Flying Lessons
A RP Event

So this is the day... Professor Drake thought, looking up at the sunrise peaking out from behind the tall castle walls. Today was flight training for both second years and first years... Merlin's Beard, she hoped everything would turn out okay!

As the second years--the ones who either missed flight training the year before or just wanted another go at the sport--filed in, Professor Drake took a good look at the kids who stood before her. "Good morning, students!" She welcomed them, "I would like to remind you all that there will be no rough housing tolerated today--flying is dangerous in the hands of novices and you better be certain that the punishment for actively working against the goodwill of learning will be more than a simple 'shine the trophies' detention!" She saw some awkward feet shifting in the crowd.

"With that said, I would like to direct all of you over to the brooms," Professor Drake trotted over to her own broom and stood next to it. As she waited for the students to do the same, her eyes darted from kid to kid. No signs of rough-housing yet... She noted, "As some of you may know, you need to stand to the side of your broom--don't pick it up, Langely--and command: Up!" Professor Drake's broom shot up into her single open hand. "Now, students, have a go at it."

Round One:
- Your student will extend one of their hands (with palm open) directly above the broom and say "Up!" To figure out their success in this, roll a ten sided dice (the success of your actions based on the number of the dice roll is explained below)
- You are only "picking up" the broom, no flying yet (unless you want to be reprimanded the next round)

List of Events:
- Round One (7/21/2012)
- Round Two (7/23/2012)
- Round Three (7/25/2012)

Rules:
- Flying will start on Saturday the 21st.
- Post one form per post
- Have fun and obey your teacher!
- There will be three rounds! These rounds consist of: "picking up the broom," floating about a foot above the ground, and finally, actually zooming about!
XXXXXX Each of these rounds, you will roll a 10 sided dice to determine your character's fate.
XXXXXXXXXXXX1-2, or low numbers will cause your character to have an "accident" of sorts--whether it be a spectacular failure or just stumbling!
XXXXXXXXXXXX3-8, or medium numbers will cause your character, though still rough around the edges, to do their task without much of a problem.
XXXXXXXXXXXX9-10, or high numbers will cause your character to be the envy of everyone else. They're a natural!
- This is a RP event so only people with characters can participate.
- If your character is not RP approved, please don't introduce any strange quirks or family background (until approved), however, you are allowed to participate.
- If you want your character to fail, go ahead and make even their average rolls spectacularly bad--or if your kid has a future in Quidditch (or at least you hope) and they roll a low number, you can make it just a once-every-blue-moon-excessively-unlucky stumble!

Merlin's Beard, woman! Quillan glowered at the uppity professor with a rage like no other. Why'd you have to schedule your bloody class at this cursed hour! Look! The sun was barely up and Quillan should be SLEEPING right now, not trying to ride a broom like some rodeo. Y'know, this was the exact reason why Quillan skipped the first flying lessons last year--it seemed like the class got even earlier! Curse my luck, Quillan thought, tuning out the professor as he glanced around. He saw some familiar faces in the crowd--looks like he wasn't the only one with miserable luck...

Man, this woman talks forever! He was just about ready to bang his head into the nearest wall when the Professor beckoned them all to follow her towards a series of brooms, all laid out nice and evenly spaced from each other on the floor. Boo... Quillan thought, picking out a broom in his head (the shiniest, of course). Finally, the professor told them to stand by their brooms.

I saw a movie called Up! with my cousin, Andrew... Quillan thought shortly before raising his hand, "Up!"

Quillan stared down at a limp broom. "This thing must be defective..." He muttered, kicking the broom softly with his foot. "Up!" He ordered for a second time before exasperatedly throwing his hands up in the air. "For the sake of all that is holy, UP you cursed broom!" Just as Quillan said that, the broom trembled a little on the ground. Quillan's eyes narrowed down at the creature.

"You like tough love, I see," Quillan noted with a smirk, softly kicking the broom with the side of his shoe again. "You blasted creature, come up or I'll rip out ever single one of your twigs," Quillan threatened and the broom surprisingly jumped up to him. "That's more like it," he said proudly, clasping the broom in his hand.

