It was especially nice in the days of war when soldiers weren't stationed to arrest you for pilfering and mercenaries were all hired to fight on the battlefield. Of course, you couldn't just go wild or else you would have trouble. Even still, taking advantage of the situation in the country was giving Learanian bandits the good life.

Inside a fort in the north of the country, a burly man sat around a table with others of his group laughing and gambling. He was the type of man that punched to show emotion regardless of what emotion it was. His harsh raspy laugh would turn into a coughing fit nearly every time. As they were playing, a dark skinned bandit walked in, popping his hips with every step. The bandit leader watched unamused as his lackey stood before him muttering lyrics he couldn't understand. "Baba... Baba...! Ba-....BABA!!" He threw a mug at the man and then laughed raspily. "The hell you want, ya damn fool? We're playin' here!"

"♫ Mmmm? Mmmm, oh yeah, yeah! That's right, that's right! ♫" He snapped his fingers to a nonexisting beat. "♫ There's a guy here to see ya, boss, says not to meet him would be your loss! ♫"

The leader raised his brow. "That right?" He laughed, which encouraged all the rest at the table to laugh with him. "That's some nerve there! Alright, what do ya say, boys, should I let him in?" The reaction from the table was a resounding yes that made the leader laugh again. "Eh, fine then! Bring him on in, Baba!"

Ishtur took the bandit leader's words as is cue to come in before Baba could bother to go fetch him. "A pleasure to meet you, sir. I'm a chieftain and ambassador from Adliana by the name of Ishtur, and I come bringing good news." Ishtur had to use his words with as much precision as he would his weapons in battle for this kind. Leading bandits to the frame of mind you want them in was like a dance. "Adliana is on your side. Sentria is on your side. Mordache is on your side." Obviously this wasn't all true, but it hardly mattered. What would bandits know of the intricate politics that take place behind closed doors?

"With this war going on, and Adliana now supporting Sentria, Learania is yours for the taking. We plainsmen would not want it; we prefer our land alone. Mordache is much the same, despite their ambition. The only competition you have for taking what you want, what you deserve, for yourselves is the bandits of Sentria. But why should they have all the spoils of your land, when they have their own country to pilfer? But they're greedy, and with Learania doing as badly as they are in the war, it's only be a matter of time before the Sentrians start taking more than what they deserve." Ishtur paused. It was the bandit leader's move. It would be unwise to give away all your news before ensuring someone wants to hear it, and it the right way.

The bandit leader scraped his stubble and then looked around at his men sitting with him at the table only to see that they were all looking at him to see what he would say. "So... uh, what exactly are you proposing I do, stranger?"

Excellent. He was asking what instead of if. Ishtur could work with this. "Just that you take your fair share of this country before someone else does. This just happens to be the best time to do that, is all. The Leranian army is still busy, which means the Sentrians are too. But eventually, one of them is going to win out, and that means problems for you no matter which side wins. If Learania fends off the Sentrians, they'll eventually want to start heckling you all. And if Sentria wins, in means competition. Staking your claim now is not only the best set up you could have for the future, it'll help get rid of your bigger threat: the army. Remember, Sentria winning this war means you win too. They aren't going to punish you. But the Learanians will. But if you act fast, you'll be hurting Learania's chances of winning in the first place. Every village in this country is a breeding ground for future soldiers. Why not fix the problem at its source? Acting now puts everything in your favor."

The leader mumbled lowly to himself as he pondered what was being said to him. "That's true, the army is busy... busier than I thought, it seems. Cripple the country, make their chances of winning slim. Better to deal with my own kind than soldiers." The leader smiled and nodded. "Why, we'll be free to do whatever!" He laughed and banged a fist on the table. "And here I thought all you savages were brainless cultists! Ha ha ha! Thanks for the news, stranger. I'll be sure to make something of it." He glanced over to the dark skinned bandit, who was pumping his head from side to side. "Baba! Get a raiding party together! We're going to have the time of our lives! And eventually all the spoils will belong to us..."

