Name: Jonah René Sinclair
Nickname: Sometimes his mom and little sister call him “Jony.” He’s not particularly fond of it.
Age: 19
Birthday: September 8th (1993)
Sign: Virgo
Gemstone: Carnelian
Blood Type: AB+
Fav. Food: Ramen, Chef Boy-Ar-Dee, sandwiches, canned soups and stews, instant rice, Hot Pockets, microwaveable dinners, etc. He fails at cooking for himself and doesn’t like to waste much time trying, so he likes anything he can make and eat quickly. Even then he’s more likely to snack all day rather than eating three full meals. A couple of his favorite snacks include Triscuits with shredded cheese melted over top, Claussen sandwich pickles, and cucumber spears dipped in ranch dressing.
Also coffee. Lots and lots of coffee. Coffee is about the only thing he knows how to make well.
Hated Food: He doesn’t really hate anything, but he tends to avoid spicy food because it does horrible things to his stomach.
School: DCU, going for a BA in History.
Hobbies: History – Truthfully Jonah’s one and only passion in life. He developed an interest in history when he had an awesome teacher for the subject in high school and he realized how badass it is. He especially likes the medieval and early modern periods of Europe, particularly the history of England, starting with the Crusades and puttering out somewhere around the late 1700s. He has a special interest in a few key figures of English History, including Richard I the Lionheart, John of Gaunt, and Henry VIII, his six wives, and his children. He has an epic nerd crush on both Richard the Lionheart and Anne Boleyn (he even owns a replica of Anne Boleyn’s famous
“B” necklace, which he sometimes wears and hides beneath his shirts, and he treats the day of her execution, May 19th, as a somber and almost mournful occasion). During the course of his college studies he’s had to fulfill a few requirements in other areas of history, but he’d like to focus mostly on either the Crusades or the Reformation (he’s yet to come to a firm decision one way or the other). When he’s in a talking mood, he could go on and on about history forever (provided he actually felt like his company cared to listen), and he has a marvelous time critiquing random historical programs and documentaries.
Books – Their love for reading is really one of the only things he and his younger sister Haven have to bond over. Despite modern advances in technology and the ease with which one can now delve into a plethora of information, Jonah prefers a good, old-fashioned book to electronic media. He likes the smell of old books, he likes how smart they make him look as they clutter his desk and shelves, and he likes the information they hold and the stories they tell. Sitting around with the Kindle he got for Christmas just isn’t the same, and it tends to collect dust on the far corner of his desk while his books get worn out at the seams. He has a large collection of books on a variety of subjects, fiction and non-fiction alike. Naturally, a good majority of them have something to do with history, but he has a certain fondness for a good fantasy novel as well (except vampires and werewolves just don’t do it for him, even though his favorite book aside from the historical biographies and his Shakespeare collection is
The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova). He finds it difficult to go shopping without picking up at least one book in the process, and he can never quite resist the lure of a bookstore, especially the smaller second-hand stores (you can find some really cool stuff there). He spends a lot of time reading in his room, or in some of the student lounges on campus, and he’s been known to spend a lot of time perusing the shelves in the history section of the library.
Museums – Walking around Destiny’s City's many museums and checking out the latest exhibits happens to be Jonah’s idea of a good time. It’s interesting, it’s relaxing, and if he’s lucky he can meet a couple of like-minded individuals who might not mind talking to him. History museums, art museums, science museums, Jonah loves them all. He absolutely adores living-history museums and is a frequent visitor to Renaissance Fairs (which aren’t museums but they’re still loads of fun, and sometimes he just likes the feeling of being back in a "simpler time"). Frequently, Jonah will spend his weekends museum hopping, especially when he hears word of a new exhibit opening up. He usually ends up going by himself unless his little sister or a friend tags along. He isn’t opposed to other people joining him, it’s just that he tends to go on and on about the things that interest him when he actually has a willing ear, and the constant stream of facts (or the corrections he may or may not make to the tour guides) aren’t always appreciated. He does his best not to be such a nuisance, but he can’t always help it.
Sudoku – One of his more solitary hobbies. Sometimes Jonah just needs to relax and unwind and remove himself from the presence of other people, because talking so much is often a huge effort and he's never really sure what people make of him, so it's just easier to shut himself away and focus on something that stimulates his mind and makes him feel successful when he completes it. One would think crossword puzzles would be more up his alley, but he finds Sudoku far more challenging (and therefore far more rewarding when he manages to complete a set). He has a few Sudoku puzzle books he's been steadily making his way through in his down time. It gives him something to do when he's on his own at home, sitting quietly in the back of his classes, or puttering around by himself trying not to be lame in public.
