Flying Lessons
A RP Event

So this is the day... Professor Drake thought, looking up at the sunrise peaking out from behind the tall castle walls. Today was flight training for both second years and first years... Merlin's Beard, she hoped everything would turn out okay!

Right now, it was the first years turn... I have not the slightest clue why the Gryffindors and Slytherins are ever placed together on any sort of event, Professor Drake thought wearily. This was the group she needed to be careful of--they were always so competitive--and for Merlin's sake, this was just basic flight. It was always the show offs who did the most damage too... No, Professor Drake was not looking forward to this lesson--but if she got through it without a hitch, Hufflepuff and the Ravenclaws should be easy. She could already see the tension between the two groups of students even as they walked in. "Welcome, Gryffindors, Slytherins." Professor Drake nodded to each group with a pause. "I warn you right now--place any differences you have with each other beside... I will not allow any rough housing to occur during this lesson! It'll be a month's worth of detention--excessively painful dention--if you do!" She saw some of the Slytherins scoff at this... but little did they know!

"With that said, I would like to direct all of you over to the brooms," Professor Drake trotted over to her own broom and stood next to it. As she waited for the students to do the same, her eyes darted from kid to kid. No signs of rough-housing yet... She noted, "As some of you may know, you need to stand to the side of your broom--don't pick it up, Heartline--and command: Up!" Professor Drake's broom shot up into her single open hand. "Now, students, have a go at it."

Round One:
- Your student will extend one of their hands (with palm open) directly above the broom and say "Up!" To figure out their success in this, roll a ten sided dice (the success of your actions based on the number of the dice roll is explained below)
- You are only "picking up" the broom, no flying yet (unless you want to be reprimanded the next round)

List of Events:
- Round One (7/21/2012)
- Round Two (7/23/2012)
- Round Three (7/25/2012)

Rules:
- Flying will start on Saturday the 21st.
- Post one form per post
- Have fun and obey your teacher!
- There will be three rounds! These rounds consist of: "picking up the broom," floating about a foot above the ground, and finally, actually zooming about!
XXXXXX Each of these rounds, you will roll a 10 sided dice to determine your character's fate.
XXXXXXXXXXXX1-2, or low numbers will cause your character to have an "accident" of sorts--whether it be a spectacular failure or just stumbling!
XXXXXXXXXXXX3-8, or medium numbers will cause your character, though still rough around the edges, to do their task without much of a problem.
XXXXXXXXXXXX9-10, or high numbers will cause your character to be the envy of everyone else. They're a natural!
- This is a RP event so only people with characters can participate.
- If your character is not RP approved, please don't introduce any strange quirks or family background (until approved), however, you are allowed to participate.
- If you want your character to fail, go ahead and make even their average rolls spectacularly bad--or if your kid has a future in Quidditch (or at least you hope) and they roll a low number, you can make it just a once-every-blue-moon-excessively-unlucky stumble!

Belenus was not an early bird. In fact, he hated mornings. So even though the flying class was outdoors, something he would usually be excited about, the time was a major deterrant. Almost as much as the fact that those bedamned gryffindors would be sharing the class. He sneered as he trudged over to the area the class was to be held.

With half an ear, he listened to the instructions. He already knew the basics of flight, so he didn’t understand why this was strictly necessary. Oh, well, at least he got the chance to be outside for a little while. He went to stand next to a broom –one that looked to be in fairly decent shape for a school broom. “Up,’ he commanded in a somewhat bored tone, his hand imperiously open above the broom, confident and assured that he would not fail in this simple task.

He was not surprised when, as he'd expected, the brooom jumped into his hand. Just as he had commanded. So why, exactly was this class necessary again?

Marcelyn glared at a Gryffindor that stood across from her. She was on edge because one of them had pulled a not-so-funny-prank on her the other day that left her with detention. When the instructor had told the to put aside their differences, she wanted to scoff, but she held it in and did as she was told. She wouldn't get angry. After a few minutes, Marcelyn took her position next to the broom, ready to do as she was told.

With a loud voice, she called, "Up!" With a confident voice. She truly hoped it would be successful.

Feeling the broom make almost instant contact with her hand, Marcelyn smirked and felt herself well with pride. She was only two steps away from taking a flight and becoming a successful witch. She hoped the other steps were as easy as this one.

Louis practically strutted onto the field. Now they would finally be learning something worth knowing! Not that he hasn't sat a broom before (with his mother, a fact he would neglect to mention). He stood among the front of the Slytherin's and for the most part ignored the group of red and gold. Fighting could wait for later...when the teacher's back was turned at least. He knew he'd out preform them all anyways, still seeing one get detention would be rather satisfying.

Eyeing the brooms laid out before them he selected one with straighter bristles. He couldn't wait until next year when he would be allowed one of his own. His mother promised him his pick if his grades were good. placing his right hand in the air above his chosen broom with a flourish, Louis confidently proclaimed "Up!" Fully expecting his command to be obeyed.

Perfect. The broom rose sedately to nestle itself within his grasp. He looked around at the other students, noticing those Slytherin's who'd also had an easy time of it and fixing their faces in his memory. People to possibly curry favor with. That done he smirked across the line at the Gryffindors. The Slytherin's weren't having trouble, would they?

Nerine had anticipated the flying lessons. While the town she'd grown up in was heavily populated by witches and wizards hardly anyone used a broom for travel. It was so small and everything they'd needed was right nearby. No one felt the need to risk a muggle spotting them on a broom. It would be her first time handling one meant for more than sweeping the fireplace clean.