"Happy to be of service, sir." And with that, Ishtur took his leave, a sickening grin plastered to his face. That bandit was fortunate to be a pawn of Elder Shamir's; his death was thus delayed despite the savages comment. Pah! Ishtur was smarter than to fail for something so insignificant. The Chieftan was off to his next destination, where he would taste Donarco's spoils...

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. "We are only here for the night!" Rath called as he passed through the camp. "Do not set up so much that it will cost us much time in the morning." It had been a long day of travel, but they made good time with the amount of people that had come along. With the sun setting, it was decided that they would stop for the night outside a small village in northern Learania. At the rate of their travel, Rath estimated that they would rendezvous with Songhua in a day and a half. The members of Cloak, whom he had sent ahead, would arrive first in the chance that Songhua beat Rath to their location. Their journey was going smooth and according to plan.

While the soldiers and guild members settled in and prepared to eat before resting, Rath set forth towards the village down the road. It would surely have food and water they could restock on that would last until their group entered Estarcia, among other such supplies. The village would be paid very well for their contributions.

On his way out, Rath noticed Amir and his two vassals sitting off to themselves atop a hill. He knew that some people felt uneasy working with Sentrians and wondered if those three were sitting outside of the camp because they could sense it too. Troublesome, but expected. He didn't trust those three himself, so he couldn't expect everyone else to. After a passing glance, Rath continued on towards the village.

Amir was rather conflicted over the whole thing, a stark contrast of his earlier feelings. On one hand, they were a rather effective force and making excellent time to boot. Rath was an impressive commander for his troops, a bit unnerving to be around but Amir only had praise for the man. Now if only the opposite was reality. The term 'Sentrian' had been dirtied and perverted during the rule of the bandits, Drake's term most of all. Despite their best intentions, they were looked down on and mistrusted in the eyes of both the troops and Rath. For the moment, self-isolation would be best to avoid any conflicts with his group as a whole.. He trusted Rath to conduct himself with neutrality as per his duties, he certainly seemed like the type.

You can't just erase a history of distrust in a matter of days after all. All he could do is prove himself along with Ramla and Amon on their own terms as individuals. A gaze across the fire reassured him, the look of renewed determination and strength after a day's rest was enough to lift up anyone's spirits. If anyone could redeem the name of Sentria, it was the group sitting across from him.

"We have a long road ahead of us, but for a first day I think it's acceptable. Soon we'll be restocked and some food in our stomachs for the night. To be honest, I'm excited to meet up with Chief Songhua once more. Now that man knew how to tell a joke!"

The quick smiles flashed to him at least reassured him his retainers would most certainly be okay, at least for the moment. Though, now that he thought about it, Rath was taking quite some time in securing the next day's supplies from the village-

And that's when he spied the smoke rising from the village itself, never a good sign around these parts. It was sad to admit it, but Amir knew a bandit attack at a single glance. He was already starting to feel like he was home again...Perfect. ...And what would mean that Rath would be in this encounter alone, most likely. In that case, there wasn't a moment to lose.

"I'm going to assume you two see what I'm seeing. Amon, Ramla, I need you two to head back to camp and alert the rest of the troops. I'll meet with Sir Rath and hold our position until you can intervene. Now hurry!"

With that, he dismissed the two and mounted his horse to make up for lost time. "Hana, I know you're exhausted from the day...But I need you to hurry, stay out of the conflict once we do. I know you can do it girl." He gripped her reins, steeling himself for the descent.

"Hyaa!"

Rath
------------

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. "Everyone, head towards the southern exit!" All around Rath, civilians were screaming as they fled from the invading bandits. He was doing to best to help the people and keep them safe, but he was only one man. He would shoot at any approaching brigands, but he couldn't be omnipresent and he didn't have time to head back to the encampment for help. He just had to hope they would notice the trouble soon.

"
It's your fault!" a distressed a voice from a young lady cried out. "It's because of you that they're here! You savage! It's because of you...!!"