Piano – Something of a minor hobby. Jonah took up the piano when he was in elementary school at the insistence of his mother and grandfather, who thought it pertinent for the scion of an upper class family to have a "refined" skill that had less to do with reading books and more to do with showing off some visible talent. Jonah didn't mind it, though he knows he's not sensational—certainly nothing to go home and brag about no matter how much his mother and grandfather might try to make "Oh, Jonah plays the piano" seem impressive. Sometimes when he crosses paths with a piano he'll find himself drawn to it for a tune or two. It helps him to de-stress and unwind a bit with its familiarity, if nothing else.
Virtues: Dependable – Need something? Ask Jonah. Jonah likes to be relied upon since it tends to mean there's somebody out there who actually needs him, and he's never been totally sure if anyone
really needs him, so if he can do something for someone and his efforts are at least acknowledged in some fashion, then he's pretty sure that at least means he's marginally useful. He likes being useful. Being useful means he has some purpose in life other than sitting around reading a book. He's good at getting things done in a timely and efficient manner—homework, chores, you name it and he'll try his best to
do his best. He wants to meet whatever expectations he can, and if he can't... well, he'll try. Really,
really try, and if that isn't good enough for someone then he'll be really, really sorry. Really. He's responsible and trustworthy and isn't going to stop halfway, even if that way might be easiest and less stressful for him in the long run.
Cautious – Despite doing what he’s told and trying his hardest to be reliable and please others, Jonah still likes to know what he’s getting himself into ahead of time. He doesn’t want to just jump right into something without a clue. He likes having the facts, he likes listening and observing and getting the information he needs to do a good job. Jonah isn’t usually the type to be reckless or impulsive; he relies on cold, hard facts more than gut instincts. He doesn’t want to get hurt, or get himself in over his head. More than that, he doesn’t want other people to get hurt because of something he’s done. What if he could have done it better? What if rushing meant he missed something important? Jonah isn’t necessarily slow (he does like to be efficient, after all), but he’s going to make sure he’s aware of most (if not all) of the variables before getting involved.
Obedient – Jonah does what he’s told. Clean his room? Done. Get the homework finished before dinner? Got it. Hey, you there, pick up the garbage I just dropped on the ground? Sure, okay, whatever. Some of it has to do with Jonah wanting to do what’s expected of him; the rest of it is just because it’s easier to follow directions and get things done himself than to fight it out and potentially end up having to do it anyway. Disobeying is really just a waste of time, especially when it comes to parents or teachers or other such authority figures. That isn’t to say he’d
never fight it (he isn’t a
complete pushover; he actually might grumble under his breath about it while he’s doing it, but he’s not going to let you know that), but it would have to be pretty extreme for him to refuse. “Extreme” to Jonah would typically mean something illegal, but he’s pretty sure most people wouldn’t ask him to do something like that anyway. He likes to believe humans are generally reasonable beings and would only ask of him what he could feasibly deliver.
Considerate – Most of the nice and/or helpful things Jonah does for people he does because he actually gives a damn. Sure, it’s often what’s expected of him, too, but he’s not without compassion. He has feelings. He isn’t just a numb shell walking around being everyone’s doormat. He can feel joy and he can feel sorrow, and it’s very likely that he’ll feel those things based on the actions, reactions, and feelings of others. He doesn’t like to see people sad, or upset, or angry, or disappointed. Really, he’d rather those sorts of emotions didn’t exist at all, but since they do he’d very much like to help people not feel them. Jonah cares about other people. He’ll sympathize with them in their low moments and feel happy for them in their higher ones. He provides encouragement when it’s needed, assistance when it’s asked for (or even when it’s not if he thinks someone really needs it), and generally does what he can to make life easier for other people. He puts on a friendly face and extends a helping hand.
Flaws: Unadventurous – Jonah likes to play by the rules. You could even say he’s a bit of a stickler for them. One of the only instances in which he would refuse to do what’s asked of him is if it happened to break some sort of rule over the situation. Broken rules mean trouble. Chances are it’s going to come around and bite him in the a**, and karma’s a b***h so he’d really rather not deal with that. Jonah sticks to what he’s comfortable with and follows directions to a T rather than veering off onto his own path. He’s definitely not the person you want to go to for creative ideas or a fresh insight on things, because he’s usually just going to go with what he went with before, and the time before that, and the time before that. He’s an exceptional follower, but put him into any sort of position of leadership and he’ll flounder. He’s not charismatic enough, he’s not ambitious enough, he’s not imaginative enough. He’d really rather just be off on his own or follow someone else around like an extra shadow. Or a puppy. A small, sad, whimpering puppy who’d really like your approval. Putting himself out there and trying to go above and beyond and strive for great things is just scary.
