Okay so, I don't know what reactions might be to a thread of this nature, but... sweatdrop Anyways, we can all sing praises of Tales of Symphonia all day long. Easily... But there must be something about the game that you just can't stand for the life of you. Perhaps something you just plain question the existance of in-game. Something about the game that you feel the developers just completely dropped the ball on.

If so, this is the place to do it. Do you have the courage to bash your favorite game?

I'm certain that there are a few things people could nit-pick on with the game. For me, I have a few things I didn't like. I was a bit disappointed with not seeing the other characters (aside from Lloyd and Colette) in any anime cutscenes. This is not counting the PS2 version of the game.

Another is having Zelos killed off if you pick the Kratos path. As much I do like Zelos, I don't find his death scene really sad at all. ^.^; It gave that feel of 'Oh no! This guy's dead! But later on, he comes back!' sorta deal. Though most death scenes don't really phase me...Only a few had managed to get me teary-eyed.

After giving it further thought, one of the things that really got on my nerves was the lack of free run like you see in Abyss and Radiant Mythology. With certain enemies (especially Abyssion) I would get stuck in a spot I didn't want to be in and either it was too risky to jump over the opponent or I simply couldn't do so due to their height. Most of the time it prevented me from distracting enemies from my mages and healers.

There is only one thing in the Tales of Universe that gets on my nerves, and his name is Richter. Though, the thing about him being in love with Aster kind of gave him some brownie points.... But, he was kind of a jerk and treated Emil like crap throughout most of the game. It kind of pissed me off.

And, I agree with Sirea. The lack of characters in the anime cutscenes got on my nerves, too. I mean, everyone played their own part.

I think the concept of free-run wasn't introduced until Abyss came out, but yeah...I have played Dawn before I have played Symphonia so it took me a bit to get used to not having free runs during battle. I did have moments where I kept wishing that they should've put free-run in Symphonia as well. xd

There were times I have difficulty taking some scenarios of the game seriously due to the characters being chibified. xd Of course I'm not one to judge a game by graphics.

Ah, Richter. To give him some credit, he does have a catchy theme song. XD

Mhm, exactly.. My post was originally going to say "due to the not yet developed Linear Motion Battle System" (yes I have that memorized) but I decided to look it up to make sure on the aselia wikia and found it it's just the lack of free run.

Chocolat.
Oh, and the all-too-common clipping issues.

I remember being so happy when I first found out about Free Run!

Clipping issues? I played through the game plenty of times and never had any clipping issues...

I have kinda lost interest in Symphonia, sure its a very good RPG and I still pop it in my Gamecube from time to time; but I have played so many different games and different systems that I no longer think it is a "amazing" as I once thought it was, but I would still recommend the game to people looking for good RPG's. sweatdrop

Only things I didn't like (not hated mind you, just didn't like) were Chocolat and Zelos. Damnit stereotypical s**t like this ain't funny. I mean, let's look at how others handled the mommy isse, shall we? Lloyd became a badass swordsman raised by a dwarf who stands up for his beliefs. Genis became a kickass battle mage with a brain bigger than an encyclopedia set. Raine became a teacher and mega heal machine, and in some ways dabbles in archeology and science. What does Zelos do? Become a womanizer and a sub-par replacement for Kratos. Hell, Kratos had a better characterization before he betrayed the group than Zelos got throughout the game.

Sorry, but I really don't like how Zelos was characterized. If anyone disagrees, you have the right to that opinion, but I'm not likely to believe you.

Am I using the right term here? By that I mean when people's hair, Lloyd's streaming white ribbon things that he wears (what the heck are those called again?), weapons, etc. are partially inside or through something else. For example, Lloyd's aforementioned article of clothing sometimes went through his sword sheathes with me, and I seem to remember Colette's hair going through her own clothing at times.

I'm okay with Zelos because I find him amusing at times (I'm easily amused- "Ow, my precious foot!" and even "Ugh, I am so sad now!" amused me. Yep.), but I agree that Kratos is better. Actually, I used to dislike Zelos... Maybe it's the fact that I've played through this game so much that the characters are like old friends of sorts. That's the beauty of RPGs like this. /irrelevant but true?

Ohh... Those kind of clipping issues... I thought you meant actually being able to walk through objects to get to places you aren't supposed to. But yeah, you're using the right term. I just though you were using it another way. But yeah, I do remember those issues.

I'll always love Symphonia, but I won't deny that the times moving on tend to have this effect. 3nodding I kind of have a similar feeling when it comes to some other games, but that's another subject.

Now back to the subject at hand. As much as Kratos is my favorite character, it has always frustrated me that he's written to leave at the end. I personally think it would have illustrated a LOT better his inward changes and how much he learned from Lloyd if he pushed aside his self-defeating thoughts, took his chances, and stayed back to make up for all that lost time with his son.

...Okay, so there needs to be someone or some way to get rid of all the Exspheres in Derris-Kharlan. Couldn't they figure out some way for him to come back after that's all done? Couldn't they even have someone else do it, like those angels up there?

The frustration almost makes me want to try my hand at writing fix-it fic for all that. >3>

If we're talking in terms of graphics here...I'm usually not one to judge on graphics either but sometimes I find the movement of the characters in cutscenes kind of...awkward. Like the time that....I think when Altessa took a shot that was meant for Presea? How the way he was animated had him kinda sliding into the way of the attack. Things like that kinda ruin an otherwise serious moment for me. xd