"......"

"
Please, stop, we need to go...!" an elderly man urged as he tried to drag her along.

"
Don't leave on my account, now!" shouted a bandit as he ran up to them and grabbed the girl's wrist. "Just think of all the fun we can have! Lemme just get rid of your gramps here..." The bandit smiled and lifted his axe.

As the girl shrieked, a swift thunk could be heard. The brigand released the girl and stumbled forward. His eyes rolled up as he hit the ground, revealing the arrow in his back. A few feet away, Rath lowered his bow and looked at the two civilians. "...Get out of here." The old man hastily took hold of his granddaughter and began to run off. The girl looked back at Rath, speechless, and then hurried along with her grandfather.

There were still others coming; more civilians trying to get away and more brigands pursuing them. Rath rushed forward on horseback and swiftly slashed a bandit with his blade, followed by another. Unfortunately, he couldn't stop one of them from felling an innocent man. "...There's too many civilians to keep track of..." As his eyes darted around the village to try and spot people in trouble, Rath didn't realize that his back was open.

"I swear you're all so predictable!"

Now why was it that bandits seemed to just have something for axes? It's like axes came to the job with a nice drink and lemon whenever you signed up for the job. Strangest sign-on bonus really. Amir leapt from Hana, a hand jabbed towards the entrance to signal her retreat once he had landed and dispatched the brigand bringing up a hand-axe. It was a clean cut to the shoulder, leaving a rather deep slash as he planted himself on the ground, a turn to the side and a twist of his wrist brought down the stumbling bandit with ease.

If there was one perk of growing up in a bandit infested region, it was that Amir knew the crude and burly ways they slugged around their axes without fail. All it took was some leg work. Amir's style of blade work involved a lot of movement and archs in his swings, though he had spent quite some years making sure he was able to cover himself during moments where he was venerable. Thankfully, in this situation, he had Rath's keen eye to keep him covered. Speaking of which...

"Sir Rath, I shall assist you till backup arrives! Please watch my back as I shall watch yours, I trust you."

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Rath turned around right as he heard the brigand snarl, moving his blade to intercept the axe, but was met with surprise when he saw that the brigand had already been in motion to attack. He wouldn't have been able to avoid or intercept the blow. Amir's sudden appearance in felling the bandit had saved Rath. What's more, the Sentrian conveyed that backup would be arriving, meaning the others back at the encampment were being informed. But what truly left Rath with an open mouth and blank eyes were Amir's final three words.

An arrow whizzing by snapped Rath back to the situation and the vice captain hastily redrew his bow and shot an arrow back at the archer. "...Do not waste your time concerning about me!" Rath scolded Amir. "The civilians are top priority, we must make sure they get away safely. There are also some houses that have not yet been checked for stragglers, we must do well to visit those. When we can see that the civilians have to fled to safety, we will push forward and drive the bandits away!" Rath glanced at Amir briefly. "...I will trust you for now, as well." Without another word, Rath rode forward and shot at another bandit chasing a civilian.

If there had ever been a Goddess smiling down on Amir, it would have certainly been that moment. Even if it had just been out of necessity, Rath had decided to return the trust for the moment. Certainly a wonderful step forward! Amir sidestepped, bringing down a bandit making a mad dash towards one of the local homes. Rath had a point with the residents of the village, especially since he trusted Rath to be able to take care of himself. Certainly they'd be able to balance out the other and push back these incoming invaders, just some quick foot work and some powerfully deadly aim.

"In that case, I'll take care of the nearby homes and dispatch any unfriendlies I run into. Please use your reach to cover me as I search the homes, make sure they don't get near us!"