Reserved – As much as he likes other people, and as much as he likes to believe most people are good and reasonable, Jonah still tends to hold himself back, whether it be from making emotional attachments with others or even expressing himself as much as he probably should. He doesn’t talk about himself if he doesn’t have to, and when he has to he doesn’t like going into too much detail, both because he doesn’t really want to get into the nitty-gritty of his life (which he’s pretty sure isn’t really nitty-gritty to begin with), and also because he’s not sure anyone really cares to hear it or deal with his problems. They should be focusing on their own anyway, and to be honest he’d rather hear about theirs and try to help them work it out. Jonah keeps his emotions pent up (especially the negative ones), at least until he cracks and he can’t keep it in any longer. Then he just shuts down and retreats into himself because that minor outburst he just had was totally unintentional, and he’s sorry, very sorry, and he’d take it back if he could.
Naive – Some people might think Jonah’s a bit naïve, and they wouldn’t necessarily be wrong in thinking so, though with Jonah it’s more of a forced naivety than a complete lack of understanding of the world. He’s certainly
aware of how the world works. He understands pride, and greed, and violence, and he knows bad things often happen to good people. Life isn’t always fair, but Jonah still likes to
believe or even
pretend that things aren’t as bad as they seem. There’s got to be some good somewhere, and if life isn’t perfect that doesn’t mean that it can’t be one day. Jonah would rather believe the best in people than get into all of different facets of someone’s character, which makes him pretty easy to manipulate. It isn’t that he doesn’t get that someone’s trying to use or mislead him. It’s just that it’s easier than fighting sometimes. He lets himself be used and controlled. So what if he seems pretty dull in the process? So what if forcing himself to believe what he does makes him seem weak and stupid? At least he’s helpful. At least he’s useful. Someone must have benefited from it, and that makes it okay, right?
Insecure – Most of Jonah’s reservations stem from the fact that he just doesn’t feel all that sure about himself. He’s only just beginning to explore adulthood; he doesn’t even really know who he is yet. He knows who he wants to be, he knows who other people want him to be, but he isn’t quite sure how he’s supposed to get there, or if he even can. Most days he thinks he’s kind of pathetic. If he didn’t try so hard to be as helpful and considerate as he is, he’s pretty sure people wouldn’t pay him any attention at all, and while he might be a bit of an introvert (okay, he’s
totally an introvert; being around people is
so exhausting) he still likes attention every once in a while, so long as that attention is good. Jonah likes praise, he likes earning the approval of others, and if he doesn’t get it then he uses that failure as proof that there’s something wrong with him. Obviously he needs to try harder to do better next time. He only ever feels truly confident when he’s doing or talking about something that he really knows about and likes, otherwise he probably seems rather timid and withdrawn. He just wants to be liked, but he isn’t sure he does a very good job managing it.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
Eyes: Almond shaped and teal in color, like his sister
Haven’s. He wears contact lenses due to being near-sighted, but sometimes he’ll be lazy and wear
a pair of glasses instead.
Hair: Slightly wavy and
ash blonde. Somewhat shaggy and layered with long bangs that frame his face a bit.
Face: Round and youthful. Still quite boyish, with something of a dull, empty (even somewhat sad) gaze. His smiles are never really very big, just a small quirk of the lips, but they're warm when he manages them. More often than not he ends up looking a bit tired and out of it.
Physique: Skinny, with a pale, creamy skin (same skin tone as
Haven). About 5’7”, but he’s sure he’s still growing.
Clothes: Skinny jeans, geeky
history t-shirts, sometimes with button up shirts underneath to add a bit of class, polos, cardigans, and converses. Color-wise, he prefers blues, greens, and purples.
** On he topic of Jonah's family, he is the older sibling of
my chibi senshi, but they will quite obviously never, ever be aware of the other's powered identity. I intend(ed) for Jonah to move out anyway, so he will be removed/distant from his family/sister and his interactions with them will be very limited.
Really, it's just easier to make a character from a family I already have pretty set in my head rather than coming up with a whole new set of family circumstances. v___v;;