Nerine didn't join in the jostling for the best brooms. They were the school's brooms after all, it wasn't like they were claiming them for keeps. Let the other students bicker and belittle themselves, fighting for the best of a bad bunch. She would play with the cards fate dealt her and succeed anyways. Nerine took an empty spot between to larger students and held her hand above the broom beside her. Though she couldn't be sure what, it felt like a lot rode on the outcomes of today, not only for her but for the children around her as well. Your ability to fly could be said to dictate your position within the wizarding world, just as much as any other magical capabilities.

"Up."

((Rolling Helps...))

Her face split into a satisfied smile when the gnarled and twisted broom leapt eagerly into her hands, fairly buzzing in it's excitement to be off. She only regretted the need to make it wait. Still, better to establish her control right off the bat. With a little mental push and a whispered "Be Still." The broom ceased it's vibration and held it's position at her hips, her hand just resting gently upon it.

Jai was bursting with excitement. Today was the day he finally got to practice flying on a broom! He had heard some second years speaking about it when he first came to Hogwarts and had been looking forward to it ever since.

He glanced around at the other students as he joined them on the field. He shuddered when he caught sight of the Slytherins taking up half of the line. Thankfully they weren't intermingled with his fellow Gryffindors. That would have caused some problems.

Jai straightened and turned his attention to the professor who was now explaining what they'd be doing. He found it a bit difficult with several of his House mates whispering and talking to one another. Didn't they realize they were being a horrible distraction?

Jai followed the professor's instructions and walked over to a broom that was laid out on the ground. He made sure to stay with the other Gryffindors; knowing that the Slytherins would more than likely give him a hard time. He held his right hand over the broom and spoke as clearly as he could. "UP!"

Aizalin eyed everything and everyone around him, his excitement slowly building as he stood with a few of his friends from Slytherin. His face was impassive, as usual, and he easily hid his excitement. His green eyes landed on the broom beside him and he waited for the instructions to be given by the instructor. He was calm and collected, reassuring himself that he was prepared for the situation. Triumph or fail, he was in control.

It's truly that simple, eh? He thought, letting his eyes lose sight of his broom to glance up at the teacher. He looked along the line of students already attempting to say up. Some of them were successful and some of them appeared to be horribly hopeless. His eyes landed on Marcelyn and he smirked as her broom command turned into a success. He returned his gaze to his broom once he felt it was right.

"Up!" He commanded, his expression not changing.

Allowing a smirk to grace his lips, Aizalin felt the broom connect with his hand. His eyes scanned the flying object and, though it wobbled a bit, he had completed the first step without much of a problem. His smirk fell as he looked up at the professor. He was still curious as to how the second and third steps were going to be for him. He had talked to a few of the second year Slytherins about their flying experiences and knew that some of the accidents could be pretty drastic.

Leoben had been pumped for flying as soon as the class date was announced--though his father let his siblings and him ride his brooms once and a while, it didn't take away any of the excitement he felt. This beat Potions class any day! Despite being so excited, however, Leoben nearly managed to be late. If it weren't for Jai, who he was standing by while the teacher spoke, he wouldn't have made it at all. That kid has a good heart, Leoben glanced at his roommate. Unlike most of the other Gryffindors, Leoben wasn't bothered by Jai's bug fettish. In fact, he found it pretty awesome and without a doubt amusing--especially when one of them got out!

Ahhh, shoot. Leoben frowned, he missed instructions. "No matter..." He mumbled to himself, just following Jai's lead to a few brooms nearby. The next set of instructions, Leoben managed to actually pay attention to. When do you ever even use this command? He couldn't help but wonder, watching the Professor lift up her broom.

"Well, my turn now..." He mumbled with a grin, raising his hand over his broom. "Up!"

PostPosted: Sat Jul 21, 2012 3:51 pm
The broom rose up in the air without a hitch and it even settled in the palm of his hand easily. "Nice," Leoben said appreciatively, testing the weight of the broom in his hand. Glancing over, he saw that Jai had similar luck too. "Nice job, Jai," Leoben complimented, patting his friend on the back with his free hand.

Glancing around, it didn't look like anyone was having much trouble with their broom. Wow, and I heard from Tristan that these things usually go horribly! Broken bones... broken brooms... Well, Leoben supposed there was still quite some time to mess up. Either way, Leoben could deal with a few broken bones if it meant he could get to fly around--even on these ancient brooms.

Abigale King only felt a small amount of unease when she walked out onto the pitch for flying lessons, despite the fact she had never flown a broom before. Or even ridden on one, for that matter. She had never been allowed to come near the things, Father's orders. And when Father had an order, you obeyed. Apparently, flying was unladylike.

Abby's nose wrinkled as she glared at the broom she had stopped next to. It was ugly, unlike the one her brother had at home. Did no one clean these things? Disgusting. She looked around at her fellow Slytherins, nodding in approval at any who caught her glance. They all seemed to be doing rather well; Nerine's had jumped eagerly into her hand, Marcelyn's had risen quickly as well, and even though it had wobbled a bit, Aizalin's had completed it's ascent.

Abby tossed her hair back, glaring slightly at the boy across from her as his broom settled neatly into his grasp as well. There was no way she was going to make a fool out of herself when everyone around her were in complete control. She shifted her glare to the ratty looking broom beside her and her face shifted into a sneer. Carefully, but confidently, she raised her hand beside her to waist height, and let her expression calm. Speaking as though she didn't feel foolish at all, and honestly believed the broom would rise, she commanded it. "Up."