His blade was clutched tightly at his side, held correctly as he had done countless times during various practice scenarios. Amir had been drilled in the art of swordplay and riding to the point it was second nature to him, though this was something else all together. His chest was going insane, the grip on his sword adjusted as he fought back the inate urge to run. He was a leader now, an individual to inspire and look up to. Any chance of being flawed were thrown out at his father's death bed. Now, sidestep the downward swing, spin quickly. Don't hesistate for a moment once you thrust, ignore the sickening sound. This isn't practice anymore. That is a human life screaming out, but it's the monsters who do the same without remorse. Don't look back and withdraw your blade, ignore the body hitting the floor. Any tighter of a grip on his blade would draw blood, but he was starting to find a calm after a moment. Here, the next moment erased the last in his mind...Even if it would all come crashing together at night's end. But that didn't matter, a quick dismissive shake of his head dispelling such thoughts as he reached for the handle of the door.

There's work to do.

The camp had been alerted. He did not want reinforcements to be delayed for too long. He knew his Lord was capable of defending himself, but Amon would rather not leave him to fight for himself much longer, no matter how skilled Sir Rath proved to be.

Amon and Ramla led the flight to the village. Amon entered the village and quickly surveyed the damage as he ran, his spear parallel to the ground. He could see that neither Lord Khayri nor Rath had sustained any serious injuries, and they had arrived at the perfect time. Amir seemed to be holding his own quite well. There were still plenty of bandits running about. One of which seemed to be charging at Amon rather loudly from his left side, trying but failing to surprise him as sloppy bandits tended to do...

Amon stepped to the side to meet him and thrust his lance forward, impaling the bandit through the chest.
Amon would never let his guard down like that. Never.

A final scream of pain erupted from his assailant as Amon immediately thrust the body downward and removed his now bloodied lance. If many more bandits had not noticed the incoming group before, they certainly had now. Without sparing another thought, Amon sprang forward and continued to fight. Though his lance did not have the upper hand against axes, Amon had fought bandits of this sort many times before, and he was fairly certain this would not be the last time he fought their ilk. He just had to be vigilant, and keep any attackers a lance length away as he fought to secure the well-being of his Lord and comrades. He knew Ramla could hold her own just fine as well. Though ensuring her well being as she prepared her spells was also a priority, should she need the cover.

Amon certainly didn't waste any time dragging Ramla with him to go alert their camp. And once they had been told of the bandit attack on the village, they hurried back to the battleground. If she chipped a nail doing this, she was gonna be so mad. It was bad enough that bath time had to be cut short before, but at least she got to soak her weary body in nice hot water, even if it was only for a little while. And the soaps were quite nice and pleasant for her skin, helping her de-stress from all the tension that had built up since leaving Sentria.

Only for all that stress to come back.

"Oooh! You guys are so annoying! If you make me break a sweat I'm never going to forgive you!" she fussed, spell tome in hand. She then started muttering an incantation.

A bandit thought he could take Ramla by surprise, but screaming at the top of his lungs before attacking wasn't that smart of a plan. That jerk did almost break her concentration though, so maybe it was kind of a surprise attack.

With a wave of her hand towards the bandit, she finished the incantation and several blades of Wind sliced through him. It was a bit messy with the blood flying everywhere, but at least none of it landed on her! She turned back to see Amon further ahead, cutting the bandits down like they were just paper to him.

"Amon, wait up!" Ramla pouted, hurrying after her friend as she began preparing another spell.

He knocked a few arrows before glancing back to notice that Amir's two vassals had arrived on the field and were helping to fight the bandits. More help was appreciated, they were already beginning to gain an upper hand. Rath had to admit that those three worked well together.

Back ahead of him, he shot a quick arrow at a bandit that leaped out from behind a house. Beyond that man, he saw another hovering over a fallen villager. Rath quickled felled the brigand and rode up to the woman on the ground. After a hasty dismount, he knelt over her and checked her pulse. It was too late to shuttle her back, she was already gone.

Rath sighed and then stood up, looking into the open door of the house in front of him. He kept a grip on the hilt of his sword as he entered the homestead. "Is there anyone here?" he called, attempting to gauge the presence of life inside. There was no response. Turning to leave, Rath happened to glance down and picked up a small pouch he saw. Inside were some vulneraries. "Always useful, I should hold onto these."