Though he had a broom of his own and knew very well how to ride it, Quillan didn't think much of the broom's disobedience. A new master took time to break in, of course.

Dorian stifled a yawn as he tried to pay attention to what the teacher was saying. Why did flying have to be so early in the morning when the students were only half awake? You'd think that there would be more accidents because of that. Dorian was beginning to wonder if the teachers' wanted them to graduate from school, it seemed like they were always trying to sabotage the students from accomplishing what was expected from them.

Dorian glanced down at the scraggly worn broom and lifted an eyebrow. They expected them to use these old brooms? He shook his head in disbelief. No wonder so many people were having difficulty; these brooms were ancient!

He shrugged his shoulders and put out his left hand over the broom and said, "Up."

Moa was actually fine with waking up early for flying lessons, she'd made sure to get enough sleep the night before in preparation. Flying was a completely hands on skill, no books to read, no words to memorize, and even though the thought of going high up in the air with nothing bit a bit of wood and twigs was scary, she wanted to try.

Moa sucked in a big gulp of air and puffed herself up as much ans she could, as though to intimidate any of her fears into submission. She could do this! Last year, she wasn't able to take the flying lessons, since the night before she had tripped down the stairs that lead to the Hufflepuff common room and had broken her leg. But this year, her leg was in perfect condition. And she planned on flying despite her fears.

Chanting encouragements under her breath, she stood rigid next to her chosen broom, an old, but reliable, looking thing. She figured it'd be able to support her when she finally took off. She looked around, ready to go, and spotted Quill kicking his broom. Was she suppose to kick hers too? She looked at the broom a bit warily, before lifting her hand to hover above it. She mustered all her confidence and spoke as calmly and loudly as she could. "U-u, um... U-up."

After coercing his own broom to work, Quillan glanced around to see how everyone else was fairing. A few kids--those rotten gits--got the broom to lift up to them on their first try. Quillan's eyes narrowed--beginners luck. Either that, or a super rich parent who got them a broom and lessons in advance. While Quillan's mother taught him how to ride a broom--often times taking him along on rides--he didn't expect these old school brooms to be so uncooperative.

When he glanced around, Quillan's eyes paused over Dorian. He can do whatever he wants to, Quillan thought, a bit bitterly, before moving his eyes to a new target.

"Hey Moa!" Quillan trotted over to the Hufflepuff girl, happy to see her. "I didn't realize you missed basic flight last year too--Aren't you supposed to be the goodie-two-shoes girl? What happened?" Quillan teased her, tempted to throw his arm around her shoulder but she looked to be concentrating on lifting up her broom. "Don't feel too bad if the broom doesn't go up on the first try--this equipment is ancient."

Vonali stood off to the side and watched her fellow second years try their luck. She was amused that most seemed to have been dragged out of bed. But not her, she was wide awake as she had been last year. But last year her muse had been in full swing and she'd missed the lessons busy working on her song. Granted later that year she'd scrapped it, but that was part of the creative process.

With a raised eyebrow she gave it her own try. "Up!"
PostPosted: Sun Jul 22, 2012 8:32 am

Vonali chuckled as her result was no better than anyone else's. " Great this is going to be more tedious than I thought." Giving it one more go at it before ready to step off the grounds and maybe try another time. "Up!" The broom did jump up, but it swung out and smacked Von in the butt, causing her to stumble forward to land in the grass. " Cheeky broom! None of that now I'd have to throw you in the fire if you do that again." She stood up and dusted grass off her clothes sighing at the grass stains. Oh well no helping it now.

At least it was no longer boring and with a laugh she raised her hand over the broom a third time. "Up Broom!" The broom raised off the ground and swung out again, but Von was paying attention this time and side stepped. Smiling and looking at the teacher she had to ask "Can I keep this one? I like it."

Siianna too was wide awake and it seemed her fellow yearmates were having issues with their brooms. She'd tried to be here last year but had gotten distracted by a lost kitty and was insistent on finding the poor thing for his owner. Happy ending to that story, they'd found the kitty. So she'd counted it a worthy cause for missing the class.

