other nations.

As soon as the attack began, something shifted and instantly destroyed the trap meant to stop them. She looked over to see what it was as she began preparing a Wind spell to assist her liege and Amon. The sight she saw left her mouth open in surprise.

It was a dragon.

Wait, dragon?

Dragon! Squee! She had never seen a dragon before! They were so cool looking, with those flaming wings on their backs and raw power in their body for smashing things and that all-powerful Breath they had. Apparently there were other types of dragons that existed though, but this... this was a Fire Dragon!

While she was distracted by the dragon, a bandit had snuck up on her before screaming his customary battle cry. Caught by surprise, Ramla stumbled backwards, flailing with a shriek as she landed on her butt.

"Why you! How dare you scare a maiden!" she said angrily as she fired a blade of wind at the bandit, cutting him down.

So much for this journey into Sentria to go without a hitch. Roy had gone with his Uncle and some of the others to try to move the debris out of the way when they had sprung a trap. Before the young lord could even draw his sword, his Uncle had shifted into his true form. Grabbing hold of his sword's sheath to secure it, he scrambled away from the Fire Dragon to avoid being crushed or caught under him. While he understood his Uncle's reasons for it, a little warning would still have been nice.

The tail smacking the ground caused a strong tremor that could have easily shaken some of the bandits from their nests up in the trees. While picking them off while they were down was a good tactic, it was probably best if someone with range went after them, rather than a close combat fighter like himself.

Fighting archers without knowing their whereabouts was tricky, especially if one didn't know where the arrows were coming from. So he relied on his intuition on when to dodge the arrows as he ran towards Sue and Oujay near the convoy, which... resulted in some near misses. Yeah, someone help Rath with the archers.

"Sue, help your father with the archers! Leave protecting the wagon to the rest of us!" he said as he got close, blade drawn.

A bandit leaped for the young lord, axe raised. Roy swung his sword upward to clash with the bandit's weapon.

Well, time to see how effective sparring with Oujay would prove to be against these guys.

- Kierkess Renvald -

Kierkess wasn't an easy person to get the attention of once he was in the middle of combat (or the odd logic puzzle here and there). However, even he had to pause mid-axe to take a look at the raging dragon that happened to be destroying everyone. Suddenly, the three heads that Kierkess had made roll so far only served to make him feel inadequate. Then, remembering where he was, Kierkess finished the arc he'd been slicing prior to the momentary distraction and managed to slice open his target bandit's neck. The fellow probably shouldn't have been so kind as to wait for Kierkess to finish being in awe of a mythical fire-spewing creature, but the red knight certainly admired the gesture. User Image

A sword-wielding fellow who figured he'd take advantage of the weapon triangle attempted to charge Kierkess just then, prompting the knight (who had to get back into his head-chopping momentum on account of the raging dragon in the vicinity) to take out his sword in the off hand and direct Bedivere backward slightly. From there, it was a simple matter of slashing open the too-close myrmidon's torso. Not sparing the man another glance, Kierkess put away the sword just in time to see Regulus shooting past and killing off the red knight's future prey. Muttering angrily under his breath, Kierkess had Bedivere break into a run and into the mostly intact woodlands where a few archers still attempted to snipe from. They tried to shoot down the big red target heading over to score a few easy kills, but somehow the next brigand that happened to lose his head from Kierkess's rampage in their direction was the cause for some fumbling.

Seeing the expressions on their faces as some attempted to scramble away, Kierkess cracked a grin and decided that he was really starting to enjoy himself.