Outside, Rath took once more to his horse that waited ever patiently for its master's return. With the Sentrians fighting, he was able to stop and visit houses that needed to be. He was the only one among them on the field capable of reaching the further away buildings before brigands did. But now it was time to keep pushing the invaders back. He could sense the one leading this pack of looters was not far off from them now.

Twist, now kick with the blade at hand. Don't drop your guard for a second here, a second is all that they need. You don't have room to move in here, the last thing you need is- And then suddenly, from above the stairs of the household, came....

AUUUUUGH!

It was a death scream from above, the hulking origin of the shout leaping from the top of the stairs to bring down his axe at the recently entered Amir. Instincts kicked in and Amir leaped out of the way, the door of the home splintering into pieces with one terrifying blow. Big ol' fella this one with a burly axe ripped from the chunk of door it had pierced slung over his shoulder, eyes narrowing as he noticed Amir's survival. Once more his axe was brought up, crashing down where Amir had once been and a wrecked table now lay in shambles. The impact of the leap winded Amir momentarily, the blow to his stomach on what he landed on a bit too much for him to handle.

"...Well it looks like that isn't exactly working out for me, is it?"

A weak chuckle from Amir's side brought his survival [somewhat a pattern at this point wouldn't you think?] to the bandit's attention once more. This really couldn't continue, now could it? A leap away from the blade and another portion of the house destroyed, it would last too long...That's not even thinking about the possibilities of people wounded upstairs, or outside. Time just wasn't on his side her, nor was maneuverability. The house had already been a wrecked mess, but now the destroyed property had made his footing even worse.

"...And running is no longer an option, now is it?"

A dark chuckle, though more of a snort really, from the bandit confirmed Amir's suspicions as he continued forward. Nothing really impeded his way, the bloodlust in his eyes beckoning him further. Amir gripped the handle of his blade, rooting himself as he searched for an opening. At a certain point you're going to have to just stand your ground and make his poor axe-handling work against him. Just plant your feet and wait for the next strike...

There, the axe is brought up as is your blade. Metal meets metal as his strength works against you, parry as you were shown! Flick your wrist like you were trained to do so, push against him and don't give a single inch! Amir gripped tightly, using his heightened bladework to his advantage, the axe crashing down beside him. His teeth were clenched as he brought up his blade, a clean and quick stab almost sending the behemoth crashing down on the prince! His blade was quickly drawn back before the impact, the danger of the moment finally passing.

"...And that leaves upstairs..." Amir muttered to himself, a simple reflex to keep himself calm as he ascended the steps. The door to the single bedroom was pushed open cautiously, a slow creak echoing into the hallway, with his grip on his sword renewed. On the floor below was an elderly man, bleeding out from the wound inflicted just before Amir's arrival. Immediately, Amir reached for the pack at his side, the stillness of the body alerting him to the futility of his actions. He drew his hand back, turning to the side as he struggled to push back the sick feeling bursting from his stomach. A quick gag stifled the feeling as he back away quickly, rising to his feet. He placed a hand on the door frame, stopping when he noticed a bag rested on the nearby dresser. He bit his lip, grabbing the spare bag of vulneraries before shame started to build further

"...I'm sorry I couldn't save you."

A few bandits had turned their attention on Amon now. He had been able to stay in fairly good condition as he fought, with Ramla behind him picking off more bandits with her magic. Good that she had caught up at last, after trailing behind on the way back from the camp. He could see her magic out of the corner of his eye, and hear her light footwork close behind him. It reassured him, and was somewhat comforting. As long as the sound of her fighting stayed close by and consistent, of course.
Through the chaos he tried to see a clear path through to where Amir had been. Now that the pair of vassals had arrived onto the scene, it was time to reunite with Lord Khayri. Rath had gone to aid civilians that needed it, as had Amir, apparently. He had disappeared from sight into a nearby house, it seemed. Ideally, they should be closer to him rather than than further.

