It seems safe to assume that everyone here speaks English, but I'm always curious to hear what other tongues people speak.
English is my first language, and French is the second. I've studied very basic Spanish, and know smatterings from a number of other languages. (Nothing useful, though, haha.)
What is your mothertongue? Do you speak other languages? If so, which ones? What prompted you to learn them? What other languages would you most like to speak?

I speak English first, and enough Japanese to get to the train station I needed. The most basic of Spanish. Only English comes into play anymore, but I still do have the other two I can call mine.

I'm taking German classes and plan on learning Russian. English, of course, is my first and dominant language. I took German because it's a more interesting language (and my school only offers that and Spanish) Russian kind of piqued my interest with one of my roleplay characters. He's a Russian lead designer in an arms factory. Russian history also intrigued me. Assuming he'd still be alive by that time, once I become fluent in Russian; I want to go to Russia and meet Mikhail timofeyvic Kalashnikov.

My brother has always had a fondness for Russian, but I don't think he ever bothered to do more than learn the alphabet and a few basic words. (More than me, though.)
To elaborate more on my first post, my reason for learning French was pretty boring. It's taught in schools in my province starting in grade 4, and is mandatory until grade 9. I continued with it until I graduated, but still barely spoke the language. (There aren't many French teachers to go around, so most of mine barely spoke the language at all.)
As it's one of the official languages here, furthering my knowledge of French just made good sense. I went to an immersion program in university and became nearly fluent (and learned a good deal about how to learn a language, as well).
Now I work in French. As a hobby, I studied Spanish, since it seemed like the next logical step, since it has so much in common with French. I've never really found either language particularly interesting, though. (Very pretty and much more organized than English, though.)
If I wasn't such a ******** slacker, I would buckle down and try to seriously learn Finnish. It's fascinated me for years, but I still barely know the basics. blaugh
I'd love to learn Arabic, too.

My mother tongue is Chinese but I'm quite fluent in Filipino and even more so in English.

kefkadragon I think Russian is sexier. Spanish annoys me. Russian isn't a pretty language to my ears. It feels rough and chopped. @Rhap: Your English is fantastic. Were you raised speaking it as well, or did you learn through school or something?