Siianna tried hard not to laugh when Von got smacked by her broom but shook her head when Von asked to keep the thing. A girl like her would like things as difficult as possible. " Broom. Up."
PostPosted: Sun Jul 22, 2012 9:03 am

It worked! Or so Sii thought til the broom kept going higher. Sii tried holding on but when her feet left the ground she let go. With a plop the girl stumbled and fell on her butt. The broom just kept going higher and higher, until it was out of sight. With a sigh Siianna asked for a new broom.

Alright this time no matter what she'd hold on, and maybe swing her leg up. Granted she'd get in trouble for riding the broom, but at least she wouldn't have to get a new one. "Up." Luckily for her the broom slowly lifted to her outstretched hand and waited. Siianna released the breath she'd been holding.

Moa's broom rolled over slightly on the ground. She smiled down at it slightly, knowing that while it didn't do what it was suppose to, it also hadn't attacked her yet. She looked up at Quill and gave him a small smile.

"H-hello Quill." She kicked her foot at the ground a bit shyly. "I didn't skip, uh, last year, that is." She looked back at the broom and whispered it an 'up' at it, but it didn't do anything this time.

"There was an, um... a problem. I.. I ended up in the, um, the infirmary." Moa smiled down at the broom. "B-but, I'm fine th-this year. Up please?" The broomstick shook slightly and rose a foot into the air before dropping.

"I don't think that... that it, um, likes me." She shook her head and stared down at the broom and tried to show the broom that she was confidant, so maybe it would recognized that she was it's master, at least for the day. "Up." The broom rose a foot and a half, before dropping again. Not wanting to spend the whole lesson trying to coax the broom into the air, she grabbed for it before it landed again. She held the broom to her chest and looked at Quill warily, as though he would report her wrongdoing.

"I-I don't want to be... left behind. W-when the, um... when we start to, ah, to fly." She whispered to him, feeling terrible about cheating.

Professor Drake grinned Darix asked to keep the broom, "School property," She responded, shaking her head with amusement. "Though feel free to pluck a straw or something if the bruises aren't enough to remember him by," Professor Drake patted the Slytherin on the back.

Glancing around some, Professor Drake's eyes narrowed. "Vance! Don't think I didn't see that. Set your broom down and try again," She barked, crossing her arms. Jeez, trying to take the easy way... After finishing her rounds, she saw that most of the kids managed to pick up the broom. "Good."

Without any further pause, Professor Drake started the second part of her instructions. "The next thing we're going to do is just hover a few feet off the ground..." They seem to be doing pretty well so far... "What you need to do is place the broom in between your legs and then push off the ground with both feet--" Professor Drake demonstrated, wedging her broom between her legs and then kicking off the ground just a few feet so she was hovering. "Feel free to tuck your feet near the broom's end but I do not want anyone higher than where I am now!" Professor Drake allowed her broom to rise up off the ground about three feet. "Got it, everyone?--Good. Now have a shot and BE CAREFUL."

Round Two:
- Your student is going to be placing the broom in between their legs and then kicking off the ground using both feet. They will then hover over where they were standing.
-They are not allowed to actually fly yet. (Remember to roll, by the way. The rolling rules still apply)

List of Events:
- Round One (7/21/2012)
- Round Two (7/23/2012)
- Round Three (7/25/2012)

Vonali snickered at the teacher. For a Gryffindor she wasn't too bad. With a giggle Von straddled her broom. " You heard her. Mess up again and I'm gonna pluck your straw." With that small talk Von pushed herself and the broom off the ground.
PostPosted: Tue Jul 24, 2012 10:52 am

Vonali's broom wavered and for a moment she thought the broom was going to dump her on the ground. But her talking before hand must have worked cause in a few moments it righted itself. " Awesome!" With a smirk she looked at her fellow year mates from the air.

Siianna watched mildly amused as her year mates tried their hand. Her attention was drawn to the teacher as she gave them their next set of directions. With a cautious eye she sat on the broom, wary it'd try to take off with her. After a moment she gave it a small push.