Amon reflexively sidestepped past an oncoming attacker and raked his spear across his chest. Though his assailant had been narrowly avoided and killed, his axe still managed to cut the skin above his right armguard and draw blood. He kicked the corpse aside, only clenching his teeth in response. No time to reflect on carelessness. There was a brief respite between the attackers after the pair had done away with a few of them. Best to take advantage of it before more descended upon them all at once. He exhaled loudly to release stress. More ruffians could be seen ahead, so Amon took this opportunity to speak to his companion.
"We must find Lord Khyari." Amon spoke, looking towards the house he saw Amir disappear into. "Are you prepared to push through?" He gestured over to where he had last seen Amir.

Ramla dispatched another bandit with a Wind spell before glancing over at Amon to see how he was doing. Eeeeeee, Amon got hurt! Quick, where was that vulnerary she had brought along for the journey?

"We must find Lord Khyari. Are you prepared to push through?"

As Amon spoke, she was fishing through her baggy to find the item she wanted. With a nod as she passed him the healing salve, she flipped open her spell tome again and stepped forward. "There's still too many of them... don't push yourself too hard, dear." she said to her friend.

"Wind, cut us a path to our liege and the vice captain!" she called out as she raised her hand to the heavens. Magical energy began to swirl around her as she prepared a powerful spell. Several of the bandits noticed what she was doing and tried to interrupt her spell, but Ramla had already finished casting by the time they had gotten close. She then stepped forward with one foot and pointed her hand in front of her. "Blow them all away!"

A powerful gust blew down the street. The bandits were lifted off their feet and thrown back, away from the mage. The less fortunate ones flew into their buddies, bringing them down too, and even less fortunate ones hit more solid obstacles. That... that should hinder them for a while, right?

"Let's go, Amon!" she said, hurrying down the street towards the house their lord Amir went into. They could pick off the bandits as they went, while the enemy was still down and trying to recover from the blast.

User Image At the other end of the village loafed a heavyset man with dark skin that lead the raiding party. He got up and paced, dragging his axe through the dirt. While all the others went to work pillaging, he had stayed where he was and let the others do the work. He had much more important things to do. He may be a bandit, but he had plans in life. He was going to become wealthy, get discovered for his artistic abilities and then be famous! This raid was just one of his steps to fame. His boss didn't have to know he slacked off now and then to focus on the clearly more important things concerning himself.

While pacing, he would occasionally stop and raise his free hand into the sky while he tilted his head back, projecting his unfitting high voice. "♫ I'm gunna GET MY GOLD. Then I will HAVE MY TIME. And I will MAKE IT BIG. Uhuh. Oh yeah, yeah... ♫" He popped his chubby hips from side to side and curled his upper lip.

As the man sang, he was thrown off by the sounds of the fighting and huffed. "Oooohhhh! What is going on...!" He turned and looked out into the village, displeased by the sight of rebels. "All this over so few? Hmph! I will quiet them so I can get back to practicing! Everyone, focus on the resisters!" The lead brigand raised his axe and headed forward with the other bandits.

He spun around and saw a small boy running from an axeman. The boy was well ahead, but then tripped and tumbled on the ground. He tried to get up, but fell short and then clutched his leg. He had likely sprained his ankle. The boy rolled over onto his back and gasped as the fighter was now upon him. He was obviously scared, but he refused to cry. As the axe began to fall, he shut eyes tight and cringed.

The next thing the boy knew, something had yanked him hard. As he opened his eyes, he turned his head just in time to see a sword clash with the axe and then slash across the bandit's chest. Once the bandit fell to the ground, he was pulled up higher and placed upon a horse, in front of the rider. "You're safe now. I'll take you to where the others have fled." That was all the rider said to the boy as they began to gallop away. As they went, he noticed they were passing others who were fighting against the raiders. The boy glanced up to his rescuer, only to see strands of green dancing in the breeze.
